‼️Value alert ‼️ Recently, we held an awesome conference about Soft Skills in interviews for Russian-speaking folks. In the current market, soft skills are a must-have addition to your core competencies. 💪 Offering and negotiating are some of the most desirable and challenging parts of the process. Veronika was crazy enough to create an entire gamification of the process, demonstrating how you can approach negotiations and what traps may lie there. Freelancer for 3 weeks... after 3 weeks, still no project... am I doing something wrong? 😤 ⁉ As a freelancer in the QA field, I took the plunge into the world of self-employment without having a first project lined up. Some might say it's too risky... Some might say... it should be easy. So, what have I accomplished in the first three weeks? 🔎 Alongside the administrative tasks and insurances that every freelancer should have, customer acquisition has naturally been a crucial part of daily work. Currently, more than 50% of my time is spent on finding and reviewing projects, as well as applying for them, and engaging in initial conversations and email correspondence for inquiries and meetings. 💡 25% of my time is currently dedicated to further education and continuous learning. This includes attending Freelance Unlocked, which has been very helpful for a freelancer just starting out, providing valuable information. We had a discussion with Maks Kaplunov, our head of the iOS and Android teams about common mistakes developers make when building iOS apps and gathered valuable information: tips on how to prevent and fix them!🔥🔥🔥 📌Save this for future reference! 1. Ignoring Error Handling    - Mistake: Many developers ignore errors or use `try!`, which can lead to unexpected app crashes.    - Tip: Always handle errors with `do-catch`, and when necessary, inform the user about the issue to ensure the app remains stable. 2. Memory Leaks    - Mistake: Incorrect use of closures or strong references can cause memory leaks and degrade performance.    - Tip: Use weak or unowned references where needed, and test the app with tools like Xcode Instruments (Leaks, Allocations, Zombies). 3. Improper Multithreading Management    - Mistake: Poor organization of multithreading, performing heavy operations, and network requests on the main thread can cause the interface to freeze or lock up.    - Tip: Delegate heavy tasks to a background thread, ensuring that UI updates occur on the main thread. Review different approaches to multithreading, such as GCD, Operation Queue, and async/await, as they each have advantages and should be used appropriately. 4. Unoptimized Resources and Assets    - Mistake: Using unoptimized images and resources can increase the app size and slow down loading times.    - Tip: Optimize images using formats like HEIF/HEVC, and use tools like ImageOptim to compress files without quality loss or opt for SVG formats. I work at Mirro, of course we send product updates to our users. We don’t do it in blind though - we work in a CI/CD model and, as such, it would be impossible to get ALL news out as soon as they happen, because we stick to some simple rules: - We always match content with audience - admin tools for admins, general product updates for everyone. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be - Being honest: we like to keep people informed about scheduled maintenance or interventions, so that our users know we’re up to something if the product behaves differently - Keeping it real - no NL without a .gif or a funny quote - there’s humans at Mirro.io who do the work. And sometimes we’re proud, other times we're fun, sometimes we’re scared and other times we’re downright relieved. And we show it.

