🌟 Celebrating Inclusion and Community 🌟 At SGF, we believe that every child deserves to be part of a loving, inclusive community. Dan Wilkins said it best: "A community that excludes even one member is no community at all." Are you a parent? Talking to your child about children with disabilities is an important step in fostering empathy, understanding, and inclusivity. Here are some tips on how to approach these conversations and answer their questions⤵ 1. Start Early and Be Honest: Use age-appropriate language to explain disabilities. Honest, straightforward conversations can help demystify disabilities and reduce any fears or misconceptions. 2. Encourage Questions: Create a safe space for your child to ask questions. It's natural for children to be curious, and encouraging their questions helps them learn and understand. 3. Use Positive Language: Focus on the abilities and strengths of children with disabilities. Highlight that everyone has different abilities and that it's okay to need help sometimes. 4. Teach Empathy and Respect: Emphasize the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect. Explain that children with disabilities have the same feelings and desires as they do. 5. Model Inclusive Behavior: Show your child how to be inclusive through your actions. Include children with disabilities in activities and social interactions, demonstrating that everyone is valued and welcome. 6. Read Books and Watch Shows Together: Find children's books and shows that feature characters with disabilities. These resources can be great conversation starters and provide relatable examples for your child. 7. Highlight Similarities and Differences: Help your child see that while children with disabilities might do some things differently, they have many things in common, such as enjoying playtime, having friends, and liking similar activities. 8. Use Real-Life Examples: If your child knows someone with a disability, use that relationship to explain and normalize disabilities. Share stories about how that person participates in activities and what makes them unique. 9. Address Misconceptions and Stereotypes: Gently correct any misconceptions or stereotypes your child might have heard. Explain that disabilities are not something to be feared or pitied, but just another aspect of diversity. 10. Be Patient and Open: These conversations can take time and might need to be revisited as your child grows. Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS SP) has been working since 1994 to create safe and nurturing environments for children by raising awareness, increasing understanding, and implementing evidence-based interventions. Collaborating with local communities, partners, schools, and government, ICS SP focuses on promoting the well-being of children, their families, and communities. From 2021 to 2024, ICS SP, in partnership with Wellspring Philanthropic Fund and Eriks Development Partner, has been implementing a whole school project across 44 primary schools in six counties in Kenya. This initiative aims to prevent violence and improve learning outcomes by using schools as entry points to work with children, families, and communities. The project has positively impacted 35,200 learners, 930 school leaders and teachers, and 26,400 parents and caregivers. In 2016, Save the Children raised alarms about a literacy crisis in Thailand, highlighting that over 30% of 15-year-olds were "functionally illiterate," according to the Programme for International Student Assessment. This means they lacked the necessary skills to handle daily tasks and employment that required reading beyond a basic level. Fast forward to February 2024, and the World Bank and Equity Education Fund (EEF) reported that two-thirds of Thailand's youth and adults struggle with basic text comprehension, making simple tasks like following medical instructions challenging. Irene A. Zijp LLM MSc, founder of the Laudara Foundation, recently delved into these issues in a blog post. She examined the challenges within Thailand’s primary school system and introduced the Tai Wisdom Association, which is dedicated to addressing the literacy issue community by community. "I have zero ECA, what can I do?" "I still have time to develop ECA's but not sure how I can start." We repeatedly heard these concerned voices from South Asian high school students and even gap-year students since the very early days of DP Tutorials. As we reached more and more potential applicants, that frequency only increased. This led us to coming up with a platform called "ECA Adda" (means "hanging out about ECA" in Bengali), which creates awareness about both existing and potential ECA opportunities as well as ideas for high school and gap year students by sharing the links of those opportunities and giving a quality space of chatting about innovative ECA ideas with community peers from similar backgrounds and missions, provides the opportunity to create clubs on any types of missions and ideas as well as host sessions together in those clubs, and weekly attend interactive live Zoom sessions (which kept recorded for those who cannot join live) taken by different people experienced in their respective fields. We already have sessions taken by International Biology Olympiad Bronze Medalist Raad Sharar, Two-time Inrernational Robotics Olympiad Silver Medalist Israfil Shaheen Arannya, Vanderbilt University student Pritha Saha, Eastern Michigan University professor Bud Gibson, META intern Nowshin Anber, among others. We already have Foreign Language Club, Art and Photography Club, Creative Writing and Essay Club, Public Speaking Club, Chess Club,  Gaming Club, and Rebellion Club, on our Discord community. To keep things as organized and efficient as possible, we have separate Discord channels in our server for different types of ECA's and other opportunities, called "astronomy", "artificial intelligence", "ap exams", "screenwriting", "scholarships", and so on, where ECA opportunities are shared twice a week. Project Possible is an innovative collaboration between SWING Thailand, Stichting EqualAF Co.Ltd, NYU, and Evident that will support LGBTQ+ populations that are vulnerable to trafficking in Bangkok and Pattaya. The activities will provide access to safe and sustainable future opportunities that enable participants to leave the risk of trafficking situations. 👷‍♂️ Our team is hard at work to create the training and tools that will make up the Project Possible activities! We know that trauma-informed care isn’t overly common in supports for boys who have experienced child sexual exploitation and abuse (see our article from last year: https://lnkd.in/guSBCjT8) and as we are researching trauma-informed care for adult and LGBTQ+ trafficking survivors, we are finding the same thing. Truly considering the ways that trauma can impact people is a critical aspect of our theory of change. We know that if you are hypervigilant and worried about your physical and psychological safety, you aren’t going to perform your best at education or vocational training. So we want to properly work with the systems around Project Possible participants. ❗ If you know of any great examples of counter-trafficking programming that has considered the effects of trauma on its beneficiaries, please feel free to share! The Tanoto Foundation, founded in 1981 by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto, is a philanthropic organisation based on the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to realise their full potential. The foundation’s philosophy centres around harnessing the transformative power of education and research to create equal opportunities and improve lives. To date, the Tanoto Foundation has made significant impacts through various projects of passion, including improving learning environments, developing future leaders, and advancing medical research and sciences. Benny Lee, CEO of the Tanoto Foundation, emphasised the foundation's longstanding commitment to medical philanthropy, noting that despite over 15 years of support in this field, the establishment of the MRF marks a new chapter. The fund, launched in September 2023, aims to bridge the gap between small-scale initiatives and large-scale projects, focusing on impactful discoveries and fostering sustainable giving in medical research. Lee highlighted that the foundation’s SGD 5 million annual funding is intended to catalyse additional funding opportunities and nurture local research talent, ultimately improving healthcare outcomes in Singapore and beyond​​​​.
