“I had the opportunity to be coached by Matthias in the very beginning of my journey as an entrepreneur. What struck me most was his ability to break very complex problems down into small parts and hypotheses, and how he sometimes gave the impression -or maybe it wasn’t an impression - of understanding one’s business better than oneself. He is also a good listener, with much empathy, and shows genuine interest in your project, visions and ideas. As far as startup acceleration is concerned, I can tell you the guy knows what he’s talking about !”

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law to maintain constitutional order amid perceived threats from North Korea. This prompted immediate backlash from the National Assembly, where lawmakers demanded the revocation of the order. The resolution to nullify martial law was swiftly passed with 190 votes, leading to protests outside the parliament. Following the resolution, National Assembly Chairman urged the withdrawal of soldiers from the premises. The ruling People Power Party's leader regretted the circumstances, asserting that military power was now illegal. However, the Defense Ministry confirmed that martial law would remain until Yoon formally lifted it, despite ongoing tensions with an opposition-controlled parliament. During his address, Yoon criticized opposition parties for alleged ties to North Korea and declared martial law necessary to counter threats. Martial Law Commander Gen. Park Ahn-soo implemented strict bans on political activities and gatherings. This was the first martial law declaration in South Korea since 1980, yet there were no military sightings in Seoul after the announcement. The situation impacted financial markets, with the Korean won weakening against the U.S. dollar. In reaction, the Democratic Party leader cautioned that martial law could lead to "collapse irretrievably." Tensions between the ruling and opposition parties have intensified over budgetary disputes and calls for impeachment of senior officials, contributing to Yoon's declining approval ratings. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #SouthKorea Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, warned South Korea of a "dear price" following the recent distribution of propaganda leaflets across the border, labeling them as "dirty things" and "political agitation leaflets." Condemning these actions as provocations, she highlighted North Korea's dwindling patience and noted that security forces are already working to block and destroy the leaflets. Kim expressed that anger within the North has reached a boiling point and asserted that those responsible would face serious repercussions. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #SouthKorea Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. Image Source : AP Kim Jong-Un Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has urged military scientists to overcome the failure of the satellite launch and develop its reconnaissance capabilities in space. The country’s media gave information about this on Wednesday. Kim has described the satellite project as very important in countering US and South Korean military activities. This launch of North Korea has failed at a time when the leaders of South Korea, China and Japan have met in Seoul under the first trilateral meeting in more than four years. <!-- /8323530/Khabar_Desktop_VDO_1X1 --> North Korea’s mission had failed North Korea’s satellite launch mission failed on Monday. The rocket carrying North Korea’s second military reconnaissance satellite exploded shortly after launch, after which Kim visited the country’s Defense Science Academy. According to North Korea’s Aerospace Technology Administration, the explosion was probably caused by a newly developed rocket engine. Liquid oxygen and petroleum were used as fuel in this rocket. The failure of this launch has dealt a severe blow to Kim’s plan to launch three more military spy satellites this year. North Korea had put the first military spy satellite in orbit in November last year. North Korea furious at South Korea Before North Korea’s satellite launch mission, South Korea had conducted exercises with 20 fighter jets near the inter-Korean border. After this, Kim Jong Un had also warned of ‘strong’ action against this move of South Korea in a speech on Tuesday. According to the news of North Korea’s official news agency ‘Korean Central News Agency’, Kim had described this exercise of South Korea as ‘frenzy’ and a ‘dangerous provocation that cannot be ignored’. China's Ministry of National Defence has announced that the PLA's Western Theater Command will send troops to Pakistan to take part in a joint anti-terrorism exercise known as "Warrior-VIII," to be held between late November and mid-December. The exercise will focus on collaborative counter-terrorism strategies, strike maneuvers, and live combat simulations. It will feature multi-tier and mixed training in many specialties to boost real-world operational readiness for both nations. This is the eighth joint exercise in the "Warrior" series that started in 2004. The last such drill took place in 2019, thereby proving that both China and Pakistan have had an unbroken long-term military relationship. According to the Ministry of National Defence, this year's drills mark the intent to pursue strong bilateral military cooperation and enhance joint counter-terrorism capabilities. . . . #ChinaPakistan #WarriorVIII #CounterTerrorism #PLA #PakistanArmy #MilitaryCooperation #JointExercises #AntiTerrorism #ChinaPakistanRelations #DefensePartnership #MilitaryTraining #OperationalReadiness #CombatSimulation #BilateralTies #RegionalSecurity #Tribunetrends

