I'm really fond of the AlgorithmWatch newsletter. The latest issue is both fascinating and terrifying. I was hooked by the title : how to design antifascist #AI. Spoiler alert : it does not seem possible yet because of how AI is structured.. Resources regarding AI in France are terrifying from automated facial recognition in public transport to automatically detecting swimming pools (and how it can go terribly wrong). Not that other countries seem to fare better. We hear more and more about the environmental impacts of AI and there's a (relatively) new topic emerging here : keeping in mind that AI will never be totally accurate. This is a huge problem and could lead to considerable harm. A few years ago, there was some focus on how to balance inaccuracy with the cost of training a model (for example to reduce environmental impacts). But the possibility for errors is sometimes not acceptable. As illustrated with the example of swimming pools, relying on AI to make some process easier/faster led to a huge increase of work for some very human employees. Robo-debt is another concerning example. And there are many others. Should AI be both the poison and the antidote ? Software is the #1  IT spending category + a critical topic for the Comex due to its growing impact on EBIDTA The key drivers for software spending growth are: • Uncontrolled software (Shadow IT) • Unoptimized software spending • Vendor price increases    While solutions exist to ensure software usage is aligned with spend, effectively managing vendor price increases remains unaddressed. 𝟭 - 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝗧 • Shadow IT represents ~ 33% of software stacks • Detecting it is a key step to assigning IT buyers • This is the start of monitoring / optimizing spend • Solutions such as Beamy detect all software usage 𝟮 - 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • Around 30% of software licenses are unused • Monitoring actual usage versus contracts is tough • Automating monitoring helps identify opportunities • This enables licenses to be cut when relevant • Solutions such as USU, Zlury exist 𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀? I listened this morning to a discussion on Silicon Carne between Carlos Diaz and Mehdi Boudoukhane about what truly constitutes an AI product. Their conversation cut through the noise of "AI washing" that's become all too common in tech. They emphasized that real AI products solve concrete problems and deliver measurable value - a perspective I totally agree with. This discussion resonates with our journey at Meero. For years, we've been building AI-driven solutions for visual content in industries like Real Estate, Automotive, and Fashion. Our products - CarCutter, AutoRetouch, and ProperShot - use AI to create new visuals and edit photos, addressing real-world challenges in these sectors. Despite our focus on practical AI applications, we've often struggled to be recognized as an AI company. The burden of our past positioning as a professional photography marketplace and the noise in the AI space made it challenging to showcase our real technological advancements. New paper from myself and Anne Laure Thibaud (Thieullent) on the topic of how the rise of operational AI is going to fundamentally alter the way that organizations need to look at data. Key points: 1) GenAI (and Agentic) will enable digital employees at operational speeds 2) Digital Employees need data that reflects the operational reality 3) You need to establish a digital operating model 4) You'll need to plan for people managing AI as well as people 5) The Business needs to take control of its digital reality When we started writing this paper it felt like this world was still a while away, since then we've had an explosion in applications embedding GenAI and Agentic solutions. So now it more feels like this is how you need to plan for 2025 rather than a vision for the medium term.
