These are some lessons I got from her session amidst other: 1. If I make a post that Zenith bank or GTBank is looking for marketers, a great number of people will rush at the offer, they'll even reduce their ages to fit into the requirements. They'll be ready to wear suit and report to work 7am-5pm daily. They'll be ready to go anywhere possible to talk and get customers for the bank, They'll be ready to work under stress, and struggle to meet targets set for them...and so on, only for about 100k monthly. Tell this same person of another opportunity where he'll be his own boss, report to work when he wants, work at his pace, no targets, just market the opportunity to people, and earn more than 100k Weekly (400k monthly). This same person will suddenly realise he can't talk to people 🤔🤷😂😂 Mindset is everything. You're going for a lesser offer because your mind tells you it's more prestigious? WHY ABBREVIATING NAMES CAN COST YOU YOUR JOB Recently, I was on a panel interview with two colleagues. We introduced ourselves, and one candidate kept using nicknames. My name is Ifeanyi, not "Ify," and my colleague Chidinma prefers Chidinma, not "Chi." Despite gentle corrections, the candidate persisted. This might seem like a minor detail, but it's a big red flag in a professional setting. Here's why: 1. Respect & Professionalism: It shows a lack of respect for someone's chosen name. Imagine calling your boss "Oga mi to sure" instead of their name! 2. Lack of Attention to Detail: Small details matter in interviews. Abbreviating names suggests carelessness. 3. Cultural Sensitivity: Names can have cultural significance. Abbreviating can be insensitive. 4. Memory Issues? It raises concerns about remembering important information. 5. First Impressions Matter: A bad impression based on nicknames can linger. It is okay to be unsure sometimes, Here's What to Do: 1. Ask politely: "Excuse me, could I please get your name again?" 2. Use "Mr./Ms./Mx. Last Name": It's formal and respectful. 3. Listen carefully during introductions. 4. Repeat the name back for confirmation. 5. Use "you" if unsure. Same day, two assignments. The morning was spent connecting and re-connecting at the THE HR FOUNDRY (THRF) 5th year anniversary. The afternoon met me at an engagement speaking to the youths of New Estate Baptist Church on how your #personality affects your #careerchoices. It's often hard to juggle the different aspects of your life and the demands they make of you. More often than not, your time is skewed towards the one that seems more urgent...and it's not always the one you prefer. How do you achieve a balance? We all know by now that you can't. What you can do is to remember a few important things. 🔹️You don't have to do everything so delegate when you can. 🔹️Focus on #systems not #tasks so that when you're not there, the system will continue to work. 🔹️ Be fully present at whichever life dimension has your current #focus so that your impact is felt even when you're not there. 🔹️Communicate, communicate, communicate.Let the people in your life understand your #motivations and plans. This way, they understand your #actions. 🔹️Be prepared to make #tradeoffs where necessary. Sometimes, something needs to be sacrificed. One day, five valuable lessons. Most people are enduring at their workplace because of reasons best known to them, however, I have some thoughts to share with you. 1. Your Happiness is your responsibility. Take charge of your happiness let no man define it for you. 2. Never carry your frustrations into your work. One Boss of mine said to me, leave your problems at home because there are many of such here. 3. Don’t let anyone define your happiness. As the saying goes people don’t leave their work but they leave theirs bosses. Never let anyone make you happy at your workplace. 4. Open Letter to the Management of UBA Regarding Graduate Management Acceleration Program (GMAP) Dear Management of UBA, I write to you with deep concern to convey my apprehension over the Graduate Management Acceleration Program (GMAP) of the United Bank for Africa (UBA). As much as the initiative is designed for talent development and leadership among the graduates, the scheme lacks adequate integration, especially for polytechnic graduates. The name "Graduate Management Acceleration program" (Emphasis on GRADUATE) implies inclusivity for all graduates, yet it appears that polytechnic graduates are being excluded from participating in this valuable opportunity. Are we not graduates too? Why should there be discrimination based on the type of institution we attended? Personally, I and several others passed all 3 levels of assessment (the entry test, cognitive assessment, and the case study presentation) for the GMAP program and even got to the executive chat level which is the last phase before being admitted into the banking school. Such success demonstrates that we are capable of providing significant input to UBA’s further development. Scaling through these assessments means that the