Addressing serious gaps in the existing international legal framework for combatting wildlife crime #endwildlifecrime
About us
The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime (EWC) is a broad alliance of environmental, policy, legal, business and public health experts; created to address serious gaps in the existing international legal framework for combating wildlife crime and regulating wildlife trade. EWC advocates for, and offers technical support towards, (1) the creation of a new global agreement on wildlife crime and (2) the amendment of existing international wildlife trade laws to include public and animal health in decision making. EWC is hosted by ADM Capital Foundation and chaired by John Scanlon AO (the former Secretary General of CITES), with a steering group comprising the Born Free Foundation, The Food and Land Use Coalition, the Global Environmental Institute and The ICCF Group.

Today, the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime (EWC) participated at the CCPCJ Thematic Discussion on the Implementation of the Kyoto Declaration, having been selected by the UNODC to be the only civil society organization represented in the panel on new, emerging and evolving forms of crime. Our Policy Advisor, Ana Motamayor, presented on the implementation of CCPCJ Resolution 31/1 and the collection of responses from Member States to the questionnaire issued following this resolution. EWC, together with ADM Capital Foundation, conducted an analysis of States’ responses to bring additional insights and perspectives to the data provided by States and offer forward-looking solutions in combating illicit wildlife trafficking (IWT). 🔎 Some of the key insights from our analysis were: - 72% of responding States identified gaps in the legal framework for addressing IWT. - The two most frequently cited gaps were insufficient international cooperation (cited by 55% of respondents) and inconsistent national legislative approaches (cited by 30% of respondents). - 89% of States are in favor of, or open to exploring, a new protocol under the UNTOC on illicit trafficking in wildlife. 📢 The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime is committed to supporting Member States, upon request, through technical assistance and actionable recommendations, particularly as they move to implement the recently adopted UNTOC COP Resolution 12/4 through the establishment of an intergovernmental expert group on crimes that affect the environment. 🌱 Stay tuned for the upcoming publication of our detailed analysis, and let’s keep the momentum going as we head toward the 15th Crime Congress in 2026. #EndWildlifeCrime #KyotoDeclaration #EnvironmentalCrime #CCPCJ John Scanlon AO Sophie le Clue Mark Jones Sam Inglis MSc

In March, the United Nations General Assembly declared November 15th as International Day for the Prevention of and Fight against All Forms of Transnational Organized Crime ‘in order to raise awareness of the threats posed by all forms of transnational organized crime and to enhance international cooperation in this regard’. Wildlife crime knows no borders. It depletes wildlife populations, degrades ecosystems, increases the risk of zoonotic diseases, and deprives governments and local communities of revenue and security. Wildlife crime, estimated at $200 billion annually, ranks as the world’s fourth most profitable crime. Its impact, however, is immense, with losses in ecosystem services valued between $1-2 trillion each year. Despite these figures, the UNODC most recent World Wildlife Crime Report found that despite two decades of concerted action, wildlife trafficking persists and its diversity and geographical scope remain enormous. At the 12th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention against Transnational Crime (UNTOC COP12) last month, a groundbreaking Resolution was adopted on crimes that affect the environment, including wildlife crimes. The Resolution critically calls for the UNODC to convene an open-ended intergovernmental expert group on crimes that affect the environment to, inter alia, consider the possibility, feasibility and merits of any additional protocol to the UNTOC. Today, as we commemorate the first-ever observance of the International Day Against Transnational Organized Crime, we encourage the intergovernmental expert group to consider strengthening the international legal framework to effectively prevent and combat wildlife crime. It is only through a concerted, global effort that these highly destructive crimes can be ended. Thank you to the Prince of Wales, Prince William, for his inspiring, inclusive and enduring leadership over the past 10+ years to stop illegal wildlife trade, most particularly through United for Wildlife (UfW). It was a great pleasure to be a founding member of the UfW Transport Taskforce in 2014, and it has been wonderful to see UfW continue to grow and expand its scope and partnerships over the past decade, as has been on display at the UfW Global Summit in Cape Town, South Africa this week. For more on the Summit see https://lnkd.in/e8h6K5KZ If we persist with our collective efforts, and continue to work together and to bring in new partners, we will prevail. #endwildlifecrime #wildlifetrafficking #wildlife #princewilliam #royalfoundation ADM Capital Foundation Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime Global Coalition to Fight Financial Crime John Cusack Ian Tennant Ana Motamayor Rob Campbell Tom Clements
