Spatial planning and housing affordability. In her editorial for the latest issue of PT&P, Mee Kam Ng discusses the causes of housing unaffordability in Hong Kong. According to metrics published by Demographia International Housing Affordability Reports, Hong Kong has topped the unafforadability since 2011. Demographia International has repeatedly argued that restrictive land use planning is to blame. But is this the case? Mee Kam Ng gives a succinct overview of other factors that have shaped development in Hong Kong, showing that it is actually the lack of spatial planning-- including because of colonial decisions and reactivity to China's use of Hong Kong as a regional port--that has created the artificial shortage of land supply. Recent Master of Science Dissertation at Architectural Association [EmTech] – NOTUN by Darya Holub, Hankai Ye, Chuyu Zhang This thesis tackles the challenge of increasing vulnerability in coastal areas of #Bangladesh due to seasonal #flooding and #cyclones exacerbated by #climate change. The research offers an exploration of traditional #disaster #management strategies and proposes #bio-based #construction solutions. By integrating #bamboo and innovative materials such as #biodegradable bricks, the thesis addresses the need for sustainable #coastal architecture that can withstand extreme weather conditions. The inclusion of #FiniteElementAnalysis and #CFD experiments enhances the understanding of building performance under high wind and flood conditions. The research encompasses both large-scale urban strategies and detailed material experiments. #Adaptive water management strategies, coupled with #vernacular housing solutions, offer a path forward for mitigating the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities. The computational methodology incorporates #genetic algorithms and #agent-based modelling in order to devise solutions that are #optimised for the unique environmental challenges of the region. I’m thrilled to share the publication of my latest published research paper, "Climate Adaptation in Carbon Neutral Cities: The Role of Clustered Buildings for Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization in West Asian Cities," at the International Conference on Urban Climate, Sustainability, and Urban Design. This research explores the potential of clustered buildings in urban design to significantly improve energy efficiency and accelerate decarbonization efforts in West Asia. By examining climate adaptation strategies within a carbon-neutral framework, the paper contributes to a sustainable future aligned with global carbon reduction goals. The Centre for Liveable Cities and The Seoul Institute (SI) co-organised the Futureproofing Ageing Infrastructure roundtable in May 2024, with participants from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) (URA), Housing & Development Board (HDB), and JTC Corporation (JTC), along with representatives from Seoul Housing (SH). [COP16 UN Convention on Biological Diversity] Biodiversity forms the basis of life on Earth, which human is a part of. Planetary boundary framework defines biodiversity as one of nine boundaries that help regulate the planet’s operating system, some suggest that human has already crossed the threshold. While there are different understanding to where the “tipping point” is (or was!), all agree that human activities are continuing to dangerously destabilize life on Earth. As landscape architect, it’s our daily work to intervene with our built-environment. It ought to be part of our responsibilities to ensure everything we do is nature-positive, and we can’t do that alone. Through collaboration, education, and actions, we face the challenges together. EAEV070 - Model of Sedimentation Within Coastal Ecosystems by Kevin Hao from Knox Grammar School Exploring the impact of future climate trends on sedimentation processes in coastal ecosystems, this project unveils emerging risks to coral reefs, wetlands, and seagrass meadows. By simulating sediment erosion/deposition over a hundred years in the Burdekin region of Queensland, Australia, using Badlands model, the study highlights areas vulnerable to coastal sedimentation. Our experience with. greenhouse emphasizes the repercussions of overlooking these nuances, as witnessed with mold growth affecting crops due to unsuitable misting systems. The call to action resonates powerfully: avoid blindly replicating designs and prioritize scientific understanding. Drawing insights from ancestral knowledge can be instrumental in selecting suitable materials and methods that align with the unique microclimate of a location. In essence, this post underscores the significance of informed decision-making in engineering and architectural endeavors, advocating for a thoughtful and scientific approach over mere visual aesthetics.
