#OurWorldInCharts This year's Olympics is the first where gender parity has been achieved – 124 years after women were first allowed to compete. Although the average Olympic team is evenly split between men and women, Africa has the lowest representation of women of all the continents, with women comprising only 44% of the average team. There are, however, notable exceptions. Countries such as Angola, Cameroon, Lesotho, Malawi, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone and Zambia are sending teams where women make up two-thirds of the athletes. Guinea-Bissau and Somalia will have no female competitors in Paris. There was a spike in female participation at the Games in 1928, when women could compete in athletics and gymnastics. Since 1991, the Olympic Committee mandated that all new codes that apply for recognition must have female competitors. 👉 South Africa's road to the Paris2024 – Full story + 7 charts here: https://lnkd.in/dRHPeM-K #Paris2024 #Olympics #GenderParity #WomenInSports #Africa #FemaleAthletes #EqualityInSports #OlympicHistory #DiversityAndInclusion #SportsRepresentation #DataViz #DataInsights #OurWorldInCharts #OWIC #TheOutlier

Happy to report that our study on #cricket and its impact on #immigrant #socialinclusion in #NorthernOntario communities is now available via Canadian Ethnics Studies as a part of Project MUSE. The study was led by an amazing colleague whom I have a privilege to call a friend, Natalya Brown, and in a team with Ankur Shahi. Amazing #teamwork! #publications A brief summary: In the Northern Ontario communities of North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Timmins, immigrants have organized and run cricket clubs. Using a social inclusion framework, we surveyed players and conducted interviews with players and sponsors to ascertain their perspectives on the impact of cricket on newcomer social inclusion. We find evidence that participation in cricket increases newcomers' sense of social inclusion and social capital, with sponsorship playing a moderating role. Institutional support and the ability to secure sponsorship are limited by the low profile of the sport in Northern Ontario. As teams balance increasing competitiveness with inclusiveness, cricket has the potential to provide opportunities for interculturalism, mutual learning, and cross-cultural understanding.

Are Uganda Premier League clubs genuinely committed to developing women's teams, or just complying with new Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) #CAF regulations? Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) now requires clubs in continental competitions to have or support a women’s side. This mandate aims to elevate women's football, but many clubs face challenges with resources and logistics. Is it a step toward equality or a burden? Read more on the evolving landscape of women's football and what it means for Ugandan clubs. #WomensFootball #CAF #EqualityInSport

In a cricket loving nation, Nepal, the interest and passion seen in women’s football following similar passion seen during recently concluded women’s volleyball are indicating something bigger. It’s not just a trend to pass by, it shows a larger picture that quality matters. While even western countries are having this debate regarding gender in sports, Nepalese audience seemed to have neutralized this debate of gender in sports. Credit must go to the women players, their dedication and passion they have shown. Similar acceptance needs to be developed in other fields as well and that is possible only when women themselves start showing passion and interest to challenge the odds. Others can contribute in this journey as well. The impact in sports is such that we have almost forgot that Nepal men’s team is playing a cricket series as well. #genderequality #sports #unity #Feminism2024 #saffwomenschampionship #sambha #change

From Humble Beginnings to Global Icons: The Critical Role of Access and Support in Soccer The path from poverty to soccer stardom illuminates the power of opportunity and support. Cristiano Ronaldo, from Madeira, almost chose work over soccer until his mother intervened, highlighting the influence of family in nurturing talent. In Senegal, Sadio Mané's pursuit of soccer against his family's wishes underscores the importance of personal determination. Diego Maradona and Pelé, hailing from impoverished backgrounds in Argentina and Brazil, rose to legendary status, demonstrating that talent knows no economic bounds. Ángel Di María and Zlatan Ibrahimović's stories reiterate the necessity of community support for aspiring athletes from challenging environments. Accessible soccer programs are crucial in offering talented youths from all socioeconomic statuses the opportunity to shine. These initiatives ensure that the beautiful game is truly inclusive, providing a pathway out of poverty and into the global spotlight. Trent Alexander-Arnold's advocacy work off the pitch, addressing youth poverty, alongside Mané's contributions to his community, exemplify how soccer stars can inspire and enact change. Can you imagine the soccer world without these icons? Their stories are a compelling call to action: to support accessible soccer programs that can unlock the potential of every child with a dream. Ensuring soccer is accessible to all is not just about nurturing future talent; it's about changing lives, one goal at a time. #soccer #mls #mlsnext #premierleague #soccerislife #soccerlife #dogood #givingback #underprivilegedchildren #underprivileged
