As I often say, hydrogen will be a potential renewable energy source in Indonesia. I think Repower is the next big thing in the energy transition sphere. Basically the only viable and economical pathway to transform Coal Power Plant into clean energy while maintaining cost, some studies, even reduce cost and increase reliability. The Repower programs initiated by Quantified Carbon. Indonesia is among the 5 countries participating infact the first summit was held in ITB, Bandung. INPEX Corporation (INPEX), through its subsidiary #INPEX_GEOTHERMAL LTD (IGE), has signed a memorandum of understanding on a joint geothermal study with PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP), a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero) Perusahaan Listrik Negara Negara. The MoU was signed between the two parties during the 8th Indonesia-Japan Energy Forum (IJEF) held in Bali, Indonesia on 5 December 2024. “The discussion at this forum highlighted the commitment of both countries to achieve Net Zero Emission outlined in national policies, including roadmap programs, and their activities,” said Menteri Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) Secretary General Dadan Kusdiana at the event. Through the MoU, INPEX aims to form a cooperative effort with PLN IP on geothermal development and exploration in Indonesia. IGE established its office in Indonesia in October 2022 and has since promoted geothermal business opportunities. The MOU is a part of these ongoing efforts. IGE currently owns stakes in three operating geothermal power plants in Indonesia – Muara Laboh, Rantau Dedap, and Sarulla - Aceh NangroDarussalam. In early 2023, IGE acquired stake in the Rajabasa geothermal field, an exploration site in Lampung. The company is also involved in several geothermal exploration efforts in Japan. INPEX seeks to enhance and emphasize renewable energy initiatives, which are one of the 5 net zero businesses outlined in the company’s “INPEX Vision @2022” announced on February 9, 2022. As part of the vision, INPEX will accelerate its initiatives aimed at its geothermal power generation business, which can utilize the technologies cultivated by the company through oil and natural gas development. Moreover, the company will proactively engage in energy structure reforms towards the realization of a net zero carbon society while fulfilling its responsibilities for the stable development and supply of energy. “We can see that most #ASEAN countries have a plan to reach net zero emission (in the next 30 to 40 years) … they have a clear target to reach carbon neutrality,” said Fabby Tumiwa, executive director of the Jakarta-based Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR). Tumiwa said like most growing APEC economies, ASEAN members want to boost their economies but with “less intensive carbon emissions”. He said this is why ASEAN countries plan to develop more renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and gradually phase out coal plants.   However, the progress of renewable energy production across Southeast Asia is uneven. #APEC2024

🚨 BP Commits $7 Billion to Indonesia’s First CCUS Project 🌍 bp is taking a monumental step in advancing Indonesia’s energy sector with a $7 billion investment in the Tangguh Ubadari CCUS Compression (UCC) project, the country’s first large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) initiative. “We are unlocking a fantastic gas resource while pioneering CCUS technology to maximize gas recovery,” said Murray Auchincloss, BP’s CEO. TEMPO reports on future Thorcon nuclear power in Indonesia. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The transition to nuclear energy must be accelerated to meet the ever-increasing demand for electricity. It is more environmentally friendly. ... Nothing can meet Indonesia’s demand for electricity except nuclear power plants. So it is inevitable that the proposal to transition from power plants burning fossil fuels such as coal to nuclear power plants will become a reality. From 2035 to 2040, for example, electricity demand is predicted to soar and could reach 1,600 terawatt-hours. If we only rely on fossil fuels and renewable energy power plants, with a total capacity of just 1,390 tWh, it is clear that this demand will not be met. ... Therefore, the government should not be half-hearted in implementing the transition to nuclear energy embodied in the 2020-2034 National Medium-Term Development Plan. The National Energy Council is right to target 2032 for the start of operations of a 500-megawatt nuclear power plant on Gelasa Island, Bangka Belitung. To be consistent in achieving this target, the construction of this power plant, which will take eight to 10 years, should begin immediately. ... Of course, there are many concerns about the safety and security of nuclear plants. Memories of the nuclear accidents at Chernobyl, in Ukraine in 1986 and Fukushima, in Japan in 2011 still haunt nations planning to operate such installations. And Indonesia, which is prone to earthquakes, is deemed as not an ideal place for nuclear power plants. ... And the transition to nuclear is considered as hasty because renewable energy sources such as wind, water, and solar power have not been exploited to their maximum capacity. ... Although they should be considered, these concerns should not be blown out of proportion. After all, Indonesia has experience in managing nuclear reactors. In the Sukarno era, the government built Triga Mark II in Bandung, West Java, which was inaugurated in 1961. Then, during the Suharto presidency, two reactors were built. The first was the Kartini reactor in Sleman, Yogyakarta, inaugurated in 1979, followed by the G.A. Siwabessy Multipurpose Reactor in Serpong, South Tangerang, Banten in 1987. These three reactors were designed to produce not electricity, but radioisotopes used for medical and agricultural purposes. But they did at least prove that our experts are able to operate nuclear technology, including handling waste. ... And the nuclear power plant targeted to begin operating in 2032 will be a fourth-generation reactor with the latest safety technologies. The longer the line, the greater the RLC values, which will cause losses and line charging. 