The 3GPP Stage 1 Workshop on IMT-2030 Use Cases, held in May 2024, aimed to bring together stakeholders to define potential applications and requirements for the next generation of mobile communication technology, #6G. The GSMA, a global trade body for mobile network operators, likely presented a proposal outlining their perspective on 6G research and development (R&D). The GSMA proposal focused on outlining their vision for 6G R&D. This include: 🟥 Key R&D areas: Identifying critical areas for technological advancements in 6G. Examples include network performance enhancements like higher bandwidth, lower latency, and improved network slicing capabilities. 🟥 Collaboration framework: The GSMA have proposed a framework for collaboration between various stakeholders involved in 6G R&D, including network operators, equipment vendors, research institutions, and regulatory bodies. This would ensure coordinated efforts and avoid duplication. 🟥 Industry needs: The proposal have emphasized the importance of considering industry needs in 6G development. This involve collaborating with different industries to identify specific use cases and ensure the technology addresses their challenges and opportunities. I like Slide 12 - #5G has a long way to go! eSIM revolution continues with Apple with Phones, iPads, Watch, Google with Pixel series, Samsung Electronics it Galaxy S, Fold and A flagships and others democratising the tech and taking it mainstream. Almost hundreds of MNOs/MVNOs across tens of countries now support eSIM domestically for multi-SIM as well as to attract travellers. However, it’s important to understand the pulse of consumers looking to use or already use eSIM for multiple use-cases especially travel, the most popular usecase. As a part of our series of primary surveys, Counterpoint Research team conducted survey among 3,535 respondents in key eSIM devices penetrated markets US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Poland and Japan in their native languages towards the growing trends around eSIM and “travel eSIM” Great findings from our research on the eSIM awareness among consumers. Summarising some findings below: ✈️ 87% of the respondents who have used travel eSIMs rate them “very important” or “important”, showcasing the strong value perception among current users. ✈️ The convenience of instant connectivity and the ability to avoid high roaming fees were found to be the top reasons for travel eSIM adoption. ✈️Those using the eSIM for daily connectivity are more likely to use travel eSIM, as 61% of the respondents who have used the eSIM, have also used it for travel. ✈️ However, despite travel being one of the biggest use cases of the eSIM, adoption remains limited – only 24% of all eSIM-aware consumers chose an eSIM for travel. ✈️ Awareness and perceived complexity remain major barriers to travel eSIMs’ broader adoption, even as early adopters describe eSIM technology as critical. ✈️ The awareness and perceived complexity remain major barriers to travel eSIMs’ broader adoption, even as early adopters describe eSIM technology as critical. Omdia has identified four key domains where Telcos are concentrating their efforts based on public deals : customer, network, security, and cross-industry use cases. Network performance management stands out as the top priority for Telcos in AI, with a focus on solutions like energy management, automation, and anomaly detection. Leading this domain is Ericsson, with its cognitive portfolio software. Virtual assistants are also gaining traction, transitioning from traditional chatbots to LLM-Based agents. Telcos are striking deals with tech giants like Microsoft and Google in this area. Ooredoo Group and Vodafone are at the forefront of integrating AI capabilities into their operations, sales, and marketing strategies. I emphasized the importance of AI-driven cybersecurity measures that go beyond simple protection. In today’s environment, proactive security can become a competitive differentiator.
