The overall ranking of Best Countries measure global performance on a variety of metrics. South Korea fell behind China in the survey rankings to determine the world's best country.Switzerland topped the list, following 2022. The U.S. News & World Report, an American magazine, recently conducted a survey of countries around the world from various perspectives and announced the ranking of "the world's best countries." Japan finished sixth, China was 20th and South Korea was 21st. This survey is to evaluate each country by scoring it from 73 perspectives classified into 10 categories, including advancedness, cultural influence, tradition, and business environment. This time, the results of the 2023 version conducted in 87 countries were introduced. Switzerland topped the list, following 2022. Economic and political stability, popularity as a tourist destination and residence, efforts to achieve climate goals, low unemployment, and high education levels were highly praised. Japan's ranking was sixth, maintaining the same ranking as in 2022. Among the 10 evaluation items, the highest score was 'entrepreneurship', which consisted of innovation, a large number of educated populations, and fidelity of digital infrastructure. The field with the lowest score was 'social purpose'. China finished 20th. It ranked second in the global power field and eighth in the entrepreneurship field. However, it received poor scores in areas such as social purposes (78th) and adventure spirit (61st). South Korea ranked 21st after China. Japanese Chipmaker Rapidus Corporation Faces Logistics Hurdles at Hokkaido Plant Rapidus, a leading Japanese chipmaker, is grappling with logistical challenges at its Hokkaido plant due to restrictions on transporting dangerous materials through the Seikan Tunnel. The 54-kilometer tunnel, including a 23-km section under the Tsugaru Strait, prohibits trains from carrying high-pressure gas and inflammable liquids, crucial for semiconductor production. This forces Rapidus to rely on costly marine transportation, impacting overall material costs. While Taiyo Nippon Sanso Innovation plans to send industrial gases by sea for Rapidus' production trials, the company faces rising expenses compared to TSMC's operations in Kyushu, which benefit from more direct logistics via road bridges. Additionally, the entire semiconductor sector in Japan is facing challenges like a truck driver shortage and the need to decarbonize supply chains. Japan Material Co Ltd has initiated a dual-mode transportation program combining rail and truck, reducing CO2 emissions by about 55%. However, this new logistics network excludes Hokkaido, leaving Rapidus to find solutions for its isolated plant. Labor market reforms hit the realities of demographic decline and labor market shortages across various segments of Japan. A perfect storm is brewing in Japan that will result in accelerated changes in Japan Inc. Recently Uniqlo announced an initiative to have 80% of their middle management being foreign in the next several years, companies like Toyota have launched new companies to tap into global talent markets and your average convenience store in Tokyo is basically run by at least 50% foreigners (big change for those of us who have been here for 10+ years). The TEPCO Power Grid (PG) announced on the 10th that it has started demonstrating the use of storage batteries to stabilize the transmission and distribution network in Tochigi Prefecture. Predict electricity supply and demand based on weather forecasts and system usage, and instruct power storage companies to store electricity on storage batteries and electric vehicles (EVs) when electricity exceeding the capacity of the power grid is likely to flow.

Managing Singapore’s foreign worker quotas can be challenging. Work Permit quotas vary by sector—35% in services and up to 87.5% in construction.  - Additionally, quotas for workers from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) differ between manufacturing and services. This complexity requires careful planning.   Let me share a recent success story where we helped a client navigate these regulations effectively. Our client, a mid-sized construction company, was expanding rapidly and needed to hire more workers. They were unsure about the quota limits and the monthly levies they would face. They came to us for guidance on how to hire the right mix of local and foreign talent while staying compliant. Here's how we helped them: 📌 we started by assessing their current workforce and understanding their hiring needs. Using the quota calculator, we determined the optimal number of Work Permits and S Pass holders they could hire without exceeding sector limits. 📌 For roles requiring specialized skills, we recommended hiring Employment Pass (EP) holders. Since there are no quotas for EP holders, this gave them more flexibility. We ensured that the candidates met the minimum salary requirement. 📌We calculated the monthly levy costs based on the number of Work Permits and S Pass holders. This helped the client budget effectively and understand the financial implications of their hiring decisions. 📌To reduce dependency on foreign workers, we advised investing in training programs for local employees. We helped them access government grants and initiatives to support these training efforts. We provided continuous support by keeping them updated on changes in MOM regulations and advising on best practices for compliance. Our client successfully expanded their workforce while staying within the quota limits and managing their levy costs effectively. By hiring a mix of skilled EP holders and well-trained local employees, they built a strong, diverse team that supported their growth. Understanding Singapore’s foreign worker quotas doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right guidance and tools, it’s possible to stay compliant and build a thriving workforce.