#China / #Missile / #Pacific - China test-fires missile into ‘high seas’ of Pacific - from Voice of America: China test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile with a dummy warhead into “the high seas of the Pacific Ocean,” the country’s Ministry of National Defense reported Wednesday. “The missile fell into expected sea areas,” the ministry stated in a news release posted to its website. “This test launch is a routine arrangement in our annual training plan. It is in line with international law and international practice and is not directed against any country or target.” China "informed the countries concerned in advance," according to a separate Xinhua news agency report, which did not specify the missile’s path or where it landed in the Pacific. The launch "effectively tested the performance of weapons and equipment and the training level of the troops, and achieved the expected goal," Xinhua reported. In 1980, China launched an ICBM into the South Pacific, the Associated Press reported, noting that a map published in Chinese newspapers at the time showed the target area as roughly a circle in the center of a ring formed by the Solomon Islands, Nauru, the Gilbert Islands, Tuvalu, Samoa, Fiji and the New Hebrides. An analyst told Agence France-Presse that China has typically conducted such tests in its own airspace. "This is extremely unusual and likely the first time in decades that we've seen a test like this," Ankit Panda, Stanton Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said. The test "likely speaks to China’s ongoing nuclear modernization manifesting in new requirements for testing," he added. Taiwan's defense ministry said on Wednesday it had detected 23 Chinese military aircraft operating around Taiwan, and also recently detected "intensive" Chinese missile firing and other drills. Taiwan has dispatched its own air and naval forces to keep watch, the ministry said. https://lnkd.in/ec8gPHi9

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun stated at the 21st Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that people in the Asia-Pacific reject attempts to turn their countries into vassal states or involve them in bloc confrontations. Dong emphasized the desire to live in an equal and orderly multipolar world, where countries in the region can resolve issues independently. He also addressed the South China Sea issue, criticizing a country for breaking agreements, making provocations, and endangering regional security by allowing the deployment of a midrange missile system. Dong urged the country to return to dialogue and cooperation for peace in the region. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #China Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gU9Uxb4s

Australia: The ‘criminal price tag’ for the navy’s new warships is $4b a pop. Australia’s new fleet of anti-submarine frigates will cost almost $4 billion each, even before weapons and other key systems are fitted, making them the navy’s most expensive warship. Freshly published tender documents have finally shed light on the individual cost of each of the Hunter-class frigates after months of the Albanese government and Defence officials ducking questions over the revised budget for the controversial project. The hefty price tag comes despite the government slashing the number of ships it will buy by a third after the budget for the project had blown out to almost $66 billion for nine frigates and other associated costs such as training and construction of new wharves. The Hunter-class frigate’s designer and builder, British defence giant BAE Systems, was this month handed a contract increase worth $11.15 billion, equivalent to $3.7 billion per ship. Its total contract is now valued at $14.6 billion, covering the period 2019 to 2035, which also takes in construction of the shipyard. “Under this contract with BAE Australians will get three bare-metal ship hulls, with no weapons, no radar, no engines or fixtures, for nearly $4 billion a pop. That’s a criminal price tag. “If we look at countries like South Korea, they are manufacturing entire frigates that are bigger and better armed for a fraction of the price BAE is charging for a bare hull.” “This is not about investing in defence, it’s about rewarding failure by a bunch of politicians who haven’t got the guts to defend the national interest.”

