The Automated Multiplex Diagnostics System, developed by Prof. Terence Lau, #HKBU Interim Chief Innovation Officer, has been recognised by the World Health Organization (#WHO) in the 2024 Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies for Low-Resource Settings. It is considered as an innovative technology with the potential to contribute positively to health systems in low- and middle-income countries, enhancing their access to appropriate, affordable, effective, and safe health technologies to tackle infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases. This all-in-one system automates conventional #PCR processes, enabling the rapid detection of 42 respiratory pathogens in under 1.5 hours without needing extensive laboratory resources or specialised technicians. Initially conceived in 2015, Prof Lau’s co-founded startup has driven forward the system’s commercialisation, building accredited production sites in HK and the Mainland, and supplying it to hospitals and clinics for use. Prof. Lau's commitment to advancing health innovation highlights HKBU's dedication to translating university research into practical applications that benefit not only Hong Kong but also the nation and the world. Experience #HKBU's Art Tech power at Freespace West Kowloon! The performance “manτεία” (Manteia), written and directed by Dr Peter Nelson, Assistant Professor of Academy of Visual Arts, and Dr Roberto Alonso Trillo - PhD/DMA, Assistant Professor of Academy of Music, will premiere on 22 Dec 2024 (Sun). Manτεία means prophecy or divination. In the ancient world, oracles served as tools for communicating the will of the divine. By recasting a performance made using AI tools as an act of divination, manτεία suggests that our current relationship with AI is evolving in a similar direction. When faced with a system that can synthesise more information than any living human, we find ourselves consulting systems whose functions are more complex than we can design and trusting in rationales whose reasoning we might never truly understand. manτεία returns us to the ancient quest to communicate with the transcendent, by looking for messages in clouds and melodies in noise, and meaning in the immensity of large language models. Don’t miss out on this mesmerising exploration. Secure your tickets now to be part of this thought-provoking and beautiful experience! 📅 22 Dec 2024 (Sun) 🕞15:30-16:30 | 19:30-20:30 📍The Box, Freespace, West Kowloon Ticket: https://lnkd.in/gTcq-Dh9 #HongKongBaptistUniversity #AcademyOfVisualArts #AVA #AcademyofMusic #AM #ArtTech #ArtTechnology #Manteia #AI #ArtificialIntelligent #WestKowloon #Freespace #prophecy #divination #performance Connect with us ITPR - Institute for Innovation, Translation and Policy Research @HKBU

#ITPR is thrilled to partner with the Consulate General of Belgium in Hong Kong to foster creativity and cultural exchange within the film community. Last week, we showcased two exceptional short films by our talented student filmmakers, Miss Chan Wing Ki and Mr Wong King Chau, during a special movie screening event as part of Belgian Days 2024. Miss Chan’s film, “Game Rule,” explores a school prefect's struggle with the rigidity of rules as she confronts the police enforcing her grandmother's illegal street vending. This film won the 2024 Pingyao Corner "Best Student Short Film." Mr Wong’s film, “Evil,” delves into the psyche of a criminologist grappling with his declining mental state while investigating the mysterious disappearance of a former classmate. The event also featured films from students of Institut Supérieur des Arts (#INSAS) and included an insightful fireside chat moderated by Mr Wong Sau Ping Adam, Associate Professor of Practice at #HKBU Academy of Film, with contributions from Ms Chan and Ms Jialai Wang of INSAS. We are proud to witness the creativity and storytelling mastery of HKBU students, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic film community. #HongKongBaptistUniversity #HKBUAcademyOfFilm #HKBUAF #AF #BelgianDays #StudentFilmScreening #FutureDirectors #CinematicStorytelling #FilmSchools #BrusselsMeetsHongKong #ShortFilms #EmergingTalent #FilmFestival #MeetTheFilmmakers #CinemaInnovation #Moviescreenings #Eastmeetswest #Culturalexchange Connect with us ITPR - Institute for Innovation, Translation and Policy Research @HKBU

Economically motivated food adulteration poses health risks, revealing gaps in current food authentication methods. #HKBU Interim Chief Innovation Officer Prof. Terence Lau yesterday presented his pioneering research on "Non-targeted Detection of Food Adulteration Using an Ensemble Machine-Learning Model" at the 11th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Food Analysis (RAFA 2024), offering new solutions to enhance food safety through big data and machine-learning, and addressing current issues in food integrity from an EU-Asia perspective. RAFA 2024 is being held in Prague from 5th to 8th November 2024, gathering 850 food scientists and representatives from 60+ countries to discuss trends in food safety and analysis. Prof. Lau's innovative ensemble machine-learning model proposed a non-targeted approach, that can help detect unprecedented adulteration without looking for specific substances and provide a high accuracy. Industry can reassure food safety without extra tests and manpower. This can help the food industry and regulatory authorities in implementing food surveillance to ensure food safety and security cost-effectively. Prof. Lau’s participation in RAFA 2024 underscored HKBU's commitment to advancing food safety research. The University will continue to foster innovative collaboration to address global challenges and promote safer food practices for public health. #RAFA #RAFA2024 #FoodSafety #FoodAdulteration #MachineLearning #FoodAuthentication #FoodQuality #HealthRisks #FoodResearch #FoodSafety #FoodSafetyMonitoring #SafeFood #PublicHealth #FoodTech #FoodTechnology Connect with us ITPR - Institute for Innovation, Translation and Policy Research @HKBU

Step into the immersive archaeological site of 2099, where art, technology, and cultural preservation converge in the project "Foreseen 2099." Co-founded by #HKBU assistant professor Ms Pat Wong (aka Flyingpig) and assistant professor Mr Chan Ka Chi, this initiative invites the public to explore the cultural significance of Hong Kong's traditional repair shops. Since January 2024, the team has documented six repair shops in Tsuen Wan and San Po Kong, capturing their unique stories and craftsmanship through digital technology to create a digital archive. These shops, specialising in appliance repair, clothing alterations, and jewelry making, embody a sustainable ethos of valuing repair over disposal. The project features an online archive, physical installations, and interactive exhibitions, reimagining the future of these vital small businesses. Curated by the In Time Of initiative from Nan Fung Group, "Foreseen 2099" is currently on display at AIRSIDE (Kai Tak) until 12nd November, 2024. Thank you to Mr Tommy Yip, Co-founder & Managing Partner of @Unicorn Capital Partners, for sharing his insights during "Unlocking Financial Wisdom for Deep Tech Startups" at #HKBU's TriAngle earlier! It was exciting to learn about his entrepreneurial journey in co-establishing Unicorn Capital Partners, a fund-of-funds platform that invests at the forefront of emerging technology and innovation. During the event, Tommy emphasised that startups should not solely seek financial backing from venture capitalists; resources and expertise are equally crucial for success. He advised entrepreneurs to demonstrate their company's potential for scalability and the market’s readiness for growth. For students aspiring to enter this field, he recommended building domain expertise and gaining industry operational experience as foundational steps. We are truly grateful for the chance to gain insights from Tommy’s wealth of experience!
