Thailand's Commerce Ministry to Address Impact of Chinese Lorries The Ministry of Commerce is set to hold discussions with logistics service providers and other industry representatives to address concerns over the growing presence of Chinese lorries operating in the country. The talks will involve key stakeholders, including the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Thai Industries, and the Thai National Shippers’ Council, aiming to regulate foreign companies and prevent them from gaining an unfair advantage over Thai businesses. The discussions come as the Foreign Trade Department continues to engage with Thai entrepreneurs across various sectors, such as ceramics, apparel, footwear, and construction materials, to mitigate the impact of foreign imports. The department is implementing trade remedies such as anti-dumping measures and countervailing duties to protect domestic industries while urging local businesses to adapt to the competitive landscape.... https://bit.ly/3WXWd92 #Thailand #Business #Logistics #China #SoutheastAsia Via thailand.prd.go.th

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀? 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 书呆子! In Chinese, the term 书呆子 (shū dāi zi) playfully describes a "book nerd"—someone who is deeply immersed in the world of books. It combines 书 (shū), meaning "book," and 呆子 (dāi zi), a word that conveys a kind of endearing absent-mindedness or obsession. While it might suggest a hint of social awkwardness, it’s often used with affection for those who simply can’t get enough of reading. Being a 书呆子 is more than just loving books—it’s about embracing the joy of discovery, the comfort of a well-worn favorite, and that magical feeling of escaping into new worlds through words. Whether it’s poring over ancient texts, devouring modern novels, or losing track of time in a library, 书呆子 wear their love of books proudly. At TalkiGround, we celebrate words like this that connect us to our passions and show us how language reflects our shared experiences. So, what’s your story? Are you proud to be a 书呆子? Let us know in the comments—what does being a book lover mean to you?

Japan may need to smooth excessive yen moves, says Finance Minister Suzuki - https://lnkd.in/gqzHFfsr: Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Friday (May 3) authorities may need to smooth any excessive yen moves that hurt households and companies. "It's desirable for exchange rates to move stably. Excessive moves are undesirable," as they could have adverse effects on households and firms, Suzuki told a news conference on the sidelines of the Asian Development Bank's annual meeting. "If there are excessive moves, we may need to smooth them out," he added. Suzuki declined to comment on whether current yen levels were appropriate, or whether his ministry intervened in the currency market. The yen was poised for its biggest weekly gain in 17 months on Friday, following two bouts of suspected interventions this week to pull the currency away from 34-year lows, with the dollar losing additional ground after softer-than-expected while US jobs data. Extra charges for foreign tourists in Japan are becoming a thing. Extra charges at restaurants, special (higher) prices to enter museums and castles. But how can these be implemented? Is it based on language skills since the claim is that handling English and Chinese speakers is extra work and cost? If so, do we take a language test before entering the restaurant. Or do we show our JLPT certificate? If based on passport, what about foreigners who live and work in the country, some even since birth? Do they have to pay extra or do they get the Japanese price? What do you think? Here's Joe Palermo's take on the mess: https://bit.ly/4c71MaC

PRIVATE PURPLE PRICES IN CHINA 'PLANNING', WHAT OPPORTUNITIES FOR VIETNAM? 🔥 Durian prices in China have dropped sharply in the past month. According to experts, this is a great opportunity for Vietnamese durian. 🌟 According to the General Administration of Customs of China, in April, the import price of durian from Thailand was 5.80 USD/kg, a slight increase compared to the general average of 5.38 USD/kg. In contrast, Vietnamese durian is imported at a price of 4.22 USD/kg. In general, durian prices decreased significantly compared to March, with imported Thai durian at 6.49 USD/kg, Vietnamese durian at 5.23 USD/kg and the average import price in month reached 5.63 USD/kg. 💡Vietnam's market share has increased to 82% in total value in the first 4 months of this year. Despite the heat, Vietnamese durian is "marginally better" than Thailand's due to lower production costs in Vietnam. 🔑 Vietnamese durian exporters have an advantage in price, as they only need to transport durian through the border gate in the North, instead of moving through 2 or 3 border gates like durian from Thailand. How much do you know about the Chinese Hukou system (户口) and what it means for families across China? The Hukou system, implemented in the 1950s, essentially split China’s population into two subsystems: urban and rural. Still in use today, which Hukou you have determines your access to government jobs, healthcare, education, welfare, and other social services. What this means is the majority of the nearly 400 million economic migrant labourers in China that reside in the more prosperous cities, lack the local hukou, and therefore cannot receive the same welfare and opportunities as the city’s local residents. In education, this has led to tens of millions of “split families” as migrant workers in the cities are unable to use free public education for their children in their new city, forcing them to leave their children behind in the village, as so-called “left-behind children” (留守儿童). The disparity of the quality of education between rural and urban schools means these “left-behind children” also receive a lower standard of education. As almost 70% of children in China only have a rural Hukou, they are officially excluded from the best education institutions in the cities, hindering their ability to access better career opportunities. The cycle of inequality is perpetuated. Although reforms to the Hukou system are proposed regularly and multiple provinces have loosened their requirements, residents of wealthy provinces are reluctant to share their prosperity with migrants, particularly when the youth unemployment rates are so high across the country. Along with concerns over the potential effects on GDP and even ideology, a complete reform of the Hukou system still seems far off for China. However, as academics regularly produce material highlighting the potential positive effects restructuring the Hukou system could have on the economy; on boosting consumption; youth unemployment; and even the declining birthrate, the question arises more and more: could a serious Hukou reform be the answer China is looking for? #hukou #educationinchina #leftbehindchildren

Five countries have recently revoked preferential visa treatment for Taiwan passport holders, influenced by pressure from China, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A report by the National Audit Office indicated a decrease in countries offering such benefits, from 171 to 166 in a few months. The ministry acknowledged some countries' changes were due to Chinese government pressure but did not provide specifics. Botswana's alteration of Taiwan's designation in its e-visa system, which prevents Taiwan passport holders from applying for e-visas, is one example. Colombia had previously canceled visa-free entry for Taiwan passport holders, allowing only those with US or Schengen visas to enter without a visa. The ministry committed to promptly informing the public about any changes in visa treatment affecting Taiwan. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #Taiwan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gcQsagMc
