It is great to learn more enlightening sharing on best practices, new approaches from global perspectives addressing to food safety challenges on day 2 of the China International Food Safety & Quality (#CIFSQ) Conference. Prof. Furong Zhu, Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) of HKBU Faculty of Science, presented his innovative multi-mode photodetection technology to key stakeholders in the food safety sector. This technology offers an IoT solution for fruit quality detection and authentication, with potential applications in the intelligent screening of sulfur-treated Chinese medicinal materials, food quality, and authentication. Two #HKBU start-up companies led by Prof. Furong Zhu (Crimson Vision) and Dr Kangning Ren, Associate Professor from Department of Chemistry (MicroFlow Innovation) showcased their innovations there. Prof. Zhu’s company provides IoT solutions for fruit quality, while Dr Ren’s focuses on microfluidic technologies for combating antimicrobial resistance. We are glad to have an engagement dinner with industry representatives yesterday. Concerns over food quality and safety are on the rise following a recent incident of cooking oil contamination. In an interview, Prof. Terence Lau, Founder and Chairman of the Food Safety Consortium, expressed his concerns, "This scandal actually destroys some of the confidence of the consumer because there are still some companies that do not follow the rules or do not really care about food safety or quality. It will make an impact on the food industry, even though a lot of companies have been doing very well in the past 20 years." The government has initiated an interdepartmental investigation to address the issue. https://lnkd.in/ghw6cANf #edibleoil #publichealth #foodsafety

Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety ordered four pre-packaged spice mix products from India to be recalled recently after it found the pesticide ethylene oxide in samples during regular surveillance. According to Prof. Terence Lau, Chairman of Food Safety Consortium, this cancer causing pesticide ethylene oxide, which is in the form of a gas, was commonly used for sterilisation in food production and processing. The substance should have been eliminated before packaging. He said no official mechanism was in place for different jurisdictions to report irregularities in real-time, but the International Food Safety Authorities Network (Infosan) was set up to make the exchange of information easier on such events. #foodsafety #publichealth #FoodSafetyConsortium #HongKong #FSC Indian authorities launch spices probe after Hong Kong, Singapore pull products from shelves over cancer-causing pesticide https://lnkd.in/guyRhAgi

Food Safety Consortium Chairman Prof. Terence Lau and Director Nelly Lam participated in the 46th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (#CAC46) in Rome earlier this month. As an observer of #Codex, #FSC joined over 200 observers and 189 members in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Commission and the remarkable achievements it has made in promoting international food standards development, protecting consumer health, and removing barriers to trade. Created by the Food and Agriculture Organization (#FAO) and the World Health Organization (#WHO) of the United Nations, Codex develops standards, guidelines and codes of practice related to food safety and quality. We were glad to have engaged in meaningful discussions with international professionals and experts during CAC46. As the first NGO Codex observer from Greater China, FSC supports its whole food chain approach to food safety. We strive to advance it by addressing unmet needs and emerging challenges through multidisciplinary innovation and technologies, as well as enhancing public awareness.
