The Or Foundation

Non-profit Organizations

A non-profit organisation working at the intersection of environmental justice, education and fashion development.

About us

The Or Foundation (pronounced “or”) works at the intersection of environmental justice, education and fashion development to identify and manifest alternatives to the dominant model of fashion (overproduction, waste colonialism & greenwashing?) to bring forth ecological prosperity, as opposed to destruction and inspire citizens to form a relationship with fashion that extends beyond their role as consumer. ‘The Or’ stands for ‘Choice’. Choice is agency – agency to escape the predominant violent socio-economic system of corporate colonialism and to change it from within. We are a 501(C)(3) public charity in the USA and a registered charity in Ghana that has been operating in both countries since 2011.

#SpeakVolumes is still in full force. We are not slowing down and we want you to come with us. We need to keep calling on fashion brands to disclose their production volumes and we need you to join the #ICanCount #SpeakVolumesChallenge. Count the number of items in your closet & make a video disclosing your number. By leading with transparency you let the brands know that it is not difficult to tell us how many clothes they produce every year. Tag three of your favorite brands to #SpeakVolumes and ask your audience to tag three of their brands in the comments. Don’t forget to sign the petition at speakvolumes.org to have an email sent directly to these brands on your behalf. Together we can make the change we want to see in the fashion industry!

We called on you to demand fashion brands #SpeakVolumes by sharing their annual production numbers and you came through. Throughout the month of September you signed petitions, counted the clothes in your closets and shared our content to lend your voice to this important cause of understanding the magnitude of the fashion industry’s output; a step towards addressing the industry’s waste crisis. So far, 928 of you have nominated a total of 153 brands. While we are busying emailing these companies on tagging them on our socials, we need you to keep up the energy! Continue to tag brands in our comments and call on your network to sign the petition because together, we can motivate the brands towards the right actions.

The Clothing Zombie is on an important mission, but that doesn’t mean the man under the mask can’t have a bit of fun! Enjoy some BTS featuring Jerem Hutchison, the UK-based performance artist behind (and within) the Clothing Zombie. Jeremy is a joy to work with and has brought so much care and levity to the #SpeakVolumes campaign. No matter if there are trousers in his face or diving into a pile of New York City garbage, Jeremy is here to support. In short, be like Jeremy! You TOO can help by filling out the Speak Volumes form here: https://lnkd.in/eJrkm4TK

The making of a Clothing Zombie 🧟♂️ See behind the scenes as artist and ally @jeremyhutchison crafts the zombie utilizing garments sourced from secondhand markets across West Africa. Although Jeremy, who resides in the UK, had to craft a new structure for the zombie on site in NYC, the clothing is the same as what was used during last year’s campaign in London. Jeremy has cared for these garments across multiple continents, taking responsibility for the full lifecycle of the clothing that takes the form of his artwork. And yet, Big Fashion brands have not extended the same level of accountability The business model of overproduction is not a viable model for the future of fashion. It’s time for brands to be transparent about their production numbers. You can be part of the change by filling out the form at this link, where you can nominate fashion brands to join the cause and #SpeakVolumes:: https://lnkd.in/eJrkm4TK

Jasmin Malik Chua’s recent article covers The Clothing Zombie, a provocative creation by performance artist Jeremy Hutchison, seen wandering the streets of Manhattan during New York Fashion Week as part of our Speak Volumes campaign - a call for greater transparency and systemic change in the fashion industry. “If we don’t have adequate data on production volumes from different segments of the industry, it’s very difficult to put forward details around that request in terms of what that policy might actually look like” - Elizabeth (Liz) Ricketts, co-founder of The Or Foundation Learn more about the urgency of addressing overproduction, and join us in calling on brands to #SpeakVolumes: https://lnkd.in/dY7dNCzZ

Overproduction impacts so many people along the value chain and yet Big Fashion brands refuse to publish production volumes, luxury thinks overproduction has nothing to do with them and we have yet to see policies that meaningfully stand in the way of the overproduction  business model. More transparency on production volumes may be only one of many steps required to tackle fasion’s waste crisis but it is certainly the easiest as this is data all brands have. That’s why we are calling on companies of all sizes to join #speakvolumes by publishing their 2023 production numbers before Black Friday 2024. Want to help!? Nominate three brands, of any size by tagging them in the comments below! Original artwork by https://lnkd.in/eYAxKqFX #SpeakVolumes
