HKTDC Export Confidence Index 2Q24: A Significant Upturn Amid Rising Optimism The HKTDC Export Confidence Index 2Q 2024: Key Findings ·For 2Q24, the findings of the HKTDC Export Confidence Index indicate a significantly improved current performance, as well as a more optimistic business outlook overall. Reassuringly, all of this is underpinned by rising sales, new orders, higher prices and a likely increase in procurement activity. 🔈Crucially, the OverallCurrent Performance Index rose by 12 points to 51.6, while the Expectation Index finished even higher, at 54.3. 🔈Drilling down, Sales and New Orders were the most promising sub-indices. with both Current Performance (57.5, up 19.6 points) and Expectation (59.4, up 9.5 points) edging close to the relative high of 60. 🔈In other positive signs, both the Current (at 54.0) and Expectation (at 57.2) readings of the ProcurementSub-Index exceeded the neutral 50 level, a clear sign of a likely upturn in procurement. In a similarly upbeat finding, exporters also reported higher-than-normal inventory levels in the expectation of rising sales and new orders. 🔈Less positively, though, the Cost Sub-Index remained in negative territory in the case of both its Current and Expectation readings, an indication that upward cost pressures are yet to abate. #HongKong #HKTDC #ExportConfidenceIndex

Preemptively reducing export tax rebates, China plans to fight with the trade war The Ministry of Finance and the State Administration of Taxation jointly announced last Friday a reduction in export tax rebates for many types of products, including the complete cancellation of export tax rebates for aluminum, copper, and chemically modified animal and vegetable oils; export tax rebates for photovoltaics, batteries, and some non-metallic mineral products Lowered from 13% to 9%. There are two major implications behind this reduction in export tax rebates. The first is to proactively reduce the trade surplus in response to the potential tariff measures of Trump 2.0; the second is to reduce tax incentives for exports and use financial resources for more worthwhile investments such as the expansion of domestic demand and consumption. The tax rebate news caused aluminum prices to surge last Friday. The March aluminum price of the LME once rose by more than 7% and closed up by more than 5%. Aluminum stocks also performed well. Alcoa bucked the trend and soared by 6.8%. Century Century Aluminum rose 7.1%.

On May 14, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China announced the results of the "Economic and Business Environment Survey" conducted from March to April. This was the third survey conducted, following the previous one at the end of last year, targeting approximately 8,000 Japanese companies in China and receiving 1,741 responses. Regarding sales trends, 56% of respondents reported "decline" or "slight decline," a 9-point increase from the previous survey. Particularly, companies related to the automobile sector, facing intensified price competition in new energy vehicles, reported a significant increase from 30% to 72% in sales decline compared to the previous survey. For this year's forecast of the Chinese market, 50% of companies responded with "deterioration" or "slight deterioration," an 11-point increase from the previous survey. On the other hand, the percentage of companies reporting plans to "reduce investment" or "not invest this year" decreased by 4 points to 44%, showing a slight improvement. Among the companies that reported reducing investment, some indicated plans to continue investing in research and development and human resource development, highlighting their strategic foresight. Brothers rip off MRT system with fake, defective coins The attached report of May 5, 2024 shatters any feeling of optimism from seeing the cable report aired earlier that the average annual salary among the top tech firms in Taiwan exceed NT2.7M (about US$83,100), which is about triple the average salary in Taiwan. One MRT station in New Taipei City has found unusually large volumes of NT$50 coins in the value-adding machines and high numbers of refunds. Investigations including video footages show the two Tsai brothers have been using fake and defective NT$50 coins to add value to MRT passes to then ask for refunds. One of them used 3,974 coins and the other 1,174 to have transacted some NT$250,000 (about US$7,690). The Tsais claim they bought the coins online from waste recyclers who travel between Taiwan and China, without knowing the sources of said coins or their authenticity. High-end living in Taipei comes with hidden gems The top-left picture of Oct. 21, 2024 shows a sizable lot across a major hospital in Taipei, Taiwan that will be home to a 23-story condo whose unit-area prices will be beyond the reach of most Taiwanese working stiffs. The developer has given it a grandiose but corny name in English. The property faces on the west side a major treed boulevard to offer future owners ample bragging rights. And the location has easy access to all the amenities including public transport. But it is the hidden gems on the east side of the property along an alley shown in the other 3 pictures that make high-end living in Taipei incomparable. Only about 50M away is the tiny take-out food stand shown top-right that would look at home in any ghetto or third-world village, with prices catering to Taiwanese who can only drool while dreaming of owning a unit in said property. Only about 30M away is the mom-and-pop beauty salon shown bottom-left whose Taiwanese operator air-dries towels alfresco even on cool, rainy days. I assume to have a dryer on-site as any professional salon should is against her religion. Not only is the alley served by 2 convenience stores at either end but the bottom-right picture shows a shoe cobbler whose pop-up-tent has not evolved since the 1950s. One piece of advice for potential buyers of upscale condos in Taipei: Always wear rose-colored glasses when strolling around your highbrow neighborhood so as not to shatter the illusion of premium ambiance. #HighEndLivingInTaipeiComesWithHiddenGems
