Scalability is an overused word in startups (often uttered by software engineers). Startups go through big changes. These changes come with code rewrites (refactoring more than 40% codebase is a nightmare you shouldn't wish on anyone). Writing scalable, extensible, high-test coverage code isn't worth the trouble here. You'll start seeing ghosts where none exist. Favoring iteration speed and adaptability is a better bet. Outsource, simplify and hack your way through! Cheers! P.S. In large organisations, the investment in extensible code makes sense. Hence the emphasis on low-level design. As a founder, I`m bombarded with decisions. Especially when hiring a developer for my project. Here`s my 4-question framework to cut through the noise ⏬ I ask myself: 🎤 WHO do I need? 🎤 WHAT salary can I offer? 🎤 HOW MUCH time am I ready to spend on the search? 🎤 WHICH method of hiring is the most comfortable for me? (outsourcing, nearshoring, outstaffing, etc.) Answering these questions helps me to make the right decision, save time and costs and focus on essential founder`s tasks 👌 As a business owner who is always busy, I learned one important lesson: time ⌛ is the most valuable thing. Over the past few months I’ve written an extensive tutorial on how to build software applications with Node.js and React. I’m sorry to tell you that this experience didn’t teach me anything about B2B sales, though. But hopefully, it’s still useful for some people out there. From the introduction: The approach of this tutorial is to teach its readers how to build a fully working software application from zero to production. This means two things: 1. You are not required to have done any kind of software development before getting started with this tutorial. It will introduce and explain everything that is needed to build applications in full detail, assuming no prior knowledge or experience. This is the “from zero” part. 2. Building on the foundational knowledge it teaches in the first half, the tutorial will then, step by step, guide you through the process of building a real, full-fledged, and completely working software application, again explaining every detail along the way, and shows how to “deploy” that application — that is, how to make that application available on the Internet for anyone to use. This is the “to production” part. Speaking of B2B sales: I’m afraid you cannot buy this tutorial. That’s because I’m making it available for free, as a series of posts on my blog. Job listings should stop using non-sense requirements like: ❌ 5 years in C# ❌ 7 years in React ❌ 10 years in enterprise software development They are not only poor metrics but also scare away developers. Judging a developer by the number of years is like judging a book by the number of pages. I know many young developers who are already better than many seniors with 10 years of experience but repeated the same year 10 times. Value developers for the depth of their journey, not the length of it.

I see over and over that these specialists are often snapped up by companies that understand their value. That means your hiring process needs to be not just fast, but also enticing. 💡 A skilled engineer can easily become an expert in a niche field, but an expert in a niche field won't always become a skilled engineer. 💡 I've noticed a trend in job descriptions lately: they demand a strange mix of niche expertise and broad skills. For instance: - Experience with iGaming, OpenRTB, Azure, GraphQL - Proficiency in Python, Rust, and Golang (yes, all three!) - Deep understanding of blockchain, AI, and cloud architecture These requirements seem almost comical, but they underscore an important point. I wanted to share an interesting article I read yesterday and really recommend everyone in my network - CTOs, Heads of Engineering and Software Developers - to really understand the benefits of #Kotlin in server-side development if: 1. You haven't had a play around with the language before 2. Are considering modifying your existing tech stack and looking at more modern and performant options Compared to #Java, the Kotlin programming language developed fantastically by JetBrains removes a lot of the 'nitty gritty' work you would otherwise have to work through and requires WAAAAY fewer lines of code than doing the same work in Java! Not to mention, the incredible features around #NullSafety and #Coroutines. Have a read to understand more on the positives of using Kotlin in the JVM languages as well as the benefits of migrating your tech stack to this optimised language. #Tech #SoftwareDevelopment #Coding

🤓 It's not hard to hire a senior developer You're just not offering them what they want. I posted a survey in a Slack group with devs, asking this question: "Would you as a senior developer be open to change jobs NOW if you can work 100% remotely?" (Btw, many of them are social and will come to the office more often. They just want true flexibility and quality of life. And to be fair, they want to do what they love, which is coding, with the minimum amount of interruptions.) Although the dataset is small, the results are interesting. 💸 38 % are willing to take a lower salary if they can work remotely ❓ 17 % would join a company that has some financial uncertainty if they can work remotely 😑 41 % would take a job with a less exciting role, product and techstack if they can work remotely This is an incredible opportunity to hire some seriously great engineers. Especially if you: — Can't pay the highest salaries — Don't build spaceships or AI agents — Are located in a small town or rural area Are there tradeoffs and challenges with (some) remote team members? Of course. But I just can't understand why more companies are not willing to take some risk here. You might regret this when the market turns upwards again. 🕺🏻
