Honors Navigators Peer Mentorship Program

The Honors Navigators Peer Mentorship Program connects first-year students and eligible second-year students with a peer mentor in the Michigan State University Honors College. Academic Scholars Program students, first-generation students, international students, and students of color are supported with additional programming offered by the ASP Advisory Council, the First-Generation Honors Association (FGHA), the Honors Students of Color Coalition (HSOCC), and the International Scholars Advisory Board (ISAB).

What is a mentor?
A mentor is an experienced student in the Honors College who connects with a small group of students for individualized support. Mentors help students succeed by sharing their personal stories & experiences, as well as challenging students to critically engage in their own experiences within & beyond the University.

Mentors participate in an asynchronous training session to help them reflect on their own experiences that will support their mentees academically, socially, and professionally.

Why have a mentor?
Each semester, the goals of the program are:

  • Academic readiness – mentees are connected with resources like help rooms & tutoring and join their mentors in attending study nights hosted by ASPAC, FGHA, HSOCC, and ISAB
  • Community building – while navigating a campus of 50,000 students, mentees join fellow Honors Navigators in attending academic, social, & professional development events hosted around campus and by the Honors College & Academic Scholars Program, ASPAC, FGHA, HSOCC, and ISAB throughout the year
  • Establish social connections – mentees have ownership of the nature of their mentorship experience, whether it be friendship, connection to resources, advice on academic opportunities, anything else or all of the above; mentors help guide students in their transition and connect mentees to staff & programs best designed to support them

As a first-year student, you don’t know what you don’t know. Your mentor can serve as one member of your support network, available to answer questions about MSU & the Honors College/Academic Scholars Program and point you in the direction of people & places that can help you succeed.

Program Expectations
Members of the Honors Navigators Peer Mentorship Program are expected to:

  • Attend at least 3 online or in-person social/academic events throughout the semester
  • Respond to program-related communication from Honors College staff and their mentor/mentee
  • Complete mid-semester and end-of-semester program evaluations
  • Attend the end-of-semester celebration

  • Mentor applications – due September 8
    • Mentor training presentation review & quiz completion due September 8
  • Mentee applications – due September 12

Mentees review mentor profiles and express preference in their match and final matches are announced within two weeks. Attend the one of the Fall Honors Navigators Kickoff events on Wednesday, September 11 or Friday, September 13 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. ET in Bessey 108, including an optional community dinner at Shaw dining hall.
