    Abstract
User-generated reviews posted on the web through social media channels such as review sites and virtual communities have grown in importance for the tourism industry, but most studies have examined them in the context of traveller planning behavior. The first aim of this thesis is to quantify the impact of user-generated reviews on the performance of hotels as measured by ADR, occupancy and RevPAR. The second aim of the thesis is to explore the managerial perceptions. The study uses a sample of 69 hotels in Crete, Greece, addressed by a quantitative self-completion survey in March 2014. The analysis finds the following. First, there is a relationship for hotels with two or more stars between the number of reviews given and ADR and RevPAR. Second, there is relationship between hotels that answer to reviews and the number of reviews. Third, there is a relationship between the number of photos and hotel performance (ADR, occupancy, RevPAR). Fourth, there is a relationship between awarded hotels with one or more star with the TripAdvisorÕs Certificate of Excellence and ADR and RevPAR. The study did not find any relationships between well-known and less-known hotels and their performance. Additionally, the analysis did not reveal any relationship between ratings and answering reviews with performance. The thesis gives practical recommendations to hoteliers and provides some suggestions for further research.
