Idiotopedia Lite: Persistence is for Losers It seems like only yesterday that I finished writing a book about VC and PE in Southeast Asia and started my small VC firm that focuses on impact and sustainability investments. Yes, time sure goes by quickly! Even though those chapters were fun, my goals have changed, and I'm now heavily involved in new life direction. Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that the opinions below come from my own experiences. Venture capital and private equity are always changing, and this statement is not meant to be financial or investing advice. Well, another day, another research paper that tries to figure out how VC returns work. This time, there are two themes in one paper: one is about how long VC returns last, and the other is about whether individual VCs or the companies themselves make the deals. Let's me sum a bit. The first theme says that successful VCists help other successful VCists do well. Good. It's simply a popularity contest with a side of making things happen that you already said would happen. That much you already knew if you've been to one of those pricey VC conferences. Things get interesting in the second theme. It seems to say that the key is the individual VCs, not the companies. This is where I raise an eyebrow. As if to say that a star chef, not the kitchen or the name, makes a restaurant. There may be some truth to this thought, but let't make it too big. I have worked in Southeast Asia's capital market for some time and have seen the hype cycle come and go. There are star VCs, but are they really that much better than the others? Or are they just lucky to be in the right place at the right time? What about the businesses? Because they are so focused on building brands for each partner, traditional VCs miss out on a great chance. It's like building a personality cult instead of a strong business. I noticed Y-Combinator and Indie Bio are successful firms. They're showing that a strong corporate brand and meticulous deal-finding and portfolio management can outperform the celebrity VC approach. Yes, network effects can be tremendous in a portfolio management. We must create an environment where startups can collaborate, share ideas, and grow faster. To do this, people must shift their focus from individual pride to group success. My question for this: In a world where individual heroes are adored, can we really create long-lasting VC firms that regularly do better than the market? Or will it be a game of musical chairs where a new star VC takes the lead every couple of years? Well, it seems like small VCs are popping up faster than bugs do after it rains. Take a look at the canopy; it looks like a tropical jungle in the capital, but don't be fooled. There is a famine coming—El Niño is drying up those valuable funding drops—beneath the leaves. There may be a lot of money coming your way right now, but don't get too wet—the dry season is coming! Again, enjoy the paper!

KL20 has indeed been a game-changer for Malaysia's startup ecosystem. What stood out about the KL20 Summit was the emphasis on implementation. Bringing together the right stakeholders and focusing on actionable strategies is crucial for translating vision into tangible outcomes. Dear PMX, I give you 2 stars out of 3 for the budget 2025. Overall, it 'feels' OK, because: 1. Autistic children are well taken care off, without rebranding Permata. More allocations for OKU, higher sugar tax, healthcare budgets increased. Education, like always, got the biggest, and increased. 2. Research universities (RU) got budget doing AI for cancer, cybersecurity, linguistics and integrated circuits. It's time to do what matters. The word AI is less mentioned this time than last year's. 'Datacenter' also mentioned once, two times. 3. Civil servants are taken care of, hopefully more productive, less mee hoon and karipap during meetings. The not OK part is when: 1. Those RU doing AI, is not related with whatever the hype semiconductor/AI from industries. Will RU do the AI will be using local IC-designed by Malaysians/local companies? Will local IC design their products for these RU? There's no continuity here as we don't put things practically from what we've learned, no end-to-end. 2. Indian's community got small budgets compared to Bumiputera - which means, the Indian's community will be very efficient, self-reliant more than Bumiputeras. Like statistic shows repetitively - listed Bumi companies is ciput/minuscle despite heavy funded/grants. You spoilt the Bumis who got the grant, you made the existing self-reliance Bumis even harder to be known as self-reliant entities. 3. Education's syllabus is questionable. Despite RM500 mil for those who wants to enroll in STEM, it ain't enough. As long as MOE and MOHE is not under one roof unlike any other countries in the world, there's another discontinuity, huge one. 4. Grants given to startups like crazy, but no real-world jobs given (if any at all), as expected. When they went outside poached by foreign VCs, they lupa diri/forgot their origin. All by Malaysian tax payers money. We keep on exporting Malaysians at the expense of tax payers money for the benefit of foreigners. With the 2025' budgets getting bigger and the debts getting higher, that is the remaining one star that might be the biggest worrisome of all, dear PMX. #careerhighlight Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining a fascinating discussion with Ruth Porat (President & Chief Investment Officer, Alphabet and Google), Sapna Chadha (VP Southeast Asia, Google) and an amazing group of Indonesian VCs and startups. We explored the challenges and opportunities of tech in Indonesia, particularly in rural communities. What we heard from the group: ▶ Bridging the digital divide: Much progress has been made but affordability of quality mobile phones and digital skills training continue to be crucial for rural communities to participate in the digital economy. ▶ GenAI's potential: Generative AI can revolutionize communication and app usage, making technology more accessible. ▶ Empowering "agripreneurs": Digitization can revitalize the agricultural sector and attract young talent by creating economic opportunities. ▶ Building from the ground up: The temptation to copy paste US successes is high, but the experience shows that successful tech solutions in Indonesia must be tailored to the local context, in particular when addressing rural communities. ▶ Sustainability as a priority: Indonesia has been “blessed” with abundant fossil fuel (coal) resources, nonetheless how can we support the development of clean energies. It was inspiring to see the commitment of these leaders to leverage technology for positive impact in Indonesia. The conversation highlighted the importance of collaboration within the tech ecosystem to address the challenges and unlock the immense potential of this dynamic market. 📚 Received this book during TBS Asia. Definitely a good read and includes many golden nuggets on soft skills to succeed - and also, as Munger said "what to avoid to become successful". However, my favorite chapter (and something that could resonate with me the most) was still Felicia . section. 👇Here's a short extract (slightly edited to shorten)👇 "To highlight why building a valuable and sellable business is so important, let's look at a typical journey that many of these entrepreneurs went through. We shall call this entrepreneur in our story Bob. Bob started out his business because he was passionate about IT, and he was very good at it. .....After the initial few years though, the growth seemed to have slowed down to a halt. He tried hiring staff to help serve more clients, however, the clients seemed to always go back to him and preferred to deal with him directly. Before he knew it, a decade had passed, and he was feeling tired and burnt out. At this point, Bob was wondering what his options were. He did not have anyone who was capable enough to run the business for him. When he started to think about selling his business, he found out that he could not get a good valuation for it as most of his clients only buy the company's services because of him. Bob's story has happened to many entrepreneurs in real life. Global Talent Meets Local Potential: Indonesia's Digital Leap Forward With its digital economy growing to $82 billion in 2023 and projected to reach up to $360 billion by 2030, Indonesia is a tech juggernaut in the making. Yet, beyond the numbers lies an even greater opportunity: welcoming international talent to work alongside local experts, solving challenges unique to Indonesia’s vast and diverse markets​. What’s the spark? The vibrant local culture, untapped potential in sectors like fintech and e-commerce, and a massive young, tech-savvy population. However, there’s work to be done.