quality of knowledge and competence is comparable to our colleagues with university education. Thus, it is appalling to be subjected to exclusion based merely on our possession of HND qualifications. I humbly urge the management of UBA and all executives concerned Tony O. Elumelu, C.F.R, Oliver Alawuba, Muyiwa Akinyemi Katrina Modupe Akindele to reconsider the conditions for qualifying for the Graduate Management Acceleration Training. Additionally, it is necessary to make sure that the program would indeed live up to the given name and would accept all graduates irrespective of higher institution background (Polytechnic or University). However, if no changes occur, it is recommended to change the program to its literal meaning UNIVERSITY Graduates Management Acceleration Program to avoid further disappointment in anticipators. Furthermore, i kindly request that you consider this issue critically and adopt both diversity and fairness in the talents that you recruit. In this way, UBA can lead the rest of the banks to offer equal opportunities for qualified graduates and ensure they perform tremendously to benefit the organization. Last week marked the seventh week we embarked on a journey to provide graduate students guidance and mentorship on preparing and applying to graduate school with increased chances of securing admissions and scholarships abroad. Last Saturday, we had our first small group review of the mentees’ graduate school application kits. All the mentors facilitated the session in small groups, reviewing each mentee's compiled application kit, academic CV, and cold emails and providing feedback with creative suggestions on improving them for positive outcomes. Before this time, the mentees learned the nitty-gritty of writing an academic CV and cold emails through mentor-led and university-faculty-led sessions in a large group. At BSWE, each mentoring session is followed by hands-on practice and application of the concepts discussed. Mentees wrote and turned in a copy of their academic CVs and cold emails through Google Classroom. The mentors reviewed the submissions and provided feedback. The small group sessions provided an extensive platform for the mentors to discuss the feedback in detail with the mentees with a progressive plan. It was indeed a long and productive evening with the mentees. Seeing them making outstanding attempts and implementing all they had learned so far was fulfilling. Dear Mentees, we are proud of you! As much as you work hard on standardizing efficiencies on the traditional HR transactional and functionality pieces that pass your desk at that level, also; get to understand the organization wholesomely, speak the dialect of the organization's business, master the art of how to speak on the data at hand smartly, support the business operations and be a leader agent of that desirable culture that speaks of optimizing performance to the top coterie at your workplace. Fresh Marketing Graduate Rosheedat Busari 🎓 My Journey to Graduation: From Reluctance to Passion in Marketing Last week, I graduated from the University of Ilorin with a degree in Marketing. This achievement is more than just a milestone; it’s a story of growth, resilience, and a journey filled with challenges and breakthroughs. It all began when I was 15. I had my heart set on studying Accounting, but I was offered Marketing instead. To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled. I considered professional exams like ICAN or tax classes (TICN) as an escape, thinking that I’d switch my career focus as soon as I could. My lack of interest in Marketing in those early days was obvious, and it showed in my 100-level results. I felt lost and uncertain, convinced that this was not the path I had envisioned. But life had more lessons in store. I also faced unexpected challenges beyond academics. My time in university was stretched by nearly two years due to the ASUU strike and the COVID-19 pandemic, turning my dream of finishing at 18 into a distant goal. It was disheartening, and I wondered if my university journey would ever feel like the right fit for me. Then, during the strike in my 200-level, everything changed. I was introduced to social media marketing, and it completely shifted my perspective on Marketing. For the first time, I could see the possibilities and potential in my field. I realized that Marketing wasn’t just about theories and textbooks; it was a dynamic world of creativity, strategy, and communication. I fell in love with the industry, and from that moment, I made a decision: it was going to be Marketing all the way. With renewed passion, I took courses, internships, and freelancing roles to build my skills in social media marketing and marketing strategy. Each experience helped me understand the field better and deepened my commitment. I started building my portfolio and gaining hands-on experience, which not only improved my skills but also my confidence. Marketing, once a course I dreaded, became my driving force.

