EU prosecutor's office is checking Bulgartransgaz over agreement with Turkish Botas.
Scandal in Bulgaria: European prosecutor's office is checking Bulgartransgaz's actions under gas agreement with Turkish Botas.
Bulgarian police are helping employees of the European prosecutor's office to gain access to the office of Bulgartransgaz, the country's national gas operator. Local media report on a prosecutor's investigation related to an agreement between Bulgartransgaz and the Turkish Botas.
It is reported that in early 2023, Bulgaria, through the mediation of Bulgartransgaz, reached an agreement with Botas on cooperation at a regasification terminal and further gas transit. The agreement is valid until the end of 2035. However, after some time, the Bulgarian government considered the agreement with the Turkish side to be unfavorable for the country and attempted to change the agreement. The Bulgarians failed to achieve success in the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Bulgarian parliamentarians initiated an investigation into the fact of the agreement. During the investigation, it was revealed that Bulgartransgaz pays Botas about $500,000 per day for the opportunity to transit gas, but the blue fuel itself does not arrive from Turkey.
In order to study the situation thoroughly, the competent authorities got involved - the Bulgarian and EU prosecutors, national security agencies and others.
The contract between Bulgargaz and Botas was signed for 13 years and allows Bulgaria to use Botas terminals to supply up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas. Let us recall that in early July, Bulgargaz (not Bulgartransgaz) sent a notice to Botas, where it reported that it no longer had the funds to make payments and proposed revising the terms of the contract, including revising the pricing and the possibility of transferring the rights to a third party. Then, Acting Bulgarian Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov said that the negotiations should be completed at the end of July. As we can see, there was no success, and now both the European Commission and the prosecutor's office are investigating the contract.
