The Nature and Climate Crisis: Conferences vs. On the Ground Action! The gap between discussing climate financing and real-world action can’t be bigger. While conferences and podcasts on nature restoration and carbon projects thrive, we must prioritize on-the-ground progress. Carbon “tech” start-ups and “financial infrastructure” like exchanges / marketplaces attracting (and burning) millions of dollars are important, but they only work if we can successfully bring carbon projects from paper to soil. Yes, select corporates are ready to sign large offtake deals, but largely without upfront capital payments. Yes, many funds are emerging but want to invest in de-risked projects with larger cheques (>$20-50m). The biggest gap lies in funding early-stage initiatives ($100k to $5m) for feasibility, design, development, and validation. Honestly, I think if we just redirect 50% of conference budgets into these crucial early-stage initiatives - most of the financing gap could be closed. Really innovative (and much needed) proposal by Tanja Havemann and Adam Wolfensohn to direct catalytic capital to emerging markets, where first time fund managers and founders, very much knowledgeable of their markets’ idiosyncrasies and opportunities, certainly could make use of warehousing vehicles to assist them launch their investment propositions. This would not only accelerate investments in clean technologies and climate assets in those markets, but also revert in the solidification and growth of the asset management sector in emerging economies as well as catalyze larger sums of capital in the regions that need it the most. #climatefinance #blendedfinance #emergingmarkets #climateinvestments

The #Paris2024 Olympics set a new benchmark by committing to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, setting a new standard for large-scale events, far exceeding the average emissions of the London (2012) and Rio (2016) Games. By targeting every source of emissions and rallying all the parties involved, they're attempting to prove that another model can work. Paris 2024 focused on reducing emissions in three categories: transportation (34%), operations (33%), and construction (33%). Since it'll be over before we know it, they are already sharing their tools & methodology to allow others to step up their environmental transition game (pun intended) as it relates to major events. They are applying the ARO approach - avoid, reduce, offset - and of note: added two stages (forecast and mobilization). Breakdown: 🌏 Anticipate: They developed a tool to measure carbon footprint in order to gauge choices made since the bidding phase. 🌎 Avoid - They use 95% existing/temporary infrastructure and are only using facilities that can be used after the games are over. 🌏 Reduce - Accurately identified emission sources + proposed solutions activity-wide: low-carbon structures, renewable energy, sustainable catering, etc. 🌍 Offset - Takes into account the broadest component: the indirect impact of the games (e.g: travel by spectators). All emissions the can't be avoided are offset by projects designed to benefit all 5 continents. Early projects in place since 2021. 🌏 Mobilize: They plan to harness the potential of sport as an effective driver of the environmental transition and rally everyone (employees, partners, the sport movement, and also citizens) in the process. And I love this: They launched their own "climate coach" an app to measure your own personal + professional carbon footprint. 📢 ICVCM confirms Verra and ART meet its high-integrity benchmark Only yesterday we posted our guide to key carbon action standards, and 'greater integration of the standards' was one of the key trends we flagged to watch out for. Each step like this is key in moving quickly to an integrated and coherent framework. Integration will allow buyers of credits to have confidence they are utilizing credits of the right quality that will serve their climate action objectives and will stand-up to scrutiny. The more we can simplify and clarify the regulation and standards around this industry, the better. There are many examples across other industries where corporates can take positive action and be confident that they are following clear and integrated rules. Great piece by Shely Aronov! "I believe Climate Inc. often means trying to convince corporations to pay for things that don’t benefit their bottom line. That’s why many climate startups struggle as they look for revenues: Corporations want concrete benefits, not the more diffuse value of helping the planet. Over-indexing on sustainability helps founders raise capital from climate investors, but they are the only group willing to allocate capital to the cause." I would just add that savvy climate tech VCs are definitely investing in startups that make wide commercial adoption & customer obsession key tenets while building their companies. #climatetech #climateVC #startups

📰 📣 🎇 PR needs to be a core capability for climate tech startups. As climate tech startups launch new technologies and business models to reduce GHG emissions and remove CO2 from the atmosphere, they likely need build markets for their offerings. In addition to "traditional" activities like customer research, product development, and sales, climate tech startups also need to invest in PR capabilities to increase awareness of their solution and influence public policy changes. Following the adoption of Article 6.4 at COP29, two significant developments have emerged in carbon markets: 🇪🇺 In Europe, the EU Council has approved the Certification Framework for Carbon Removals (CRCF), reinforcing transparency and accountability in carbon farming, permanent removals, and product-based storage. With the EU ETS as a backbone, Europe’s regulatory leadership remains steady, even as voluntary markets experience turbulence. 🇺🇸 In the U.S., Senators Murkowski and Bennett have introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at incentivizing carbon capture technologies through tax code changes. While the U.S. lacks a centralized federal carbon market, this proposal represents a critical step in driving innovation and investment in scalable solutions. Policy momentum is growing, but the markets tell a more nuanced story. Despite these advancements, voluntary carbon markets remain under pressure, with transaction volumes continuing to contract. Regulatory markets like the EU ETS have been less affected, underscoring the importance of strong frameworks to weather market volatility. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐔𝐧𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐂𝐐𝐆 by Jonathan Beynon Negotiations on a new climate finance goal (𝐍𝐂𝐐𝐆) are stuck. There has been little progress on the two biggest issues: how big should the goal be, and who should pay. This matters. COP29—the last before countries commit to new targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions in updated Nationally Determined Contributions due to be submitted by February 2025—has long been billed “the finance COP.” Failure to agree the new collective quantified goal on climate finance (NCQG) risks weakening those targets and undermining our chances of limiting dangerous climate change. The positions of developed and developing countries remain entrenched and far apart, and a deal hangs in the balance. Developed countries have so far refused to commit any additional money beyond the existing $100bn/year goal, insisting that the world has changed since the original group of contributors—23 developed countries (the “Annex II” countries) that were members of the OECD in 1992— was first agreed. They argue that new donors should first be added to this group and emphasise the role that private finance has to play. Developing countries, meanwhile, insist that both legal and moral responsibility lies with developed countries, and that the current goal is woefully inadequate. I’m struck by the overwhelmingly positive response to the Biden-Harris administration’s new principles for voluntary carbon markets. While this is a significant step forward, we must acknowledge the need for continuous improvement. The focus on robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) is critical. However, I think we need to aspire for more. In my gut I feel that additionality should be dynamically calculated across all methodologies and registries, adapting in near real-time. Project developers need to recognize that the primary function of offsets projects is not to be a cash cow, but rather to address greenhouse gases; the additionality discount should be actively adjusted to reflect true impact. Voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) play a crucial role in our long-term climate strategy. Yet, they are inherently imperfect and require constant recalibration. Until very recently the technology simply wasn't ready to facilitate that, I believe that now it is. Additionality changes with each new project and every ton of CO2e addressed. My belief in VCMs is strong enough that I’ve spent over a year interviewing thought leaders, compiling resources, and creating content on this topic. However, at the end of the day, we need to address the root issue: pricing emissions to resolve the greenhouse gas externality. Repetition might be tedious, but the GHG externality has been my “Roman Empire” of climate focus for years. Consider if it's yours too.