No one wins in trade war, says Chinese embassy in US Earlier, Trump promised to impose an additional 10% tariff on all goods from China due to the alleged large-scale drug smuggling from China into the US WASHINGTON DC, November 26/ China believes that neither side can win the trade war, embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu told TASS. Commenting on US President-elect Donald Trump's remarks about his intention to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods due to the fact that the US allegedly receives large-scale drug smuggling from China, the spokesman said: "About the issue of US tariffs on China, China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature. No one will win a trade war or a tariff war." "Carrying out counternarcotics cooperation is one of the important common understandings reached between President Xi [Jinping] and US President [Joe] Biden during their meeting in San Francisco in 2023. The counternarcotics authorities of China and the US have resumed regular communication since the San Francisco Summit. The Chinese side has notified the US side of the progress made in US-related law enforcement operations against narcotics," the Chinese diplomat added. "China has responded to the US request for verifying clues on certain cases and taken action. All these prove that the idea of China knowingly allowing fentanyl precursors to flow into the United States runs completely counter to facts and reality," Liu Pengyu emphasized. Earlier, Trump promised to impose an additional 10% tariff on all goods from China due to the alleged large-scale drug smuggling from China into the US. #business #finance #financialservices

South Korea issued a stern warning to North Korea, stating that any harm to its citizens would result in the "end of its regime." This came after threats from Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, claiming South Korean drones had intruded over Pyongyang. The South's defense ministry emphasized that jeopardizing citizen safety would lead to serious consequences. The threats followed accusations that South Korea had launched unmanned drones multiple times this month. Kim Yo-jong suggested strong retaliatory measures if drone activity persisted. In response, South Korea condemned North Korea's provocations, labeling them as distractions from internal issues, including failed military projects. The ruling People Power Party supported the defense ministry, asserting that North Korea's actions would not destabilize South Korea's security. In retaliation, North Korea reportedly sent balloons filled with trash into South Korea, seen as an attempt to deflect blame for its government failings. Kim Yo-jong's remarks were viewed as efforts to sow division among South Koreans. North Korea's state media stoked public outrage over the alleged drone flights, amplifying calls for revenge. This approach aims to galvanize the North's population and escalate hostilities, moving away from unification and reinforcing the two Koreas as adversaries. #AsiaRisk #NorthKorea #SouthKorea https://lnkd.in/g7ABYPun Crisis Management Planning for an NK Crisis Get the Erudite Risk NK Crisis Toolkit https://lnkd.in/gSGK9_fS

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspected a new tactical missile weapons system manufactured by the Korean People's Army, calling for an "epochal change" in war preparations and stressing the need for timely completion of ongoing weapons production plans. The newly unveiled weapons are thought to be the "Hwasong-11 Ra" close-range ballistic missiles, with a range of 100 kilometers. The inspection follows a recent visit to munitions factories and tests of updated rocket launcher systems, amid speculation that North Korea is ramping up production to potentially supply weapons to Russia. Experts suggest that North Korea's disclosure of these weapons is aimed at diversifying their weapons portfolio for potential exports. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #SouthKorea Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/djEGJPAZ

#StatecraftInTheNews: The US has no immediate plans to withdraw its Typhon missile system from the Philippines, despite Chinese demands, new reports have claimed. The system, capable of hitting Chinese targets, remains in the region after joint exercises earlier this year. Positioned in northern Luzon, near the Taiwan Strait, the Typhon system is key to US strategy in Asia. It's currently undergoing feasibility tests for potential use in a regional conflict, Philippine officials said. China's defence ministry criticised the deployment, accusing Washington of escalating tensions in the Indo-Pacific. Russia also cited the move when resuming nuclear-capable missile production. Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo assured Beijing that the system would pose no threat to China, while US and Filipino forces would continue training with the missile system, which may stay beyond September. As the US bolsters anti-ship defences in the region, experts believe the system's presence gives the Philippines a strategic advantage in the South China Sea, deterring Chinese assertiveness.
