Really innovative (and much needed) proposal by Tanja Havemann and Adam Wolfensohn to direct catalytic capital to emerging markets, where first time fund managers and founders, very much knowledgeable of their markets’ idiosyncrasies and opportunities, certainly could make use of warehousing vehicles to assist them launch their investment propositions. This would not only accelerate investments in clean technologies and climate assets in those markets, but also revert in the solidification and growth of the asset management sector in emerging economies as well as catalyze larger sums of capital in the regions that need it the most. #climatefinance #blendedfinance #emergingmarkets #climateinvestments

The Nature and Climate Crisis: Conferences vs. On the Ground Action! The gap between discussing climate financing and real-world action can’t be bigger. While conferences and podcasts on nature restoration and carbon projects thrive, we must prioritize on-the-ground progress. Carbon “tech” start-ups and “financial infrastructure” like exchanges / marketplaces attracting (and burning) millions of dollars are important, but they only work if we can successfully bring carbon projects from paper to soil. Yes, select corporates are ready to sign large offtake deals, but largely without upfront capital payments. Yes, many funds are emerging but want to invest in de-risked projects with larger cheques (>$20-50m). The biggest gap lies in funding early-stage initiatives ($100k to $5m) for feasibility, design, development, and validation. Honestly, I think if we just redirect 50% of conference budgets into these crucial early-stage initiatives - most of the financing gap could be closed. Is <2% enough? No. That is what I will be speaking about at the IPEM conference. While impact investing is growing, it still only represents much less than 2% of the capital markets and that is far from enough. Impact investing is actually the fastest growing asset class, but we need more financing. Especially in Europe, the birthplace of impact investing. Too much capital is going overseas currently. France and U.K. has been front runners in developing impact while delivering market returns. Financial institutions and the deep social commitment in France have pushed our fund very far. Today, we are a European fund with offices and investors in France, Denmark, Spain, Germany and Italy, where we assist entrepreneurs in cross-boarder growth. Now is the time for us to bring true scaling of impact investing in Europe. Our next fund is soon ready to be launched, and our team is eager to deploy it. For the Nordic region, we have just hired two new employees and our new partner for Italy is soon to be announced. This week, we are back for the 8th time at IPEM which is an important LP GP fundraising conference for us. The #IPEM conference gives us a great platform to speak about impact, meet and re-connect with the industry and bring attention to the financing needs. We care for a more just transition: reducing inequalities, boosting climate action and raising community voices. While delivering solid market returns across our first 3 social impact growth funds. Our entrepreneurs don't compromise on financial growth - while helping in job people that are neurodiverse, have a handicap or are long-term unemployed/newcomers. Or for example creating solutions that provides access to health, helps over-indebted people or assist vulnerable children in schools. Coincidentally, Mario Draghi's report on EU competitiveness was released today highlighting that weak economic growth and productivity pose significant threats to social equality and decarbonization efforts in Europe. Climate change is already happening. And, as reported in the IPCC 6th assessment report, the most vulnerable populations will be the most affected. Not everybody has the means to overcome human life's inequalities and injustices, and it seems that European societies are getting more divided. Let's make sure it doesn't get out of control by investing in both Green and Social Impact. Attention all dairy lovers (yep, I see you out there, cheese lovers 🧀 & milk chuggers 🥛): I bet you haven't considered the methane (which is 80x more potent than CO2) that those food choices are pumping into the atmosphere. Methane is responsible for about half of the lifecycle emissions of an average dairy product - all because those dairy cows burp...a lot! Given the adverse impact of methane on climate (with methane emissions causing about a third of the warming we are experiencing today), it is time for the financial sector to focus on encouraging the food and agriculture industry to do more to reduce methane emissions. In the words of my colleagues, there's stuff we can do about it: 1) New solutions are emerging that can have a big effect on livestock methane 2) Measurement is also getting better 3) There is policy support available in many places; and 4) The industry is starting to work together to tackle this issue, such as through the EDF-supported Dairy Methane Action Alliance. McKinsey & Company have done a nice job here explaining the opportunity to use natural climate solutions (NCS) to help achieve the 1.5 degree Paris goals.... https://lnkd.in/emaZt5da Among these solutions, regenerative agriculture can play a pivotal role. Why is this important? NCS can deliver nearly one-third of this goal, removing up to 7 gigatons of carbon annually. Regenerative agriculture, a key element, achieves this by: 🌾 Improving soil health through practices like cover cropping and no-till farming, which lock carbon into the soil. 🌱 Supporting biodiversity by integrating diverse crops and perennials. 💧 Enhancing water quality and retention, making ecosystems more resilient. Critically, regenerative agriculture can offer added benefits. I'm having an extended New York Climate Week: still on the East Coast pursuing some interesting conversations about how to accelerate finance toward the transition of cities and bioregions. Enjoying the last dregs of summery weather before I head back to the cold, grey Netherlands. Since I haven't yet been able to step back and fully process the takeaways from the couple dozen events we co-hosted or participated in, here is a quick snippet. Please check out this conversation I had with Anne Sophie Garrigou of Climate-KIC where I reflect on the "Missing Trillions" - the massive gap in climate and transition finance. Over the course of a year of hosting dialogues on this topic, I have personally gotten to a point of clarity: 💰 The economic and financial systems are not designed to drive capital to the paces it needs to go for decarbonization and regeneration. 