MPF Ratings today released its July MPF Performance Survey, pointing out that total MPF assets have reached a new record all-time high on the back of MPF’s 5th positive performance month this year. Aided by approximately $6.8bn in performance earnings in July, average MPF account balances are now approximately just under $260,000 at $259,900. The Nasdaq entered correction territory, a warning that MPF members have too much to lose if they get market timing wrong. As per MPF Ratings’ MPF Asset Class Fund Flow Summary,  Q3 2024 saw MPF attract estimated net inflows of $11.51bn, 11.1% lower than MPF’s 5 year quarterly average of $12.95bn and 3.8% lower than its 5 year Q3 average of $11.96bn. Net inflow estimate year-to-date is $37.16bn, 5.8% lower than MPF’s 5 year historical year-to-date average of $39.45bn. Big trouble for Nomura! Nomura Holdings Inc., Japan’s largest brokerage firm, has been penalized by the Japanese government! Japan will be suspending Nomura’s status as a primary dealer for government bonds! And Nomura has admitted to it!!! But why? Due to illegal price manipulation. According to the investigation carried out by the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission (SESC), a Nomura trader made a series of derivative transactions on Japan’s 10-year government bond futures, particularly orders to buy large quantities in 2021. While that is legal, the trader had no intention to buy, as they only sought to influence others to trade in it. The trader made profits of ¥1.48 million by manipulating these bond prices. As a result, the SESC recently imposed a fine of ¥21.8 million! According to experts, this move would be detrimental to Nomura, which ranked fourth among primary dealers, is expected to lose business and market share due to this action as other brokers will benefit and face greater burdens simultaneously. Interestingly, market participants expected this. Citi and a Morgan Stanley-Mitsubishi Corporation JV were fined ¥133 million and ¥218 million and kicked out of the group in 2019 and 2023 respectively for similar crimes!! According to MPF Ratings' latest MPFR Index, the top 10 MPF fund categories showed remarkable performance in July, with returns of between 1.34 per cent and 4.15 per cent. The significant threefold difference in these returns underlines the diversity of performance across the MPF landscape. In particular, returns for US equity funds fell from 4.72% in May to 3.01% in June and further to 1.43% in July, but remained positive throughout the period. Today’s China Top Five:   💡 𝗘𝗧𝗙𝘀 | 𝗝𝗣 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻 JP Morgan (China) is among the first batch of ten firms to file for CSI A500 ETFs. Other applicants include Huatai-PineBridge Fund Management Co., Ltd. (Formerly AIG-Huatai), INVESCO Greatwall Fund Management Co. and Harvest Fund Management. CSI previously announced that the CSI A500 Index will be officially released on September 23. 💡 𝗤𝗗𝗟𝗣 | 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘀 Invesco Ltd. deregistered its QDLP platform from AMAC. In August, it liquidated its only product which was launched back in 2019. MPF Ratings today released the November MPF Performance Survey by noting that MPF’s November performance was directly affected by the US Presidential election result. While US equities rallied, concerns over possible US tariffs and other punitive policy decisions cast a shadow over other markets, in particular Hong Kong and China equities. Despite this uncertainty, MPF members will be pleased to learn that for the 8th month this year, the MPF system has recorded a positive, albeit modest gain, rising 0.14% to take year-to-date gains to 9.72% and putting the system on track to record a double digit return for the 9th time since inception and the first since 2020. MPF Ratings released April MPF performance survey by highlighting the ongoing rebound in Hong Kong and China equities while US equities produced MPF’s worst asset class loss in April just after members moved an unprecedented $9.2bn into the world’s largest share market. The MPF system generated a modest monthly loss of -0.24%. In absolute dollar terms, the investment loss is equivalent to -$2.85bn (or -$600 per MPF’s 4.75m members) however year-to-date investment gains continue to be positive at $25.7bn, or $5,400 per member. After factoring in contributions, total MPF assets end April at approximately $1.18tr (up $1.15bn from end of March and $43.5bn for year-to-date), equivalent to an average MPF account balance of $249,100 (up $240 from end of March and $9,200 for year-to-date).
