Professor Lyu Aiping, our Vice-President (Research and Development), was recently invited by Elsevier to join a key conversation on the global impact of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at the #QSHigherEdSummit APAC in Macau. As a leading figure in TCM, Professor Lyu shared the latest global developments of TCM in research and education, as well as his visionary outlook for TCM as a global research discipline. “Health is health, be it treated by Chinese medicine or Western medicine or others,” he emphasised. Professor Lyu highlighted the importance of transdisciplinary approaches, integrating life science and data science into TCM treatments. Dr Zhou Yingying, Head of Research Analytics at Elsevier China, supported this with data showing TCM’s research impact across medicine, biochemistry, pharmacology, and beyond. The panel, moderated by Dr Jingwen MU, Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning of HKBU, was a full house, drawing scholars and industry experts alike. Stay tuned for the joint research landscape study by Elsevier and Hong Kong Baptist University, which is set to offer new insights on how data can serve as a global common language in understanding TCM’s worldwide profile. Supported by a generous donation from the Bank of China (Hong Kong), the Scheme has provided over 31,000 treatment sessions to elderly stroke patients and those at medium to high risk of stroke. An exhibition was held from 26 to 27 October to showcase the Scheme’s remarkable results. We were honored to have officiating guests, including Dr. Chung Chi-ho, Commissioner for Chinese Medicine Development of the Chinese Medicine Unit of the Health Bureau; Mr. Peter Ng, Assistant General Manager of the Public Sector and Institutional Business Department of the Bank of China (Hong Kong); and Professor Chan Wing-kwong, member of the Legislative Council; Ms. Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary of HKBU; Professor Li Min, Executive Associate Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine at HKBU; and Ms. Wong Chui-yan, Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council. Under the Scheme, nearly 470 stroke recovery patients received more than 28,000 treatment sessions, including acupuncture, massage therapy, and Chinese medicine. This led to significant improvements in their self-care abilities and cognitive functions, resulting in an enhancement of life quality. The Scheme also provided free Chinese herbal tea treatment for stroke prevention to over 1,000 high-risk individuals. Data shows that body constitutions of these participants improved after four months of treatment, effectively reducing their risk of stroke. Furthermore, around 138 elders were trained to serve as “Senior Ambassadors for Stroke Prevention” actively promoting awareness through over 200 talks and an informative website. SCM will continue to support and initiate various community Chinese medicine services, making greater contributions to public health. #HKBU #HKBUSCM #SCM #SchoolofChineseMedicine #Stroke
