🔥 Luca Bertuzzi from MLex reports that France is pushing for “infrastructure cost-sharing talks” (aka network fees / fair share) between Big Tech and telcos. Those who thought that the departure of Thierry Breton as the EU’s digital czar meant that the network fees debate would be put to rest clearly neglected those Member States, like France, backing this ask from their incumbent telco. ❓ The 🔥hot question 🔥 will be whether Commissioner-designate Henna Virkkunen falls for the incumbent telcos’ rhetoric or will be brave enough to bury this debate once and for all. 🗣️ The consultation results during the previous EC term sent a clear message: the majority of stakeholders say NO to intervening in the IP interconnection market and NO to network fees / fair share. 💡 One of the key takeaways coming from the forward-thinking visionaries who contributed to our Telecom Time Capsules is the need to: 🔸preserve net neutrality to provide a level playing field and empower European startups to compete globally; and, 🔸avoid outdated regulatory solutions that can stifle innovation and increase unnecessary costs (e.g. “fair share” proposals), including network fees, which could hinder the growth of small businesses and innovation. Great write up from TelecomTV about how Orange has provided connectivity at the #parisolympics in 2024, including discussion of how Private Networks have played a key role. One really interesting point from Bertrand ROJAT, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Orange Events was a recommendation in the future to use more Wi-Fi and mobile rather than wired networks. He explained that with fixed networks, one of the biggest challenges facing the French telco is the deinstallation of the cables in a way that allows the assets to be re-used and deployed in its day-to-day production network. This is a concept we at Shared Access have been hearing a lot from businesses and landlords about being more flexible for the future to allow for change – a key point in any walk of life. The Sustainability Committee of the #FTTH Council Europe officially presented a new strategic industry asset during the FTTH Conference 2024 in Berlin: the whitepaper "FTTH Council Carbon footprint project: a reporting model for the entire sector". The asset describes an operational model and how the FTTH sector can jointly use this platform to respond to the ambitions and agreements towards #decarbonization and Net-Zero, and the increasing regulations on ESG reporting, such as the Corporate #Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The FTTH Carbon Footprint Platform by the FTTH Council Europe will be available as of Q2 2024 and aims at ensuring that companies can use the same standardized methodology and enhance the quality of sustainability information available to investors and partners throughout the chain, as demanded by legislation and guidelines such as the #CSRD. Another reason #euro2024 should be a fun watch – 5G will be involved! Broadcaster RTL Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom are working together to use 5G services via a private 5G network to deliver “data-intensive applications” with the network running in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and offering up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster. #Telecom European bandwidth infrastructure company euNetworks has unveiled its latest high-capacity fiber network between Frankfurt and Paris, a new euNetworks Super Highway that offers a shorter and more direct fiber route to meet the increasing bandwidth demands between two of Europes major data and cloud service hubs. Our latest Super Highway adds another important route to what is a platform of foundational critical infrastructure for Europes future, said Kevin Dean, Interim CEO of euNetworks.This announcement follows the launch earlier this month of a similar fiber network route from Amsterdam to Frankfurt, further expanding euNetworks high-performance network infrastructure across the region. This development reflects euNetworks strategic commitment to delivering advanced bandwidth solutions designed to support both present and future technology and customer demands in Europe. Dubbed a Super Highway, this new Frankfurt-to-Paris fiber route integrates into euNetworks' FLAP-D network, which connects all major data centers in Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin. This fiber network is a new, purpose-built fiber infrastructure currently serving these critical European markets, and it is uniquely equipped to support the high-bandwidth needs of data centers and cloud service providers with optimal speed, efficiency, and resilience. The euNetworks Frankfurt-to-Paris Super Highway was specifically engineered to address growing demands for bandwidth between these two major markets. The network route integrates into euNetworks existing metro networks in both Frankfurt and Paris, allowing direct connections to over 100 key data centers within those cities and offering extended reach to an additional 445 data centers across Europe through euNetworks' extensive long-haul and metro footprint. This network route would offer increased diversity, high-performance fiber, and is part of euNetworks ongoing carbon-reduction initiatives across its infrastructure. Low Latency, Network Performance The Frankfurt-to-Paris fiber network incorporates several features aimed at boosting performance and sustainability: * Optimized Shorter Route - The Super Highway would provide a shorter path, reducing latency - a critical factor for high-speed data transport. Orange is transforming its 5G private network by expanding its 5G standalone network to improve flexibility and efficiency for customers 📶 At a recent press event, the French telco group’s CTIO and CTO highlighted Orange’s shift to an API-based platform approach, offering customizable solutions.
