🎉 I am very excited because today I received notification that my organization SaveClimate. Earth won first place in the REMARKABLE Climate Leaders Neutrality Solutions Contest🏆. Entries were judged on 💡 innovation 💡 impact 💡 practicality 💡 feasibility 💡 relevance and our solution won 🤩. It is an accolade for the ECO climate currency and the idea of introducing personal emissions budgets to all citizens. We are delighted that the ECO has been recognized as having the potential to drive the transition to a sustainable, climate-neutral future.🌱 ✅ As a result we can look forward to exclusive coaching and of course we hope that the ECO climate currency will become even more widely known and that we can further expand our network. LA Climate Week Day 3 & 4 Recap 🏝 : As the extreme temperatures slowly start to cool off (relatively), #ClimateMonth and #LAClimateWeek are heating up! Day 3 began with the early morning #GYC #YouthClimateTraining2024 hosted by The Global Youth Coalition, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford and Oxford Net Zero. From transparency and AI involvement in reporting to accountability and pathways toward formal regulations, the third session covered The Net Zero Corporate Governance Landscape as three brilliant speakers, Vikrant Srivastava, Camilla Hyslop, and Alexis McGivern, shared various aspects of the work needed to achieve and surpass #netzero. Thanks to information shared with me by Kaveer Phillip, I spent the following two hours filling in any gaps in my schedule during the LA Climate Week with events from the #VirtualIslandSummit hosted by Island Innovation. Attending as many #VIS2024 meetings as possible, I was able to see part of the documentary film screening of How to Power a City: Renewable Energy and catch a few minutes of the Energy Efficiency First: A Fireside Chat on Cayman’s Energy Journey. One of the most helpful and informative events so far was the Breaking Into the #HiddenJobMarket call led by Natalie Lavery from Climate People, and I look forward to implementing these alternative strategies. Moreover, discussions during The Most Impactful Climate Job event explained and expanded on a tier system that analyzes the extent to which certain jobs have direct effects on sustainability efforts. Tuesday’s events concluded with the UCLA Anderson School of Management hosting #ClimateCareers: Ted Talks & Networking which focused predominantly on utility-based work in relation to energy transition. Wednesday morning began with three more #VIS2024 events: Navigating the Future of #ResponsibleTourism for Islands; Voices from the Caribbean: Barbuda’s fight for land rights and #climatejustice; and Maximizing Resource Efficiency and Minimizing Waste: Exploring Circular Economy Solutions in the #Caribbean. Addressing the key roles of community-engagement and social justice within the greater climate conversation, the speakers highlighted the need for integration of diverse cultural practices and the historical nature of local sustainable initiatives. Another repeated theme was the emphasis on collaboration among #SIDS and the benefits that come from sharing sustainable development strategies, technologies, resources, and ideas to achieve our common goal. Following the Climate Capital Panel and another successful networking event at Expert Dojo in #SantaMonica, we have reached the halfway point of LA Climate Week and the Virtual Island Summit! That’s my #LACW Day 3 and 4 wrap up, so stay tuned for the next update on an even busier day 5 and more exciting day 6…

💡 How can funders align climate mitigation and adaptation? In an article for Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association, ECF Director Jozsef Feiler and Mindworks Lab Founder Stefan Flothmann outline the role philanthropy can play in bridging the gap between climate adaptation and mitigation. Historically seen as separate, these strategies are more effective when integrated. By supporting projects that involve communities in adaptation efforts, we can meet immediate needs, build stronger social connections, and foster agency. By funding initiatives that integrate adaptation with mitigation, funders can encourage cooperation, counter powerlessness, and build public support for long-term climate efforts. Adaptation and mitigation are not opposing priorities but complementary approaches—two sides of the same coin. In today’s rapidly changing world, adaptation must go hand in hand with mitigation, serving as a foundation for fostering agency and building social capital. In a compelling article for Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association, Jozsef Feiler from the European Climate Foundation and Stefan Flothmann explore how historically distinct strategies of mitigation and adaptation can achieve greater impact when integrated. The answer for us was: A lot! While planning and framing this event from an intersectional lens, we at Socratus Collective Wisdom Corporation and Mahila Housing Trust came across some interesting but often-overlooked facts like... 👭🏾 👭🏾 There are now many studies about the association of the increase in one or several gender-based-violence (GBV) forms with instances of extreme weather events - both during and after (For instance, see this paper on association of Ambient Temperature With the Prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence Among Partnered Women in Low- and Middle-Income South Asian Countries - https://lnkd.in/gX8DsBV7 ) 📃 🛑 While the GOI's National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) recognizes that some groups of women are more susceptible to the negative effects of climate change, neither the assessment of the effects of climate change nor its description of mechanisms that support adaptation specifically mentions actions to mitigate this increased gendered risk. ⚖️ 👨🏾‍⚖️ Despite the frequent emphasis on the importance of gender balance, the disproportionate participation of (cisgender) men in climate change governance continues to dominate the field, endangering the inclusion of varied needs and viewpoints and compromising the ability to make informed decisions. 🛣️ 🚦 The women's jury is a small step in a different direction. 9 different experts on themes ranging from physical & mental health, to community and public health, to environmental & planetary health, will make a case for responses and solutions to 15 women from Shanthinagar & Sudamanagar wards in Bangalore. 🦸🏾‍♀️ 🕸️ By putting these women in a decision-making seat at one event - a seemingly small step - we recognise that small steps like these go a long way in flipping some of these underlying power dynamics and creating embodied experiences of new relational dynamics. 📣I am pleased to release the first chapter of my new report: Financing the Transitions the World Needs: Towards a New Paradigm for Carbon Markets. After months of reflection, research, writing and lots of editing, I’m ready to share the first installment of my six-chapter report with my colleagues in the voluntary carbon market. For anyone reading this and thinking, ‘David, what’s this all about?’ let me explain. I have worked in climate change for 30 years and am a great believer in the power of the carbon markets. As my career has taken different twists and turns, my thinking on these has naturally evolved. I was first drawn to carbon markets because I saw a tremendous opportunity to channel a new source of finance towards fighting climate change and, in many cases, promoting sustainable development. Over the years, though, a question planted itself in my brain. Occasionally I would think: “What if we could use the voluntary carbon market for an even greater purpose?” This question never went away. I returned to it, time and again, wondering if there was more we could do with this unique source of funding. This report is a product of that question. At its heart, I recommend we continue to support carbon markets and also use them as a tool for the much needed green transition. In other words, what if we designed and used carbon finance for a more compelling and enduring objective, beyond treating a tonne of carbon as the end in itself? With a little creativity and some hard work I believe we can adjust some of the key pillars of the voluntary carbon market so that it catalyzes the kinds of changes we need to properly fight climate change and secure a liveable, just future. For instance, we need to design carbon markets so they can:. ✅ Fund new technologies and practices;  ✅ Bring down transition costs; ✅ Build necessary capacity; and ✅ De-risk future investments. The first chapter, ‘Designing for a Green Transition’, addresses the current limitations of the voluntary carbon market. How could it be redesigned to serve a transitional role?
