🙏 A huge thank you to all the attendees and speakers who joined us for the National University of Vanuatu's (NUV) seminar on Thursday 14 November, at the NUV Auditorium! 🗣 Led by Sebastian Antoine Salay, a Research Fellow from the University of Melbourne, the seminar, "Overlapping Land Tenure Stories: Negotiating Ambiguity in Port Vila," provided a thought-provoking exploration into the complexities of land rights and their social impacts in our city. We appreciated the vibrant discussions, the shared insights, and the deep questions raised on how overlapping land tenure affects communities. Your engagement made the event unique! The evening concluded with kava and refreshments, allowing for further networking and discussion in a relaxed atmosphere. This seminar was organised with the support of AUF and Fonds Pacifique. Thanks again to everyone who helped make this event a success and stay tuned for more events like this at NUV! 🌟 Sharing the story of a citizen science project in Groningen (the Netherlands)! Researchers Nikki Jepkema and Berry van Holland share their story of a citizen science project to enhance the physical activity in a specific neighbourhood in the city of Groningen.🚶♂️🚶♀️ ‘’Our challenge was to motivate residents to get off the couch, and in collaboration with local residents and local authorities we've created two unique routes: a sports route and an art route weaving through the neighbourhood. The journey began with the question: How can we enhance community engagement with our neighbourhood and increase physical activity? We used a citizen science approach to actively involve local residents in the project. Residents became co-researchers, sharing their insights and ideas. Despite challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic, we connected through innovative methods, walking kilometres together (at a safe distance!) and using technology to gather valuable feedback. The result? A community-driven initiative where residents took the lead in designing the routes, identifying themes like green spaces, sports facilities, and local art. It's inspiring to see neighbours taking pride in their surroundings, like the dedicated resident who crafted our beautiful art route. Recently, we celebrated the official opening of these routes, a testament to what can be achieved when communities, experts, and policymakers unite. Moving forward, we look forward to organizing guided walks and continuing to foster an active, vibrant neighbourhood. Let's keep walking towards a healthier, more connected community together.’’ 🌍💪 #CitizenScience #CommunityEngagement #Neighbourhood #Groningen #Vinkhuizen #Hanze

Happy to have participated in the expedition week held in Toulouse with 30 students from 12 European universities participating in the ENGAGE.EU alliance on social engagement. During this week we worked on the implementation of a citizen participation project concerning the management of the tree heritage of the city of Toulouse. While urban trees offer numerous benefits, their management faces significant challenges, particularly due to the constraints of the urban environment. Urban areas are often characterized by dense infrastructure and limited green spaces, making it difficult to find suitable locations for tree planting and ensuring that these trees have enough room to grow and develop properly. This spatial constraint frequently results in trees being placed in areas where they are more likely to suffer from restricted root growth and physical damage from nearby buildings and pavement. This is how CITREE was born, the idea of a platform able to connect private companies and individual citizens united in adopting trees in their neighborhoods through a system of incentives and quality check maintenance. #trees #heatwaves #greenspaces #urbanpolicy #cities #climatechange

Our collaborative research with the City of Sydney, initially part of a project informing the city's walking strategy development, has now been published in the Journal of Transport and Land Use. Congratulations to Fatemeh Nourmohammadi, Zahra Nourmohammadi, and Tanapon Lilasathapornkit for their dedication to this project. While our initial project wrapped up in 2022, we continued to track #pedestrian activity into 2023 and early 2024. Our findings show pedestrian activity has rebounded, increasing by 51% in 2023 compared to the lowest levels recorded in 2020. However, the weekly average daily pedestrian count across Sydney is still 11% lower than the 2019 baseline. While the impact of the pandemic on active mobility patterns is widely studied in the literature, the underlying characteristics that describe the heterogeneity in changes in #activemobility are less understood. Our latest study, "Association between land use features and changes in walking patterns from pre–pandemic to post–pandemic," explores the evolving relationship between urban land use and pedestrian dynamics over the last decade (2013-2023) in #Sydney. 📚 JTLU paper: https://lnkd.in/gMUq2xgi 📚 City of Sydney - A City for Walking: https://lnkd.in/guG3UMsG UNSW Civil and Environmental Engineering UNSW Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation
New in JTLU: “Association between land use features and changes in walking patterns from pre–pandemic to post–pandemic” by Fatemeh Nourmohammadi, Zahra Nourmohammadi, Tanapon Lilasathapornkit & Meead Saberi of the University of New South Wales. https://lnkd.in/g8cEqYKe This study investigated the association between urban population and land-use features, as well as changes in walking patterns, from pre-pandemic to post-pandemic, through a case study of the city of Sydney, Australia.