Hello LinkedIn Fam, How is the weather today? So, I have had conversations and interviews with job seekers concerning crucial aspect of job searching and I discovered that many of them are not “Prepared for sudden opportunities”, hence the title of this write-up. If you have been job-hunting for a while and you don’t have basic job application materials like your CV, Academic Certificates, Passport Photographs, Valid ID Cards etc on your mobile device, then I suggest you become a crooner of one of the old taglines of MTN Nigeria, henceforth. The only challenge you might have would be to make the hard copies but then the world has gone digital so your soft copy would do just fine. They say luck is when opportunity meets preparation, we often miss out on opportunities simply because we aren't prepared. In the competitive job market, it is essential to be ready at all times, therefore, here are a few tips out of many that would help you stay prepared and ahead of the game: 1. Keep a Soft Copy of Your Documents Handy: Make sure your CV alongside headshot, certificates etc are uploaded and stored on your phone, email, or cloud storage. You never know when you might need to send it quickly. 2. Have a Professional Email Signature: Include your contact information and a brief professional title or summary. This makes it easy for potential employers to reach out to you. 3. Prepare a Basic Cover Letter Template: Have a generic cover letter ready that you can quickly customize for different job applications. 4. Stay Updated on Job Openings: Regularly check job boards, company websites, and LinkedIn for new job postings. 5. Network Actively: Engage with professionals in your industry, attend webinars, and participate in relevant groups. Sometimes, opportunities come from unexpected connections. Did you know that your breakthrough is in your hands? If you doubt me, keep reading! Growing up, I struggled with an inferiority complex. It followed me through my school years and even into university. I remember how, when a lecturer would ask a question in class, I would never attempt to answer, even when I knew the correct response. I feared my classmates would laugh at me or point out my mistakes. I was shy, far from outspoken, and it took me years to gain the confidence to express myself. But after college, things started to change. Slowly but surely, I worked on breaking down the walls that held me back. I made new friends, read books, and practised speaking up. Fast forward to few months ago...I had a conversation with someone, and as I shared my thoughts and experiences, this person said I was being too outspoken... In his words: "Don't you think you're being too outspoken?" Seriously! In that moment, I realised something… It took me so long to become the person I am today. I fought hard to gain my voice, and now someone was questioning it. So, I withdrew from that friendship. I just understood i couldn't surround myself with people who discouraged me from expressing who I truly am. This experience reminded me of the song "Speechless" from Aladdin by Naomi Scott: " The worst thing that can happen to a person is being surrounded by people you can't freely talk to." Now, if you're struggling with feelings of inferiority, know this… Surround yourself with people who encourage your growth, who help you become the best version of yourself. Avoid those who try to silence you. Last week Saturday, we had the first Tekedia Live session for Class of Board 14 where we disambiguated "Growth, Innovation and the Mission of Companies" delivered by Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe. We went ahead on a study of understanding the advantage of serving ignored markets using an insightful analysis of China's innovative approach to serving 'ignored markets'. Yes, a careful study of Chinese companies shows how they strategically produce what some might consider lower-quality or "inferior" products. This strategy is not about compromising on quality, but rather about aligning with the purchasing power of their target customers. By doing so, these companies effectively capture significant market value, demonstrating a keen understanding of their customer financial capacity and market dynamics. This approach allows them to meet the needs of a broader audience, thereby maximizing how much value they are able to capture in the market. Additionally, we are learning that innovation can emerge from various aspects of a business from pricing, to marketing to technological innovation. For instance, Chinese companies often leverage pricing innovation. They produce products that align with the purchasing power of their target customers, effectively capturing significant market value by meeting the needs of ignored market segments. This strategy highlights how adjusting price points to match consumer capabilities can be a powerful form of innovation. Also, the lead faculty, Prof. Ndubuisi underscores the importance of marketing innovation. A prime example is Intel's "Intel Inside Label" campaign for Windows-based computers. This marketing strategy not only enhanced Intel's brand visibility but also created a strong association between their chips and reliable computing performance, driving consumer preference for devices using Intel chips and returning alpha for their business & brand.
