University College Cork’s Entrepreneurs in Residence appointed as Adjunct Professors in the College of Business and Law. Their expanded roles as Adjunct Professors within Cork University Business School will broaden the entrepreneurial advice, mentorship and experience available to students and staff of UCC who wish to launch or grow their new ventures. Launched earlier this year in line with the University’s strategic goal of developing an innovative culture and entrepreneurial campus, UCC’s Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) programme supports the University in promoting and encouraging entrepreneurial activity among UCC staff, students and graduates. UCC has developed and is nurturing an entrepreneurial ecosystem that aims to encourage, create and support 50 new ventures in the next two years. We were established in 2019, building on the Office of Technology Transfer which was launched in 2007 and previously the Industrial Liaison Office which served UCC for almost 25 years.

University College Cork celebrated graduate founders at the Autumn 2024 IGNITE UCC showcase, featuring pitches from 20 start-ups. IGNITE-supported ventures employ 300+ staff, contributed €66 million in salaries, and raised €27 million in funding. Twenty founders and promoters presented their ideas to invited guests from business and investment communities and were offered an opportunity to connect with prospective customers, partners, mentors and investors. IGNITE equips recent graduates with the skills and tools to develop an idea into a business. It is one of a suite of supports offered by UCC Innovation to encourage and support students, graduates and researchers to harness research and innovation to create new ventures through entrepreneurial activity. Two women-led start-ups at University College Cork secure over €1 million in Enterprise Ireland funding. Dr Siobhain O'Mahony O’ Mahony, founder of FemmeMeno and Dr Julie O'Sullivan, founder of SkinCoat, have received funding totalling €1,046,747 from Enterprise Ireland’s Commercialisation Fund Programme. FemmeMeno, is designed to empower women by providing targeted support during peri/menopause; helping to balance hormones, enhance vitality and improve overall health and well-being. Menopause affects every person born female and by the year 2025, the number of post-menopausal women worldwide is estimated to reach 1.1 billion. SkinCoat is an innovative topical probiotic cream aimed at alleviating eczema symptoms. Eczema is a prevalent condition, affecting 1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults in Ireland. Health Innovation Hub Ireland with the Health Service Executive and the Irish College of GPs is running a GreenTech in Healthcare call for innovative products and services that promote environmental sustainability in both primary and secondary healthcare. The Irish healthcare sector is responsible for an estimated 5 per cent of the country's Global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Additionally, the sector uses a high volume of single use products, adding to resource use and waste. The call is opened to all companies, organisations, research bodies regardless of size or origin.
