Tomorrow (8 Oct) will be the first trading day following the long National Day holiday break. The NDRC is set to hold a presser at 10 a.m. tomorrow, likely addressing easing policies aimed at stimulating private investments, rather than the much expected further fiscal stimulus (?). The FOMO sentiment might persist because: - On-the-ground sentiment remains upbeat according to my observation; - The number of new stock trading accounts has surged (brokers stayed open during the holiday!), with some reporting a 300-400% increase in daily account openings compared to pre-holiday levels. Notably, many new investors are from Gen Z, particularly those born after 2000, who haven’t experienced the market volatility of 2015; - HSI has gained 9.06% since September 30, after falling 5.29% during October 2-3. Holiday Consumption: - According to the Ministry of Transport, overall mobility grew at a low single-digit YoY from October 1-4. However, outbound travel looks more promising. - MeiTuan reported a 41.2% increase in dining-in consumption from October 1-5 in the top five cities. Property Market: Market activity peaked on October 2 (maybe because people had to leave for holiday), with transaction volumes for new and existing homes increasing by 50%-100% compared to September. New homes performed better than second-hand ones, though it remains a buyer’s market. The discount rate on second-hand homes declined from higher to lower single-digit in general, and more sellers withdrew last minute. While the current trend is promising, further improvements are necessary to transform this easily tradable rally into a sustained bull market. The authorities timed the new stimulus well, coming after what I observed to be the most pessimistic investor sentiment in 12 years during my 150+ hours of roadshows in China this summer. Investors (local and foreign), who were too underweight on China, are now experiencing FOMO. It’s likely the rally will continue for now. Looking ahead, more needs to be done. The size of the stimulus remains far smaller than in 2008 or 2015-16, while the economy is more overleveraged, and money velocity is at an all-time low. Fixing balance sheets is critical, and we’ll likely see more fiscal stimulus and bank recapitalization ahead. As Freya Beamish aptly put it, “You can’t orchestrate a ‘whatever it takes’ moment and then back down immediately.”