💸 Redesigning the system & building alternatives is something we should pursue, but it will take way too long to put a dent in the problem on the timescale we need. We will continue in parallel. 💲 Blended capital instruments (different kinds of capital with different risk profiles), deployed in a way to distribute risk and reward among whole groups of actors (in a place-based or sectoral way) are essential to drive capital in the right direction. They are a hack! They allow for continued problematic incentives. But they are necessary to circumventing the blockages in the system and unlocking the Missing Trillions. Curious if anyone knows of other hacks of this type. We have spent a year cataloguing and exploring. There are plenty of other lessons we have learned, but many solutions ultimately converge around this typology. 👉🏼 The transition to a low-carbon France is not an easy one. It requires households to get involved and invest in the short term. This can fuel a rejection of the policies implementing the transition. Faced with this difficulty, should we turn back or look for a way forward that can gain a broader support? 👉🏼 This is what is at stake in the campaign for the elections in France. Some political parties are putting forward proposals to help the middle and working classes make the transition. Others are tempted, whether they admit it or not, to reject any policy remotely associated with a low-carbon future. Let’s be clear from the outset: the second path is a dead end, which the political parties should not embark upon. Read the analysis 👇🏼

This insightful paper addresses the issues we work on every day and a lot of ideas that I share with Pierre-Nicolas Hurstel to make the best use of this technology to extend the life of products.  Repairability, reliability and therefore the lifespan of a product are gradually approaching the importance they should have within a product's purchase decision. The #Paris2024 Olympics set a new benchmark by committing to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, setting a new standard for large-scale events, far exceeding the average emissions of the London (2012) and Rio (2016) Games. By targeting every source of emissions and rallying all the parties involved, they're attempting to prove that another model can work. Paris 2024 focused on reducing emissions in three categories: transportation (34%), operations (33%), and construction (33%). Since it'll be over before we know it, they are already sharing their tools & methodology to allow others to step up their environmental transition game (pun intended) as it relates to major events. They are applying the ARO approach - avoid, reduce, offset - and of note: added two stages (forecast and mobilization). Breakdown: 🌏 Anticipate: They developed a tool to measure carbon footprint in order to gauge choices made since the bidding phase. 🌎 Avoid - They use 95% existing/temporary infrastructure and are only using facilities that can be used after the games are over. 🌏 Reduce - Accurately identified emission sources + proposed solutions activity-wide: low-carbon structures, renewable energy, sustainable catering, etc. 🌍 Offset - Takes into account the broadest component: the indirect impact of the games (e.g: travel by spectators). All emissions the can't be avoided are offset by projects designed to benefit all 5 continents. Early projects in place since 2021. 🌏 Mobilize: They plan to harness the potential of sport as an effective driver of the environmental transition and rally everyone (employees, partners, the sport movement, and also citizens) in the process. And I love this: They launched their own "climate coach" an app to measure your own personal + professional carbon footprint. [Measuring impacts on biodiversity 3/3] Is the global economy designed to consume biodiversity? Partha Dasgupta c and Simon Levin present a comprehensive analysis of the design flaws in the way we manage the economic system in their article titled « Economic Factors Underlying Biodiversity Loss ». They propose a new "grammar" for economic reasoning that acknowledges humanity's embeddedness in nature: 👉🏼 They argue contemporary economic thinking, including the economics of #climate change, fails to recognise that humans are part of nature, instead viewing us as customers drawing on nature's resources. 👉🏼 The authors provide examples of how the current ecological crisis was brought up by errors in economic reasoning, such as the management of property rights regarding natural services considered global public goods. 👉🏼 Excessive trade liberalisation without consideration for local ecosystems leads to a transfer of wealth from exporting to importing countries. 👉🏼 They identify necessary institutional reforms for managing global public goods like oceans and tropical rainforests as an « inclusive #wealth », which measurement by national statistical offices could complement GDP. Human activities at all levels, from households to global communities, should be reshaped to take into account how we deploy our capital stocks, including ecosystems. This approach highlights the potential risks associated with investments that do not consider their impact on local #ecosystems, drawing on nature's services beyond its ability to supply them sustainably. It would be valuable to explore further how the concept of "inclusive wealth" could be operationalised in practice by developing indicators to measure wealth in a way that includes the value of ecosystems. Peru’s climate finance moment has arrived. 🇵🇪🌱🌎 The country’s natural resources and biodiversity make it an important destination for capital dedicated to taking care of our planet. The local ecosystem to support entrepreneurs is in place. Various programs are offering investment and value-add support to entrepreneurs. These include: EBBF Amazonia (Kurt Rothschild, Stefanie Delgado), Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) Libélula (Natalie Rona, Alberto Cuba), NESsT (Diana Alejandra Ramirez, Mauricio Verkooijen), Alianza Empresarial por la Amoniza (Willy Espinoza, Christian Ruiz), Incubagraria , Hub Udep (Carlos Rodrich), among others. Government initiatives from MINAM (Jesus Valverde) and PRODUCE as well was organizations like Profonanpe (Anton Willems, Claudia Godfrey) and Aliados de Impacto-NAB Perú (Marisela Vega) are congregating stakeholders and leading the dialogue for best practicas in impact investing. There is also strong international presence from global NGOs The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International, and WWF Perú. You can see all this activity in a public mapping exercise that highlights many of the key people, organizations, investors, and companies that are part of the climate finance community in Peru.
