The UK 🇬🇧 House of Lords published this week a report called "Impact of Generative AI on News: A Summary of Key Points". The report acknowledges that Generative AI 🤖 presents a complex challenge to the news sector 📰 , with significant implications for production, distribution, monetisation, and competition. While AI can assist journalists, automate tasks, and potentially create new forms of news content, the report highlights concerns about its potential to disrupt existing business models, erode media plurality, and exacerbate existing challenges around trust and disinformation ⚡ . The report 📕 also made recommendations in the direction of the UK government for addressing the challenges posed by Generative AI: 1️⃣ UK should develop a framework for governing the use of news content in AI training. This should include establishing clear rules on copyright ©️, licensing, and transparency; 2️⃣ UK should quickly update the media plurality regime to account for the role of online news intermediaries, including AI-powered search and news summarisation tools; 3️⃣ UK should also investigate and address anti-competitive practices by tech companies in obtaining data for AI training; 4️⃣ UK must become a champion for responsible AI development and should encourage a market for licensed AI training data. In conclusion, the report urges policymakers, industry leaders, and regulators to proactively address the challenges and opportunities presented by generative AI to ensure a vibrant and sustainable future for the news sector. #moretobedone

Which countries are leading in (and ready for) #ArtificialIntelligence & #GenAI? Boston Consulting Group (BCG) evaluated the readiness of different countries to effectively integrate #AI as well as the exposure of different sectors to it within them. The study highlights that most countries are not ready to unlock the full value of AI or manage the disruption from it. With only few pioneers and a relatively small number of contenders, there is a risk of a global AI polarisation. Key findings of the report: ● 𝗙𝗲𝘄 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀. Out of 73 economies assessed, only five - Canada, Mainland China, Singapore, the UK, and the US - are categorized as AI pioneers. They have reached a high level of readiness by blending elements like investment and infrastructure, turning disruption into a competitive edge. They are in a unique position to guide the world forward in innovation, talent development and AI regulation and ethics. ● 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀. Several economies with high AI readiness are just behind the pace of AI pioneers. While this group of AI contenders includes established economies, it also features emerging ones like India, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE that are using policy and targeted investments to adopt AI on an advanced level. As these economies strengthen their innovation capabilities, they will grow more competitive and influential in the AI space ● 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀. Most economies in the study are not ready for AI disruption. More than 70% score below the halfway mark in categories like ecosystem participation, skills, and R&D. Microsoft has started scraping MS Office documents to train its Artificial Intelligence, opting everyone in, so unless you opt out, your documents are being used to train the AI. To make it worse, the option is buried deep within the settings. To opt out from a Windows computer, open Word or any Office application, go to File --> Options --> Trust Centre (left panel) --> Trust Centre Settings (button) --> Privacy Options (left panel) --> Privacy Settings (button), then uncheck "Turn on optional connected experiences". "How big is ChatGPT's market share of search?" This is a *very* complex question to answer. But, if you're willing to handle some messy data processes, this is the closest I'm able to get to something reasonable. Visit data comparisons come from SimilarWeb. The number of "searches" (or prompts, in the case of LLMs) comes from Datos. And this only includes mobile and web browser traffic, not in-app activity, which could overcount LLMs (since they are more likely than social or search platforms to have mobile app activity). It also doesn't count API calls to any of these services. And it treats every prompt in an LLM as a "search" (which, we know from experience, is wrong). Like I said, messy, but the closest thing we've got right now to a cross-platform comparison that's very generous to the LLMs' share.
