Building Sustainable Consent Education in Further Education & Training 🙌 This Tuesday the 17th of December we were delighted to collaborate with Further Education and Training to hold our first ThisIsFET event where we welcomed colleagues from around the country to focus on building sustainable consent education in the Further Education & Training sector. The opening address was from Blake Hodkinson, FET Director, City of Dublin ETB, who began with highlighting the scope and diversity of FET, that we all have a responsibility to normalise consent education & positively affect every community nationally. Our FET lead, Sinead Mc Grath, brought us through the journey so far, while acknowledging the huge achievements such as nearly 3,000 FET staff having accessed some type of Active* Consent training. This session guided the attendees to what worked on the ground, aiming to bridge the gap from staff training to rollout to learners while highlighting calls to action including; 🔵 The designation of an ETB-specific consent education function, with responsibility given to a coordinator or team. 🔵 Agreement of implementation plans by FE college and centre management, including the commitment to mainstreaming consent education. 🔵 Strategic national framework: Key stakeholders to agree to a call to action statement including development of a consent framework & inclusion in the next FET strategy. 🔵 Equality across Higher and Further Education regarding consent education. Marie-Louise O'Reilly from City of Dublin ETB Psychological Service reminded us of the importance of learner wellbeing, which should be at the heart of everything we do, which includes preventative consent education. Aideen Lyster, Assistant Principal & Guidance Counsellor, Inchicore College of Further Education brought us back to the "Reality on the Ground" working as a guidance counsellor, being aware of the possible complexities of staff & learners, while bringing us through her Active* Consent journey. Clarissa J. DiSantis, our Education & Training Lead next brought everyone through an interactive session: "The Comprehensive Institution-wide Approach" where attendees were fully engaged. Our session ended with a panel discussion which highlighted the different models of rollout that were successful within certain ETBs ending on the advice from colleagues from Cork ETB to "be brave" while Donnacha Clancy, Principal of Inchicore College of Further Education acknowledged how serious the issue of SVH was and that we are all responsible for proactive consent education. This event brought together voices who were in agreement that although there have been many wins normalising consent education within the sector, we need to bridge the gap between Higher and Further Education Consent Education. Huge thanks to everyone who travelled and Inchicore College of Further Education for hosting this wonderful event!
