The Cost of Caring – Understanding Psychological Distress in Support Staff Who Work with Adults with an Intellectual Disability in Ireland. This new study published in the Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies sheds light on the challenges faced by staff supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in Ireland’s community-based residential settings. While the move to house more people with intellectual disability in the community rather than large institutions has brought significant progress, it has also introduced new stressors for those supporting people to live in the community, including: ➡️ Greater occupational isolation with fewer resources compared to institutional care. ➡️ Increased responsibilities of those working in the community residential homes compared to larger institutional settings. ➡️ High levels of work-related stress, with some staff experiencing distress levels comparable to mental health patients. Staff well-being directly impacts the quality of care and life outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities. Burnout and distress can lead to absenteeism, compromised care, and even higher risks of abuse. It’s time to prioritise the well-being of these dedicated workers by enhancing the support for all staff, including those without formal social care qualifications. The study states that there is "a growing evidence base for the importance of supervision, training and support in reducing risk for distress even in high stress workplaces" We must ensure the people who care for others are cared for themselves. ❤️ This is the purpose of Trust Social Care Consultancy, we recognise the significance of support for those caring for others to ensure their own psychological wellbeing and that of those they care for. #SocialCare #IntellectualDisabilities #SupportStaffWellbeing #Deinstitutionalization #HumanRights #Ireland

Today is National Women's Enterprise Day (17th October) and I was up early to celebrate this wonderful day with hundreds of other Enterprising Women (and a few men!) at the Local Enterprise Office Fingal NEWD event at Crowne Plaza Dublin Blanchardstown. It was a wonderful morning hosted by Mary Kennedy, as she put it "A day for celebration, learning and networking". Among others we heard from Emer Higgins Minister for State for Business, Employment and Retail, AnnMarie Farrelly Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Oonagh O'Hagan founder and MD of Meagher's Pharmacy Group and so many more amazing speakers and panel. It was also lovely to meet new people and reconnect with friends in business. I'll never forget the look on my 1st year social care students' faces when our presenter from Safe Care Technologies threw an AAC device (similar to an ipad) across the room 😆 It was to demonstrate how robust the devices are for children with additional needs. Check out this webinar if you work with or are interested in working with children with autism and or additional needs: https://lnkd.in/ejacZkSJ
