Some strong arguments in this article by Rune Madsen about why the field of product design has "lost its way" in his words: "Design workflows at most tech companies follow an incredible number of structured tasks... These concepts originated in the service design industry and initially helped facilitate a very human-focused design process – which, of course, is good. "However, driven by a desire from businesses to turn design into a process-heavy, measurable function, we’re filling our time with checklists instead of focusing on the very thing that makes designers relevant: our ability to propose new points of view and delight users with meaningful experiences. These core competences that were inherited from graphic design have been replaced with a poor man’s version of an anthropology major where the act of design is mostly based on averaging user opinions. "Design is both an objective and subjective art. But because of a persistent fear of making bad decisions, businesses have ended up leaning so heavily on objective measures that we have severely limited our ability to create meaningful impact within organizations." While Rune's article isn't focused on solutions, his articulation of the problem left me nodding my head in agreement. If there is a constant in the field of product design, it is this: We will spend our entire careers reminding, educating, and evangelizing why design exists. Overheard yesterday at Hatch Design Leadership Ateliers: “Design systems are a luxury.” Not what Figma wants you to think definitely. But even though we had big UX and Product teams at the companies I worked before, design systems were always underdeveloped and out of date. The gap between best practices by design system gurus and actual reality is pretty large for most design teams. We can’t always afford to do all these best practices while managing business as usual. That does not mean we are not good designers. We are just not the fairytale version of them and that is fine. So yeah I think design systems are a luxury for many of us small design teams. That doesn’t mean we should not strive to be better but don’t beat yourself up over it. The usual disclaimer, just my own 2 cents, don’t follow every advice you read on LinkedIn.

Instead of digging your heals in to "you don't understand UX or design", spend just half that energy on understanding your stakeholders, what they value, what they're up against. Loved this from Michael Holzer and Academy UX Adam Perlis. ✨ This is the biggest differentiator that I see from junior to senior product designers. Learning what hills to die on is a skill that isn't taught in bootcamp or school. Watch your design leaders. Ask how they make trade offs. Think at a skip level. Ask what matter's to their leaders. This is a way faster road to successful projects, careers, and relationships.

One thing that stands out to me is how crucial the concept of trust is—yet it can be tricky to define and measure. This research offers valuable insights that I believe are worth considering as we bridge the gap between technology and design. Here are a few key points to keep in mind when designing AI-driven user journeys: Transparency & Explainability: Provide clear explanations and visualisations to make AI more accessible. Fair & Impartial Design: Ensure diverse datasets and user testing groups to minimise bias. Privacy by Design: Feature clear, prominent privacy controls and settings. Accountability & Responsibility: Enable users to review and manage their data. Robust & Reliable: Allow users to verify or cross-check AI-generated information. User Education: Help users understand both the capabilities and limitations of AI. ✨ Figma gets better and onboards AI. Just a few hours ago, #Figma unveiled an array of new updates and enhancements specifically tailored for designers and developers at Figma Config 2024. I like it, and historically, Figma’s updates have not caused major issues. ⚪️ Generative Auto Layouts/New DevMode: These features are functional and show incremental improvements. ⚪️ Generative AI for #UXUI: Figma is taking bold steps with its generative layout design. With just a few clicks, you can assemble components. It’s not very impressive yet, but remember, Midjourney v1 wasn’t initially impressive either. The future is definitely bright. ⚪️ Visual search: Dream feature 🤩. Now, search for your missing screen using an image or text prompt. E.g., search for ‘admin dashboard’ or ‘LinkedIn cover’ and with the help of AI Figma will display matching results in your workspace or Figma community ⚪️ AI prompting: Super cool. Use it to remove image backgrounds, translate layouts into any language automatically, auto-name layers, and more. When viewing the mockups from an external UX designer, be concerned if they use the phrase "And here we have a very nice element..." to introduce a design element more than once. 'Very nice' is similar to 'interesting', as a way of saying something vaguely positive but also meaningless. Designs should stand on their own with users, but will be explained and discussed with stakeholders during the iteration process. If the designer does not know what to say about their work beyond 'it's very nice', then everyone else will probably find it merely 'interesting'. (Designers: be confident in your work. You shouldn't need to soften your message.) And if a designer ever uses the phrase "a very nice *little*," get a new designer right away. #uiux #productdesign #confidence
