As the #COP29 discussions begin, African Civil Society called upon world leaders to prioritize adaptation, Loss & Damage, and a just transition that meets the urgent needs of African communities on the frontlines of climate change. The key demands and asks echoed by African civil society, touched on pressing needs including, adaptation, climate Finance, Just Energy Transition and Critical minerals, mitigation, loss and damage, Carbon Markets, transparency and reiteration of Africa as a region of Special Needs and Circumstances.

Rethinking Conservation Finance: Localizing Funding and Markets for Lasting Impact   One of the persistent challenges in nature-focused collective investment vehicles in developing nations is managing currency risk. For example, with African Wildlife Capital (AWC) conservation bonds, we often faced a difficult choice: expose investees to currency fluctuations or take on that risk ourselves. In some cases, even profitable local currency investments ultimately yielded hard-currency losses. This recurring challenge highlights a broader issue in the nature finance sector: reliance on foreign capital, which often constrains the potential for sustainable growth in developing economies.   Yet, this obstacle also points to an emerging opportunity: raising funds in local currency at source. Why should conservation finance in many emerging nations continues to rely only on overseas capital? Countries like Kenya have growing capital markets, an expanding insurance sector, and pension assets that could be strategically mobilized. Conservation finance practitioners have an opportunity, and perhaps a responsibility, to prioritize raising local capital to address local environmental needs.   At Conservation Capital, we’re actively exploring ways to make this shift by rethinking the structure of nature-based business models. Tourism, historically a core business sector in conservation, has typically been designed and priced for international visitors, largely excluding domestic markets. Now, there’s a significant opportunity to make nature-based tourism more accessible to local communities in developing nations.   Our work with Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya has already shown success. By setting accessible price points, Ol Pejeta has become a destination for nearly 100,000 local tourists each year. This premier rhino sanctuary and conservancy demonstrates how engaging domestic markets can strengthen conservation efforts while empowering and benefiting local communities. Kenya exemplifies the power of local markets, which could become pivotal drivers for nature conservation and restoration and significant opportunity now exists to move beyond the tourism example and build locally capitalised nature financing mechanisms. More on this to come – watch this space.   By leveraging local capital and fostering local markets, locally-driven conservation efforts can become more resilient and rooted in national priorities. I had a productive side meeting today in Berlin with the H.E Prosper Associé Dodiko President of the Commission des Forêts d’Afrique Centrale (Comifac RDC) and Burundi’s Minister of Environment. Our discussions reaffirmed the #CongoBasin Forest's critical role in global #conservation and #climateresilience. We explored how linking conservation with development is essential for Africa's future. We also addressed one of the biggest challenges—ensuring that #financialsystems effectively channel resources to where they are most needed on the ground. Africa must lead the way in #conservation, with #Africanvoices shaping solutions to global environmental challenges. #Africanleadership #AfricanConservation

🌍📸 Have to share this picture of participants from the Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) event that was held together with GreenCape and the National Business Initiative (NBI) in Joburg! The #CFASouthAfrica is a technical assistance programme funded by the UK Government to accelerate climate finance to emerging markets and developing economies. 🌱💼 We had the opportunity to listen to pitches from 10 participating projects in the core cohort and five early-stage projects which have received technical, financial, gender equality and social inclusion capacity building, moving them closer to bankability. They are all drawn from strategically important sectors in South Africa, all critical to supporting the country’s climate ambitions. 🔥 The CFA aims to tackle three major climate finance challenges in SA: - Limited pipelines of bankable low-carbon projects. - Difficulty in accessing and mobilising climate finance. - A climate finance ecosystem that is not always enabling. 💡🌟 Super inspired by the emerging innovative solutions in place to address the climate challenge!