What is more important: skills or experience?   Recently I’ve received interesting feedback about interview with me: I do not have not enough experience with TypeScript and microservices. What is interesting in that feedback? That it was not a technical interview how I understand it, but amusing story about my experience in different areas, TypeScript and microservices are among them. There were no coding tasks, to check if I can use TS on practice for example. No system design part, to understand if I know how backend applications are designed. Seems like if I had used more smart words about TS and microservices I would have had a better mark.   When I was analyzing that feedback, I’ve come to this thought: what is more important for any specialist, skills or experience? As, well, my skills were not checked. That does not seem to be right in my opinion, as I define skills as fundamental knowledge and abilities to work in some area. The specialist’s capability to learn something new based on that knowledge, to solve new challenging tasks, to grow professionally and, finally, to get new experience.   And what is experience? That is a knowledge of how to apply skills in different situations to resolve issues and solve tasks. Experience helps to speed up your work when you have done that already. And experience can help to grow further, as based on already passed steps you start to work on resolution the new stuff.   But more intriguing question here: can experience exist without skills? I wonder how? If you do not know that basic things, if you are not capable to solve tasks in particular area – how you can get the experience?   So, skills come first. I even had an experience (ha-ha) in my practice with one junior developer. He literally just graduated and has been working for a about half a year. His code was not so good, mainly lacking of best practices and usage of advanced framework features. He had no experience. But he learned fast, really fast. He absorbed new knowledge and explanations of senior colleagues like a sponge. In couple of months, he performed on their level. As a result, he got a senior title in 1.5 years. Was it possible without programming skills? I really doubt.   Is it acceptable to judge about specialist’s skills based on the story about his experience? Yes, why not? Will that judgement be relevant? I think not a lot. You can get very surface understanding about the skills in that case. Of course that is a resentment telling in me, but still. 👨‍🔬 Case: QA for a gaming startup, or 450 applications to the perfect candidate 🎯 Task: Find a QA with deep knowledge in the field: the first tester in the studio who needed to set up processes and create documentation - all in a remote environment. Recruiter's dream is to close the vacancy using only applications, but like any treasure, it’s important to know how to process it 🎇 🔥 3 Steps to success: 💫 Application funnel: Instead of cold sourcing, we focused on posts in Telegram channels and LinkedIn publications. We made the job posting as bright and attractive as possible. We listed only top requirements, targeted the right audience and location, used AI tools for image generation, and included reference publications (having a pool of references is useful as it increases visual literacy). 💫 Organizing processing: On the first day, we received 196 applications! A dream? Yes, but only if you know how to manage them, so I prepared in advance. To avoid confusion, respond to everyone, and prevent backlash from candidates🙂, we created a basic Google form with questions and added it to the posts: location, English level, experience in game development, possible start date, etc. This simple trick allowed us to speed up and process 35 applications per hour🤟 We also optimized the process by preparing initial emails with a detailed job description and a template rejection email for those who didn't meet the requirements. A template is not the same response for everyone; it’s an initial draft that we customize with a constructive reply for each candidate. For such vacancies, the more templates, the more effective the contacting. We also collect candidates' resumes for future communication because everyone grows in experience! 💫 Selling the project: In game development, the project is everything! Therefore, it’s crucial to tell the candidate about it in detail: the project's stage, the team working on it, the release date, the idea's origin, the number of downloads, where the game is presented, and development plans. 📌 Tip: download the game, watch the trailer, find out if there’s a player community on Discord, check the Steam ratings, and note what players highlight as positives. Try to get inspired by the project yourself, and then you can inspire others! 🔝 Result: 450 applications and the vacancy was closed with a Senior QA candidate with 5 years of game development experience! A large number of applications is not a problem but an opportunity. Proper organization of work with them and an inspiring project presentation will help find the perfect candidate!

Hello my LinkedIn network, it’s been a while 😁 Last week I had a blast presenting at Tesonet “It’s Not a Bug, It’s a QA festival” a new topic about cooperation and what we can learn from Game Theory about it. TL;DR; version bellow ⏬ A few words about the event first - it was really good. From the topics and venue to the organization, speakers, and networking opportunities, everything was outstanding👏 I hope many of the talks will be shared and made available at future public events 🤞 Kudos to the speakers, Michael Bolton making a distinction between shallow testing and deep testing, thats the one I lacked 👏 Lina Zubyte for questioning ROI and user value behind some bugs. Justas Laužadis for deep dive into “gap” and emphasizing the importance of the culture in QA processes. Gintarė P. for giving away core principles of how to “farm” mobile devices for automation. Erikas Čeponis for making automation observability look child’s play. 🤖 Dov Zavadskis 🤖 for creating AI tester on stage and proving that it will not take our job… or will it 🤔 A TL;DR; version of my topic: we are all selfish—yes, you read that correctly. If you’ve ever asked yourself, 'What will I gain from doing this?' you’re operating from a place of self-interest. The cooperation challenge becomes apparent when you try to imagine how selfish individuals could work together as a team. Your ability to collaborate would improve significantly if you abandoned the need to constantly be better than others. Only then can you truly become a strong team player and eventually be surrounded by like-minded individuals. This helping and supportive group could create far more value for a community, organization, or individuals. In the long run, this approach will yield far greater success than focusing solely on outperforming others ✌️
