If we value what people can do more than we value what God can do, we will be easily tempted to make wrong choices, just as the Pharisees and rulers of Israel did. JOHN 12:42-43 GWN 42 Many rulers believed in Jesus. However, they wouldn't admit it publicly because the Pharisees would have thrown them out of the synagogue. 43 They were more concerned about what people thought of them than about what God thought of them. What motivates you? Put another way: why do you do what you do? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to have God praise you? It's worth thinking about. (We're talking about rewards, not acceptance with God or getting into Heaven. We are not saved and put in right standing with God on the basis of our good works, but solely as a gift we receive by God's grace. Neither do we "earn" God's love which is really an expression of His character. However, it is still possible to be honored by God. Those who have done the will of God will be rewarded.) Most people are motivated by what other people think, or what they think other people might think. In essence, this is the fear of man, being mostly concerned about what people will think, or how they will respond. If you live for human praise you need to understand that even if you obtain it, it will not last for long. It is true that getting praise from God is not something that can be expected quickly. Enjoying God's praise is evidently something that happens primarily after this life. At least as far as being praised publicly. However, I value that quiet, inner assurance I experience when I do something I know has pleased God. This is also a form of "praise from God" encouraging us to do His will, even when there seems to be no immediate outward results. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧! The Bible emphasizes the importance of ongoing repentance and confession of sins. While the sacrifice of Jesus is sufficient to cover all sin, Scripture consistently calls believers to a life of continual repentance and reliance on God’s grace. 1 John 1:9 (NIV): “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” This verse highlights the necessity of confessing sins to receive forgiveness. It implies an ongoing process, where believers must continue to seek forgiveness as they sin. Matthew 6:12 (NIV): “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches His disciples to regularly ask for forgiveness. This suggests that forgiveness is not a one-time event but a continual need. Hebrews 10:26-27 (NIV): “If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.” This passage warns against the presumption that one’s sins are automatically covered without repentance. It underscores the seriousness of ongoing sin and the need for continued repentance. The Need for Perseverance: Philippians 2:12 (NIV): “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” Believers are encouraged to continually work out their salvation, which involves ongoing repentance and spiritual growth. Jesus’ Role as High Priest: Hebrews 7:25 (NIV): “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” Jesus’ ongoing intercession for believers suggests that forgiveness is a continual process. While His sacrifice was once for all, His intercession continues, indicating that believers must continue to seek forgiveness. The Bible does not teach that future sins are automatically forgiven without the need for ongoing confession and repentance. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of continually coming before God in humility, confessing sins, and seeking His forgiveness. Jesus' sacrifice is sufficient to cover all sin, but the application of that forgiveness in a believer’s life involves an ongoing relationship with God characterized by repentance, faith, and reliance on His grace. Unrepentant sin leads to spiritual blindness, and can indeed affect Christians, leading to a lack of awareness or understanding of spiritual truths, even though they believe in Christ. through self-examination, repentance, seeking God's wisdom, and striving for spiritual maturity, believers can overcome this blindness and grow in their faith. Remain vigilant and responsive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Today, let’s look at the last of those three commands in verse 18: Give thanks in all circumstances. This is one of those commands that, while simple, can feel daunting, or even impossible, at times. How do we feel gratitude when life isn’t fair, when pain tries to push out our joy, or when doubt clouds our vision? The beauty of this command isn't about the absence of difficulty, but rather our response to it. When we express gratitude in all circumstances, it isn't a denial of challenges. It's a bold declaration of faith. It's choosing to recognize God's presence and power even during tough situations, not despite them. We don’t have to be thankful for our circumstances–but we can always choose to be thankful while we’re in them. Recall God’s faithfulness, speak of His goodness, declare His character, and find strength in His promises when our own falter. Gratitude shifts our focus. So, one more time, let’s look at all three of these commands together: Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
