“This process has started in Hong Kong, and some virtual banks will grow and strengthen their brand,” says Barbaros Uygun 胡博思of Mox Bank. “These winners will mature into sizeable franchises and become primary banks.” Ugyun is too polite to say it out loud, but he's obviously confident Mox will be such a winner. This profile is from a series of DigFin Group CEO interviews at virtual banks asking them how they intend to become primary banks, that is, the place where customers place the bulk of their deposits. So far the numbers are actually not that good, with deposits falling and deposit sizes plummeting among the eight licensed digital banks in Hong Kong. Mox is the successful outlier in terms of customer numbers but it will still need to translate that into the kind of step changes that boosted the likes of Revolut, Nubank or KakaoBank – in an era when capital has become expensive. MPF Ratings today released its July MPF Performance Survey, pointing out that total MPF assets have reached a new record all-time high on the back of MPF’s 5th positive performance month this year. Aided by approximately $6.8bn in performance earnings in July, average MPF account balances are now approximately just under $260,000 at $259,900. The Nasdaq entered correction territory, a warning that MPF members have too much to lose if they get market timing wrong. B2B Cambodia Market Update April 23rd Cambodia Securities Exchange Index down 1.52 points, or .38% to 422.37 marking 6 straight days of losses. During this losing streak the index has dropped 2.8%. Share volume was light at 53,016 shares trading hands with Acleda Bank dominating trading, representing 77% of shares traded and 90% of the value traded. The stock was unchanged in the trading session. Upside Sihanoukville Autonomous Port +40 to 12,240 Downside Phnom Penh Autonomous Port -120 to 12,380 Is ACLEDA Bank Plc. a Buying Opportunity The Stock is trading at 8,300 per share which is 64% of Book Value, which is 12,977 and a Price Earnigs Ratio (P/E) of 5.84 despite strong revenue growth, although earnings were down 20% in 2023. Comparatively, the United States largest bank, J P Morgan is trading at almost a double P/E at 11,44. ACLEDA is looking like a bargain. Khmer Riel to USD was flat on an unchanged USD Dollar Index (DXY). Gold continues to slide, down USD 33 to USD 2,313.30. Oil (Brent Crude), unchanged. Dow Futures pointing to a higher New York open, up 55 points.

Five consortiums are vying for three virtual bank licences this week as Thailand enters new era of digital disruption in financial services. These are SeaMoney Thailand, which operates ShopeePay and SPayLater; SCB X, Siam Commercial Bank’s holding group; Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, under TrueMoney; Gulf Energy in partnership with Krungthai Bank; and VGI in partnership with Bangkok Bank. The new virtual banks are expected to serve two market segments: the estimated 63% of Thais who are unbanked (18%) or underbanked (45%) and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) who face barriers to obtaining loans from traditional banks. The nation’s 2.9 million SMEs form the backbone of the Thai economy, accounting for 99% of all businesses and creating 9.7 million jobs. However, many have complained of difficulty obtaining credit from traditional lenders. Virtual banks are expected to help plug this gap. Almost 300 participants from more than 100 banks attended today’s industry sharing session, “Journey to Operational Resilience: Mapping and Testing,” co-hosted by the HKMA and The Hong Kong Association of Banks. In her opening remarks, Carmen Chu, Executive Director (Banking Supervision) of the HKMA, shared the positive progress made by banks in putting in place robust operational resilience frameworks. She also highlighted the remaining challenges in mapping and scenario testing exercises, as well as the importance of keeping the momentum in the coming months. The HKMA will continue to proactively work together with the industry, noting the increasingly far-reaching consequences of operational disruptions in today’s interconnected world. Panel speakers included Marina Tong of HSBC, Rose Kay of Standard Chartered, Peter Law of Bank of China (Hong Kong), and Ricky Woo of DBS Bank, who shared valuable insights and good practices for mapping the interdependencies of banks’ critical operations. #Maybank Research Pte based in #singapore (under Maybank Group) in her recent report forcasts #vietnam and other 5 ASEAN economies secure the positive GDP growth rate in 2024 and 2025. The gross domestic product (#GDP) growth of six ASEAN countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - will recover to 4.5% and 4.7% in 2024 and 2025, respectively, from 4% in 2023, according to Maybank Research Pte Ltd forecast. In a report 'ASEAN Frontiers: The New Trailblazers', researchers from Maybank said the recovery in GDP growth will be driven by manufacturing and exports, particularly electronics, which are supporting a modest growth recovery in the first half of the year. The Monetary Authority of Singapore has updated the Guidelines on Fair Dealing – Board and Senior Management Responsibilities for Delivering Fair Dealing Outcomes to Customers [FSG-G04] on 30 May 2024. A key change is that the scope of the Guidelines has been expanded to apply to all financial institutions, and all products and services they offer to their customers. Banking products are a dime a dozen in Singapore. But there is a segment of consumers that experience more gaps than they need to when it comes to financial solutions. When we spoke to them, a common sentiment that they had was skepticism with banks in general. Why would banks help them at the expense of making money? To get there, we first need to fully understand these ground truths, insights that tell us where our customers are coming from, including the emotions that drive their motivations.
