Répondre à la violence par la violence ? Je suis encore sous le choc après l’acte de vandalisme perpétré contre Broken Chair, notre sculpture emblématique située sur la Place des Nations ce à Genève ce vendredi. Ce monument, restauré à grands efforts cet été (encore merci à tous les corps de métiers impliqués), est bien plus qu’une œuvre d’art : il incarne le cri silencieux mais puissant des victimes de mines antipersonnel et autres armes explosives. Créée en 1997 par l’artiste Daniel Berset, à l’initiative de Handicap International Suisse - Schweiz, Broken Chair rappelle aux Etats et aux organisations internationales l’urgence de protéger les civils face aux violences armées. Malgré les dommages subis ce vendredi, le message de Broken Chair reste intact : réfléchir à notre responsabilité collective face à l’inacceptable et à agir en faveur d’un monde plus sûr pour les populations vulnérables. Martin Luther King disait: Rendre coup pour coup, c'est propager la violence, rendre plus sombre encore une nuit déjà sans étoiles. Or les ténèbres ne peuvent se dissiper par elles-mêmes. C'est la lumière qui les chasse. Mon organisation a donc choisi d'agir et de témoigner. Jour après jour depuis plus de 40 ans, nous venons en aide aux personnes handicapées dans plus de 60 pays. Avec mon équipe, nous prendrons toutes les mesures nécessaires pour restaurer à nouveau Broken Chair et préserver son rôle de porte-parole des victimes des conflits armés à travers le monde. Over the next two weeks, we will revisit the main findings from the Landmine Monitor 2024 report and give a quick rundown of the Mine Ban Treaty’s impact over the past 25 years. We will emphasize all the progress we’ve made since it came into effect in 1999, up until November 2024. Starting with Universalization, we will showcase how 25 years of progress under the Mine Ban Treaty have transformed the world today. As you will be able to see, it has been an incredible journey since 1999. Back then (March 1, 1999): - 47 countries had signed on to the ban on landmines. - 150 countries were still not part of the Treaty. Now (November 2024): - 164 countries have joined the global ban on landmines. - Only 33 countries are still not part of the Treaty. This progress shows how well the treaty has been working towards making the word a safer place, particularly for civilians and children. With 33 countries who have yet to join the MBT, we’re getting closer and closer to achieving our goal of a world free of landmines.

"What have 14 months of attempted humanitarian advocacy and diplomacy meaningfully achieved? We don’t have to wait for the charge of genocide, “the crime of crimes”, to be legally established (this will take years and be too little and too late for those dying today) to condemn Israel’s actions. The evidence that Israel is committing generational war crimes in Gaza is overwhelming: the percentage of population and territory affected; the number of dead, wounded, and orphaned civilians; the lack of ability to escape; Israel’s total control over every facet of life in the enclave; the psychological impact of being forced to live in enforced deprivation for so long; the brazen enablement of all of this by some of the most powerful countries in the world." And the targeting of humanitarian workers. HI already mourns the death of 3 colleagues and their family in Gaza: Sabreen and her 3 childs, Muna and all her family, Nala and her 4 children. For 14 months, HI has tirelessly denounced the way in which civilians suffer as a result of military action, with loss of life and the destruction of homes, hospitals, schools and essential infrastructure. This must stop. HI continues to call for a permanent and immediate ceasefire. Every minute without a ceasefire prolongs the unnecessary suffering of the people of Gaza and makes the need to end the trauma of war more urgent.

From 25 to 29 November, a delegation from Handicap International - Humanity & Inclusion attended the Siem Reap Conference for a mine-free world, participating in important panels and side events.    The Conference was an important platform to reaffirm the urgent need to ban any use of such indiscriminate weapons, by any actor and under any circumstances!    The transfer of antipersonnel mines from the U.S. to Ukraine, a State Party to the Mine Ban Treaty, was a major point of discussion during the plenary sessions on compliance.   👉 🚫 Civil society members, including survivors, firmly opposed any attempt to allow exceptions for landmine use.  #MineFreeWorld   Read more about the role that civil society played at the Conference, the successes of and challenges faced by the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention :   ➡️https://lnkd.in/enafAass 

Today is Universal health coverage day (#UHC). UHC  encompasses the entire spectrum of care, including health promotion, prevention, treatment, #rehabilitation, and palliative care. Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in achieving UHC. This is because rehabilitation is the health strategy to optimize #functioning in people who live with health conditions and experience disability. Without increased investment in accessible and affordable rehabilitation services, UHC will remain out of reach for too many people. Globally, rehabilitation services are often costly and excluded from health insurance plans. Barriers like high travel and accommodation costs—due to the concentration of services in urban areas—further limit access. Today on #UHCDay, we call on policymakers to allocate resources for quality rehabilitation services at all levels of the healthcare system, particularly within primary healthcare (#PHC). Expanding coverage of rehabilitation services through financial protection mechanisms is essential to achieving hashtag #HealthForAll. #UHC demands bold action, investment, and commitment to ensure everyone can access the health services they need. #ManyVoicesOneMessage #WorldRehabilitationAlliance #rehab2030

A striking percentage of the population lives in poverty.
