Mobile market outlook with 4G deployment comparison in ASEAN countries I believe the price of telecommunication equipment is almost the same worldwide because they use the same suppliers. The difference may be from the resource/labor cost in each country. We can see from the graph below that with the same 4G development cost but generating very different revenues which impacts the health of the telecommunication industry in each country. The telecommunication industry in Indonesia needs to increase ARPU in order to compete with other countries in ASEAN and for the sustainability of telecommunications in Indonesia itself.

Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core solution is our answer on how to address the introduction of the new 5G Core network architecture while enabling an efficient co-existence with deployed 4G Core networks, as well as to leverage the benefits from new technologies such as cloud native to legacy networks.  I am very pleased to see XL Axiata will deploy Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core, ensuring flexibility as it expands 4G and 5G networks nationwide. This is Ericsson’s first deployment of dual-mode 5G core in Indonesia. The cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core by Ericsson seamlessly integrates the new 5G Core network architecture with the existing 4G Core network, ensuring efficient co-existence and a smooth transition for XL Axiata. Terrific interview by Sadayuki Abeta on a 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘 international TV program "SEA Today 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦", together with Eugina Jordan, Telecom Infra Project and Lia Yuldinawati, Telkom University. The diverse interviewee from 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮, 𝗨𝗦 and 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 brought very insightful views on collaborative 5G Open RAN showcase in Nusantara, the new capital of Indonesia. The key message was that Open RAN is a key technology for Indonesia’s bright future. Here are 2 reasons. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝟭: Open RAN will contribute to strengthening connectivity in the unique landscape of Indonesia, the technology which realizes basic needs to bring people together and connected. The land of Indonesia consists of more than 17,500 islands and contains highly urbanized cities to dispersed rural villages. Telco Winter Coming? Let's Look at the Bigger Picture The latest Analysys Mason report paints a cautious picture of the telco industry's CAPEX trends. Here are some key data points: 1. Global CAPEX Decline: CAPEX among the 50 largest Telcos fell by 3.5% in 2023, after a 7.8% increase in 2022. This trend is expected to continue in 2024. 2. North America: The steepest decline at 18.1% for the top mobile network operators 3. China: Overall flat CAPEX, with a 7% decline in 5G and fixed broadband investments. Investments have shifted towards "computility" and capabilities, now making up 35% of operator CAPEX. 4. Europe: CAPEX fell by 5.5%, with significant FTTP investments peaking or plateauing in countries like France, Spain, and the UK. 5. Emerging Markets: An 8% rise in CAPEX driven by India, marking a steady growth for three consecutive years. My Two Cents While the report indicates a pessimistic long-term CAPEX trend, I believe we need a broader perspective. The industry is experiencing a hangover from pandemic-induced overinvestment. During the pandemic, telcos ramped up spending to meet the surge in demand for connectivity driven by remote work, online education, and increased digital consumption. However, investment in our industry will not come to a halt. The deployment and enhancement of 5G and 4G networks are far from complete. To achieve the necessary coverage and density, telcos will need to continue investing heavily in: - 5G Midband and Massive MIMO: These technologies are crucial for enhancing network capacity and coverage. - Network Densification and Small Cells: Essential for improving service quality in high-demand areas. - Modernization of Bands (including Low Bands): To ensure more efficient use of spectrum and better overall performance. The number of 5G users has not yet peaked; we are still in the early stages of the adoption curve. (currently at 15%). As more users transition to 5G, data traffic will inevitably increase also the individidual consumption. Just to give you an idea in the next 6 years we will onboard more than 5 billion 5G consumers and by 2030 they will be using 56GB/month of data. Analysts often make the mistake of interpreting percentage growth rates incorrectly. While a percentage increase might appear to slow down when compared year-over-year, the absolute volume of data traffic and users continues to surge. According to industry projections, global mobile + Fixed data traffic is expected to exceed 1100 exabytes per month by 2030, up from around 500 exabytes per month today. This is a massive amount of data that current 4G networks simply cannot handle alone. Neither 5G networks have reached the coverage, density and maturity to handle these numbers. In my view, the current slowdown in CAPEX is a recalibration, not a long-term downturn. Our industry's cyclical nature means we will continue to see phases of intense investment and consolidation.

A New Half Petabit Singapore/Indonesian Cable: INSICA Singtel and TELIN are partnering on a new cable connecting Singapore to Indonesia via landings at Tuas and Bantam. It is a 24 fibre pair cable designed to provide up to 20 terabits per fibre pair or 480 Tbps aggregate throughput. RFS target is 4Q2026. My guess is that the cable will be unrepeatered given the short distance of only 100 kilometers. But its fibre count is low for an unrepeatered system. The cable's name is INSICA (Indonesian Singapore Cable System). Singapore is clearly today the most important telecom hub in the Pacific for two reasons. It is much closer to Europe than Tokyo, its main competitor, and its government makes it easy to build and operate subsea cables that land on its shores. But Singapore imports almost all its energy in the form of natural gas that Malaysia and Indonesia supply. Energy prices are high and scaling supply is a challenge. So it is not a great place for large, hypercaler data centers even though they are the natural complement to fibre optic transport. Space is another obvious constraint since Singapore is a city state. In contrast, Indonesia has plenty of space and huge coal reserves to power hyperscaler or AI data centers. Furthermore, coal is dispatchable energy available upon demand unlike randomly fluctuations renewables. Like many countries Indonesia has in the recent past practiced a fair amount of economic protectionism limiting the ability of foreign carriers to establish their own operations in-country. Usually in the form of joint venture requirements or limits on foreign ownership. Hence this offers Singtel a beachhead in the four most populated country on the planet. The project offers both Singtel and TELIN advantages. Singtel gets access to the Indonesian data center market because the deal includes a jointly managed data center in Bantam. Furthermore, large AI data centers are energy intensive and Indonesia is much better suited for them than Singapore. This enables Singtel to get a piece of the more rapidly growing Indonesian data center market fueled by the relative abundance of energy and space. In turn, TELIN's improved connectivity to Asia's premier telecom and Internet hub, Singapore, enables TELIN to attract more interest in its data centers. Any potential customer for Indonesian data centers is likely to already have a Singapore presence and hence need transport to Indonesia from it. Singtel obviously wants to keep Singapore as the key telecom hub and hence connectivity to Indonesia which is better suited for space and energy intensive data centers is a good thing. There is an interesting dynamic here as TELIN aspires to make Indonesia a telecommunications hub rivaling Singapore and Singtel probably sees a need to expand its operations beyond its incumbent service territory. #subseacables #internetinfrastructure #telecom #hub #singapore #indonesia
