UNESCO and Tanoto Foundation’s” Youth as Researchers - Tanoto Student Research Awards” (YAR-TSRA) is back and stronger than ever!   This year, 96 talented Indonesian students came together to tackle pressing societal issues through research. Their groundbreaking work in areas like mental health, climate action, digital technology, and inclusive education is a testament to the power of youth.   As Maki Katsuno-Hayashikawa, Director and Representative of the UNESCO Regional Office in Jakarta, stated, the partnership with Tanoto Foundation has been invaluable, providing essential resources and mentorship opportunities. The China Philanthropy Research Institute (CPRI) at Beijing Normal University and Tanoto Foundation launched the Blue Book, titled “China 0-3 Years Early Childhood Development Report (2024)” – a key resource designed to advance early childhood development in China. The Blue Book outlines critical strategies for the holistic development of children aged 0-3, with a focus on good health, adequate nutrition, security and safety, opportunities for early learning, and responsive caregiving. As a recipient of the Tanoto Foundation Medical Research Fund (MRF), Associate Professor Rinkoo Dalan and her team at Tan Tock Seng Hospital are investigating the potential of colchicine, a medication known for its anti-inflammatory properties, to reduce heart disease risks in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Precision medicine is a key component of Associate Professor Dalan’s research, focusing on tailoring treatment to the specific biological characteristics of each patient. At Tanoto Foundation, we are committed to a data-driven approach that ensures our initiatives have a lasting, positive impact on communities. This focus on measurement and impact evaluation is key to aligning our efforts with the real needs of those we serve, helping us create sustainable systems change.   This is demonstrated by recent reports on our SIGAP and PINTAR programs in Indonesia, providing evidence of the critical role of early childhood development and quality education in shaping a child's future. Through robust monitoring and evaluation, we've seen impressive results: the PINTAR program has led to a 10% increase in literacy and an 11.6% increase in numeracy among students in participating schools, while the Rumah Anak SIGAP program has positively influenced children's cognitive, language, motor, and socio-emotional development.   These reports were presented by our MLE Lead, Much. We’re thrilled to welcome the first Tanoto Foundation Fellowship Program cohort, as they embark on their learning journey into the education ecosystem in Indonesia across Java, Kalimantan, and Sumatra.   Through field visits and engagement with key stakeholders, the fellows will gain hands-on insights into the educational landscape. They’ll identify gaps in current conditions and develop initiative plans focused on sustainable development.   Michael S., Head of Leadership Development and Scholarship, alongside Aryani Savitri, Head of Strategic Planning and Partnership, and Murni Hoeng, Head of Measurement, Learning, and Evaluation, proudly inducted this cohort, marking the start of their transformative journey. What does the world look like from a child's perspective? Imagine being 95 cm tall and experiencing the world through the eyes of a three-year-old. This is the perspective of participants in the Urban95 Academy, an executive education program from LSE Cities and the Van Leer Foundation.   The City of Balikpapan was selected as one of ten cities worldwide to participate in the Urban95 Academy residency program in London at LSE this week. As part of the 7th cohort, they participated in workshops on behavioral science, departmental collaboration, effective communication, and change making through narrative.   Representing Balikpapan were three senior government officers and Roselina Ping Juan, our Regional Lead for Kalimantan. Upon returning to Indonesia, the team will be rolling out their programs focused on stunting reduction and housing improvements.   Tanoto Foundation has been collaborating with the City of Balikpapan for several years to improve the quality of basic education.
