Unlocking Indonesia's Seaweed Potential with BRIN Research and innovation are key to our sustainability journey. From innovative practices to mainstreaming biodiversity in economic activities, we are committed to building a regenerative farming system that prioritizes environmental well-being. Our partnership with Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional RI (BRIN RI) (Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia) is pivotal in advancing this vision. As Indonesia's lead research institution, BRIN plays a crucial role in supporting the development of value-added seaweed products. Following our MoU with Institut Teknologi Bandung (Bandung Institute of Technology), we are focusing on enhancing seaweed production and developing our own products. We see "hilirasasi" (local value creation) as a transformative concept—moving beyond traditional approaches to uplift the entire seaweed industry. This includes empowering smallholder farmers and upstream stakeholders, ensuring no one is left behind in the value chain. Achieving a balanced supply chain starts with asking the right questions and fostering collaboration. Hi everyone! 👋 It's been a while since we last connected! Over the past three weeks, we've been busy to #reconnecting with our network to validate our business model and prepare for the official launch. We have engaged in extensive discussions with farmers, their families, women workers, traders, exporters, researchers, and government officials. Our mission is to #contribute to solving the challenges in the #seaweed industry and elevate it to the next level. Achieving this requires #inclusivity and #collaboration, as it is not a task we can accomplish alone. During our domestic trip, we primarily #listened to the needs and concerns of various actors within the #supplychain. Some of these issues have persisted for over a decade, while others are relatively new. Addressing these problems necessitates #solutions and #collaborativeefforts. At BANYU, we are starting with the most fundamental issue—not money, but the #stability of the primary #input for #seaweed #cultivation. Unlike other forms of #aquaculture, seaweed relies on a single crucial input, which must be consistently available to ensure a steady supply for the industry. Securing this input is our top priority before we can move on to other agendas or solutions. This input will serve as a #catalyst for advancing the seaweed industry, enabling us to implement standard operating procedures, #InternetofThings (IoT) technologies, and develop our own product formulations. As a startup, we are learning and evolving each day, striving to connect the dots. Just as a building requires a solid foundation, our first step is securing the #seedling supply, which is essential for the industry’s growth. The future of Indonesia and Timor Leste seaweed? After a month (our founder Dodon Yamin) of traveling across various locations in Indonesia and Timor Leste and engaging with smallholder farmers involved in aquaculture, especially seaweed cultivation, we identified several key points: 1. Many farmers remain optimistic about the increasing price of seaweed, estimating it to be between USD 1.4 to 1.6 (raw dried seaweed) at the farmer level (farmer hope). 2. The supply chain requires simplification as brands or buyers are still fragmented and not adequately connected with producers. 3. The price of rice significantly influences decisions related to seaweed cultivation. 4. Most farmers acknowledge the need for improvements in both quality and quantity (They need partner to do so!). The future of Indonesia's seaweed industry looks promising, with a potential of around 10 million hectares, as indicated in the Master Plan of Indonesia Seaweed 2019 (still relevant). Some entities express interest in adopting a corporate farming model, similar to the approach in palm oil. In BANYU , we are taking a gradual approach, beginning with Plasma Inti (profit-sharing with farmers for seaweed cultivation) before moving towards corporate farming. While large-scale operations align with BANYU's vision, empowering smallholder farmers is crucial for sustainability. Though there are numerous applications in the upstream sector (aligned with BANYU 's vision and proprietary products), our focus lies in being part of the solution for building sustainable commodities. We address challenges at the downstream and on-farm levels, including quality, quantity, technology adoption, and financial access. How about the market?