2. Inductive loads require significant reactive power, which needs to be compensated by reducing the voltage on the receiving end, causing the power factor to become lagging. 3. Capacitive loads can increase the voltage on the receiving end compared to the sending end because they tend to store and release energy, which contributes to the voltage increase during the charging process. 4. Compensators are needed to control the voltage in the line by regulating reactive power, which will then affect the voltage value. A new IEEFA commentary found that despite PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara's (#PLN) net profit increase of IDR22 trillion (tn) in 2023, it would have recorded a significant loss of IDR120tn without government subsidies and compensations. IEEFA's Mutya Yustika presented the factors affecting the financial situation of PLN, Indonesia’s national electricity utility: ⏺ PLN's financial performance heavily depends on the Government of Indonesia’s subsidies and compensations, which have risen by 16.4% from IDR123tn in 2022 to IDR143tn in 2023. ⏺ In 2023, purchased #electricity from coal and #gas contributed to a 14% increase in operational expenses and accounted for 63% of total operating costs. ⏺ PLN’s exposure to US$-denominated #coal prices led to struggles with price fluctuations due to exchange rate changes. While purchases are denominated in US$, PLN’s tariff collections are in Indonesian rupiahs. ⏺ Shipping and plant maintenance costs also contributed to the fiscal situation. As coal-fired power plants age, they lose efficiency and require more coal to produce each kilowatt hour of electricity. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry expects Indonesia to miss by a wide margin its year-end target for renewable power generating capacity. Experts blame uncompetitive prices and policies that support coal power. Eniya Listiani Dewi, the energy ministry’s renewables director general, said PLN, according to its electricity procurement plan (RUPTL), would need to build renewable power plants with a total capacity of 8.2 gigawatts (GW) by 2025 to meet the target. Projects in the pipeline include solar, hydroelectric, micro-hydro and wind power plants with a total capacity of 2.83 GW, 1.7 GW, 787 megawatts and 527 MW, respectively. 🌍🔋 Advancing Energy Transition: Indonesia and China's Strategic Cooperation The impactful energy transition cooperation between Indonesia and China marks a crucial step towards a sustainable future, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and enhancing renewable energy use across both nations. This partnership is further strengthened by the high-level dialogue between Indonesian and Chinese officials, aimed at deepening cooperation on energy transition that took place in September 2023. Three weeks after this high-level dialogue, President of Indonesia attended the 3rd Belt and Road Forum and paid a state visit to China in October 2023. A joint statement was signed between The People's Republic of China and The Republic of Indonesia, committing to accelerating energy transitions and carrying on more high-quality projects for clean energy development. During the Forum, Indonesia’s state electricity company PT PLN established clean energy cooperation with nine Chinese companies, with a total valuation of US$54 billion. Two MOUs with State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) and Trina Solar China were also signed to construct environmentally friendly super grid transmission lines and smart grids as Indonesia's clean energy electricity backbone. This collaboration underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling climate change and advancing clean energy initiatives. Indonesia’s Investment Authority (#INA) is planning US$ 1 billion this year in promoting EVs, geothermal energy and to retire coal thermal power plants early. In addition, there are potential collaboration discussions in the region around Nickel mining, battery manufacturing to support EV supply chain development. The IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics 2024 report reveals that by the end of 2023, Indonesia’s total renewable energy capacity stands at just 13,332 MW, with growth of less than 5,000 MW since 2014. This figure starkly contrasts with Vietnam, which has led ASEAN in renewable energy growth with a remarkable increase to 30,000 MW over nearly a decade. Vietnam's success is driven by highly supportive policies, including new regulations that facilitate direct power purchase agreements between private developers and consumers. In contrast, under President Joko Widodo’s leadership (2014–2024), Indonesia has yet to pass key regulations to advance its energy transition. A policy review by Yayasan Indonesia CERAH, titled "Probing President Jokowi’s Energy Policies: Progress or Regress?", reveals that his policies have stalled RE development, with more coal plants and fossil fuel expansion. The "Job Creation" Law is often blamed, but the study suggests this could be part of a deeper, systemic issue.
