In the summer of 2016 Oxford University and GE Healthcare organized a two week Summer School for young talents who are interested in the area of IT solutions and applications in the innovative area of medical technologies.

The course was organized by four European Universities: Oxford University, University of Coimbra (Portugal), Semmelweis University (Hungary), the Medical University of Lodz (Poland) and the Leadership Program of GE Digital.

The curriculum of the Summer School combines tools and methods for team building, innovation & entrepreneurship, business development with domain specific knowledge and experience in IT, medical technologies and medicine (oncology, pathology). The education method was unique due to the strong cross domain focus and GE leadership elements, and by providing opportunity for team work with the stakeholders (pathologists, patients, physicians) when developing business ideas.

The Medical Innovation Summer School on Rare Cancer is connected to the Rare Cancer KIC Project, an EIT Innovation by Idea Project launched in 2016. Participants will work in cross-CLC and cross-domain small teams to generate ideas and business cases aligned with EIT Health business objectives and that can add value to the Rare Cancer KIC EIT Health Project.

Young talents could work together with experts from across the knowledge triangle to address the key challenges of improving the health and care of cancer patients. Students were helped by coaches and experts with forming their business ideas.

Successful graduates of the course become EIT Health Alumni, as part of a European initiative of more than 140 top academic institutions, research organizations and companies.

At the end of the course an international interdisciplinary panel of judges evaluated the business ideas and selected the best ones. The winning team is supported to participate in an EIT Health Accelerator Program and present their winning idea to the EIT Health Community.
