One of the key challenges in the platform engineering space for those starting off, is the lack of clear definition of scope and a well defined framework to get started and add value. The Cost of Customization: A Lesson in Platform Maintenance 🚧💡 Years ago, we were maintaining a platform for a European client that had deployed it across several banks. Their approach to building the platform followed a classic services mindset – with each new version, customers demanded customizations, and our client obliged. When the first version (V1) was rolled out, customers A, B, and C were early adopters. However, A and B requested extensive customizations, and by the time V2 was released, things got even more complicated. Customer A refused to upgrade, Customer B wanted the same customizations in V2, and only Customer C agreed to move forward. As new versions were developed, this cycle repeated itself. By the time they had 50 customers, each with their own specific implementations, the platform became difficult—and expensive—to maintain. Eventually, a leadership change at our client brought a much-needed shift in perspective. The decision was made to abandon building and maintaining a heavily customized platform in favor of deploying a standardized solution based on open-source technology. This experience highlighted an important lesson: while customization can be necessary, over time, it can spiral into a maintenance nightmare if not managed carefully. Standardization and adopting scalable, open-source solutions can often be a better long-term strategy for sustainability and growth 📈. #Leadership #PlatformStrategy #Customization #Standardization #OpenSource

What a fantastic review from the Samaritans, who have been using our products since 2021. A great reflection of our teams' commitment to customers and our product capabilities: Outstanding product and extremely customizable Overall experience has been wonderful. As mentioned, I've never come up with something that I want to have done or a problem I need solved that xAssets can't help with. Support is great, cost to value received is great, and we're very happy with the product and it's capabilities. Pros Whenever I talk to my rep about a new request or "is it possible to" question the answer has always been "sure, we can do that". Always is a strong word and used intentionally because I've yet to throw something at xAssets that it's not able to handle. Parent/child relationships, automated maintenance emails, deploying from stack type records... it's all there. Cons Picking something I don't like about xAssets is difficult but if pushed I would say that the level of potential to do almost anything leads to some very daunting setup procedures. The normal day to day interaction with the tool is simple - the end users will take to it very quickly. However, if you want to set up some new functionality that involves customization then you'll likely need to engage support. The good news is that support is incredible. They're highly responsive, easy to communicated with and understand, and willing to go above and beyond regularly.

Air France customer service is absolutely horrendous. Here my story: I was overcharged for the tickets because of the AF mobile app issues. First I tried to deal with this via the customer service. They suggested to open refund case, which I did, about 6 weeks ago. The case got closed after a few days. I called 3 or 4 times asking to re-open the case. Yet, it remained closed, despite customer success reps promising to re-open, to resolve, to issue the refund. If you cannot resolve something with the team, you do what? Right. You go to the manager. So I went to AF SVP of Customer Success and... I'm still waiting for the answer. Now the most scary and somewhat funny part. I decided to take this issue to X.com. So I went to the official airfrance.com site, scrolled to the bottom of the page and clicked the X icon. That took me to their X page (or so I thought). I posted my issue and got an immediate reply from some individual (maybe???). That someone asked me to DM the case details... 5 minutes later I got a call from the Air France support rep (or so I thought again). He promised me to resolve the case ASAP and issue the refund. After some back-n-forth, he said that refund is approved and I need to install some obscure money transfer app because this is how Air France issues refunds. Remember, I clicked the X icon from the official Air France website so anyone should assume they chat/talk with the legit AF customer success reps. But that was not the case. This individual ended up being a scammer trying to convince me that me sending money to them is how I can get a refund from Air France. I of course ended that call and blocked that X account. Later I decided to contact the customer success via online Messenger. I got a reply from someone (I'm hoping that was human and not AI chatbot) saying they cannot help, only customer success can help. YOU ARE THE CUSTOMER SUCCESS!!! Anyway, this is my journey. Don't know what Air France needs to do, but for sure they should start verifying and updating all communication channels their CUSTOMERS use for getting in touch with them. Then, hopefully, improve the customer support. Wishing you good luck, Air France. Truly and seriously.

Many of Gartner's clients are asking how to reconcile the roles of many platform and DevOps teams -- developer experience (DX)-oriented platform engineering teams, infrastructure platform engineering teams, cloud platform teams, site reliability engineering teams (SRE), etc. We see significant infighting in some organizations, especially since these teams can compete for budget dollars, but we also see questions about what the "hierarchy" of platforms should be and who should get to be in charge / in control.
