  • PolyU aviation researcher supported by Google to advance urban positioning and navigation technologies Urban navigation has undergone substantial technological advancements in recent decades, enhancing smart living environments while improving human life. With his ongoing research in this impactful field covering location-based services and navigation and positioning technologies, Dr Li-Ta Hsu, Associate Head and Associate Professor of the PolyU Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, and Limin Young Scholar in Aerospace Navigation of PolyU has received an unrestricted grant from Google to advance research in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and sensor fusion technologies. Titled “Research on 3D Mapping Aided GNSS Precise Positioning for Vehicular Applications,” Dr Hsu's awarded project centers on a novel urban positioning and navigation method to be used in mobile phones and intelligent vehicles. In densely built-up urban areas with skyscrapers like Hong Kong, GNSS positioning may be inaccurate as satellite signals are reflected off buildings. The new method utilizes 3D mapping technology to calculate the length and strength of the reflection of signals, thereby achieving a remarkable lane-level positioning accuracy in urban areas.  Dr Hsu has previously worked with Google’s Android Location Team in Mountain View, California as a visiting research scientist. During his visiting, he collaborated closely with industry leaders to enhance mobile positioning technologies by improving the accuracy and reliability of GNSS and sensor fusion. The outcome of his research has been applied to location services on Android devices, benefitting a large number of phone users worldwide. To address this challenge, a multidisciplinary team from PolyU, comprising experts from the Department of Health Technology and Informatics and the Industrial Centre, has leveraged cutting-edge mixed reality technology at the Hybrid Immersive Virtual Environment (HiVE) to create a more reassuring setting for children during radiotherapy preparation.💖 💪Supported by the Lee Hysan Foundation and the Research Grants Council’s Research Matching Grant Scheme, the HEROCARE (Holistic Empowerment in Radiation Oncology) programme at PolyU offers comprehensive workshops that include personalised preparatory sessions, treatment rehearsals, and on-site hospital support. This initiative aims to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of paediatric cancer patients throughout the radiotherapy process. To date, the programme has achieved a 70% reduction in daily treatment times and significant improvements in participants' physical and emotional health. Research indicates that 88% of participating children have completed radiotherapy without anaesthesia, securing extensive support across Hong Kong. By leveraging PolyU’s research facilities and expertise, HEROCARE is an exemplary model of integrating experiential compassionate learning with clinical service, fostering a sustainable support system that benefits patients, their carers and healthcare professionals.👩⚕️ 理大「理伴童行 HEROCARE」計劃運用沉浸式技術減輕癌症兒童對放射治療恐懼 接受放射治療的癌症兒童常因大型儀器、機械聲音和獨自在治療室而感到恐懼。 👩⚕️ ⬇更多|More https://polyu.hk/qKVLz #PolyU #RIO #PolyUResearch #Researcher #Innovation #Radiotherapy #ChildrenCancer #HiVE #anaesthesia #HEROCARE #immersive #FRIENDS理伴童行 #LeeHysan #IndustrialCentre
