Our #COP29 side event took place today, with our members around the 🌏 discussing their countries’ climate commitments 📉: the nationally determined contributions (#NDCs) that countries are required to make as #ParisAgreement signatories 🖋️. The next round of NDCs are due next year – and this moment presents a good opportunity to discuss how they are developed. 🔹 Lidia Wojtal, INETTT Project Lead, opened the discussion, noting how NDCs can be made more ambitious and implementable if independent thinks tanks are involved from the very start, working together with governments to co-produce them. 🔹 Dr. Tracy Ledger from our South African member Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) expressed a message of hope that the next NDCs focus more on #justtransitions, prioritising the goal of creating equitable and sustainable economies and societies. 🔹 Clauber Leite, ph.D. from our Brazilian member E+ Energy Transition Institute discussed how transparent and reliable data is integral to developing better NDCs, emphasising the need to engage with other civil society organisations. 🔹 According to Dr. Khalid Waleed from our member Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Pakistan has begun the process of developing its next NDC, yet challenges remain, including gaps in the consultative process. He also called for Pakistan’s NDC to be combined with its Climate Prosperity Plan, to link climate action with #greengrowth. 🔹 Luisa Sierra Brozon from Instituto de Desarollo Energía y Ambiente (IDEA, Mexico) emphasised the need for a strong monitoring and verification system for NDC implementation, to better track progress and assess areas where they can be advanced further. 🔹 Yuri Okubo from Renewable Energy Institute (REI, Japan) called for broader civil society inclusion in the development of the NDCs and for countries to adopt more transparent consultation models, including formalising committee member selections. 🔹 Marlistya Citraningrum from Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) (IESR, Indonesia) said many countries’ NDCs and policies, including Indonesia’s, are not in line with a 1.5 °C pathway. She underscored the urgent need to ensure the next round of climate targets reflects the necessary changes. By prioritising the early involvement of independent think tanks and co-development in NDC processes, governments can receive sound, evidence-based information on the potential impacts of their NDCs – as well as solutions for ensuring energy transitions are both equitable and effective. As an established network of such independent think tanks, INETTT continues to provide a vital platform for open dialogue and shared strategies for energy transitions around the world. #energytransitions #justtransition #climateaction

After months of hard work, we’re pleased to launch the Indonesia Energy Outlook 2025! This report provides an in-depth look at Indonesia's solar energy market and its essential role in the nation’s energy transition. Access the full report here: https://lnkd.in/g65KJhMm Key Insights🔑: 🥇 Solar power leads the energy transition, accounting for 73% (346 GW) of new renewable capacity in 2023. While Southeast Asia has added 2.78 GW since 2021, Indonesia’s solar capacity is modest, reaching only 717 MW as of June 2024. 📈 Since 2022, Indonesia has added 510 MW of solar capacity, mostly from utility-scale projects (208 MW) and rooftop solar (196 MW). Captive installations have also grown rapidly, adding over 100 MW, doubling sector investment to USD 134.6 million by 2023. ⚖ New regulations (MEMR 2/2024) have reshaped the market, shifting focus to industrial and commercial consumers. Floating solar projects are accelerating than ever, and reforms to local content requirements (new MoI and MEMR regulations) are now in effect as of August 2024. To sustain this growth 🌱, a strong support system is needed, including partnerships between PLN and private stakeholders, investment in grid flexibility and energy storage, and increasing the industrial competitiveness of domestic solar module manufacturers. A special thanks to the co-authors and contributors Abraham Octama Halim, Muhammad Dhifan Nabighdazweda, Putra Maswan, Pintoko Aji, and Akbar Bagaskara and the entire IESR team for their invaluable contributions to this report.
