🔦 This enlightening investigation into what remains for me a very exciting project, and one of the most ambitious I have seen in terms of circularity in a highly criticized and very complex sector: fashion and footwear. What we learn here is that creating a global circular loop, which remains 👟 environmentally friendly, 👟 socially just, 👟 logistically realistic, 👟 affordable in terms of price and value for the consumer, 😵 is extremely difficult to achieve ! And nobody cracked it yet except a couple of brands who were built circular by design like #Patagonia, but are they finally really fully circular without a proper take back scheme ? With far more demand than supply, Hermès #Birkin bags flip economics on its head by having a resale value of ~2x the original sales price. Of course, that’s only if you can get one. I am reminded of a famous French song many years ago called “Capri, c’est fini”. The FTC decision also fuels the eternal debate on the core value of a luxury brand: is luxury linked to rarity or to authenticity? Interestingly, the FTC’s bid is based on a narrow definition of a marketing subset of the luxury market, saying that Tapestry and Capri compete in the “accessible luxury” market space. 👟 Zendaya x On: The New Cool Collab Swiss footwear brand On has been growing and challenging bigger footwear brands, especially in the running shoe and lifestyle shoe categories. Their latest announcement is a partnership with Zendaya, the young actress who is quickly becoming a cultural icon. This multi-year brand partnership between Zendaya and On includes her being featured in marketing campaigns and reimagining different product lines. The announcements so far do not describe the creation of any Zendaya specific products, like her own shoe. Zendaya best reaches young, cosmopolitan audiences sitting across cultural industries like film, music, and fashion. A lot of On's growth has been amongst young urban professionals, a demographic group who is very likely to admire Zendaya and follow her on social media. Recent On collabs include the luxury fashion brand Loewe and the singer FKA Twigs, which respectively reach more wealthy and indie/artsy audiences. What Zendaya wears is highly watched across a more mainstream audience, which likely makes this On's single biggest brand partner in terms of broad reach. As part of Young Hollywood's A-List, Zendaya surely received offers from the major sneaker brands like Nike and Adidas. Her decision to partner with On indicates the powerful cache that the brand is building and could inspire others to work with On as well. It's a good starting point for the collaboration but what comes next is just as important. While On has made a splash with the Zendaya announcement, how they actually work together moving forward will help determine whether or not she can actually contribute to On's growing momentum. Dear friends, peers and colleagues.   After three amazing decades in #luxuryretail at #poloralphlauren #hugoboss and #giorgioarmani working with the most beautiful product, in gorgeous work environments and with incredibly talented people, I have come to learn of an ugly, insidious evil that I cannot turn away from. #humantrafficking is now the largest global criminal enterprise and has so many far-reaching tentacles such as #sextrafficking #childsexualabusematerial #illicitmassage #sextortion to name a few.   90% of women who are trafficked were sexually abused in their youth 42% of the women are trafficked by a family member 80% of women will return to their trafficker if they don’t have a safe place to go   I am now involved with Onehope Refuge, a nonprofit safe home for women escaping sex trafficking with their children. On any given day, survivors are involved in trauma-informed counseling, continuing education opportunities, life-skills training, and/or faith-based devotions. Research shows it takes a minimum of two years to stabilize, restore and recover from the severe and complex PTSD experienced by sexually victimized women. Onehope’s holistic care model was designed with this data in mind. Simply put, we are in it for the long-haul. The stories of #healing, #growth and #love are truly extraordinary, and the children playing, going to school and being tutored give us all hope for a better future.  Recently, Onehope Refuge kicked off our first-ever year-end defendHERs giving campaign. 🇪🇺 Ultra-fast fashion player Shein is expanding its pre-loved platform "Exchange" to Europe 👇 Starting this week, French consumers are able to buy and (re)sell second-hand SHEIN items on the platform - at even lower prices than usual (from 3 USD onwards). 🇩🇪 🇬🇧 Shein Exchange will later move into Germany and the UK. The Chinese e-commerce giant is hoping for as much success as in the United States where it's been active since October 2022, attracting +4 million users last year. ♻️ The company claims it has more than 115,000 second-hand items for sale from more than 95,000 resellers. Exchange is part of the main Shein app, which allows customers to automatically see previous purchases and start reselling any purchased item with the touch of 1 button. 🤔 The move of Shein, not particularly perceived as a sustainable fashion player, to launch a second life service for its products is quite surprising - but makes sense. Peer-to-peer marketplaces like Vinted are gaining traction when it comes to reselling secondhand apparel, and Shein clearly wants to own this part of the chain too. 🚀 And customers expect it as well. In recent studies, customers across the globe expressed a strong desire to integrate circular practices into their daily lives, with clothing donations and peer-to-peer sales being on top of the wishlists.
