We are deeply saddened by the passing of Billy Lawless, Freeman of Galway City, former senator, and accomplished oarsman, who died on November 7th. A cherished figure in both Galway and the Irish community in Chicago, Billy was honoured with an honorary doctorate from the University of Galway in 2015. A founding member of Tribesmen Rowing Club, he rowed with University of Galway, Coláiste Iognáid S.J. (The Jes), and the Irish national squad, bringing pride to Galway on and off the water. Later, he became a tireless advocate for Irish immigrants in the U.S., serving in Seanad Eireann and championing the undocumented. Our thoughts are with his wife Anne and his family at this time. Billy’s warmth, generosity, and commitment to community will be deeply missed. A Book of Condolences has been opened by Mayor Peter Keane, available online and at Galway City Hall until December 2nd, 2024 and a Memorial Service will be held Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 4:00 pm at Galway Cathedral. The service will be livestreamed on https://lnkd.in/ew2_uAss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
