Catherine shared her views on the current and future state of #Europe’s energy sector, focusing on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.    #Energy is a cornerstone of the European economy. In recent years, Europe has been shifting its energy strategies to ensure balanced and stable energy prices across the region and make its economy stronger and more resilient.     I strongly advocate for what Catherine refers to as the "electron-molecule alliance." When transposed to the #mobility industry, it becomes evident that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions; rather, success hinges on adapting to the specific context — be it energy availability, infrastructure, or sustainable resources. #Hydrogen exemplifies this adaptability. As a versatile energy carrier, hydrogen can power various forms of transportation, be produced from renewable sources, stored efficiently, and utilized in fuel cells to generate electricity with zero emissions. As Catherine aptly states, it is the synergy of both the electron and the molecule that underpins the reliability, competitiveness, and sovereignty of Europe’s energy system.    However, achieving this transition requires supportive policies and frameworks. The Franco-German duo has always been a driver in EU policies and even if they have different energy policies, these differences can lead to both challenges and opportunities for working together on sustainable energy. But this alone isn’t enough. Achieving success in energy policy requires more than just a strong partnership between #France and #Germany, it requires concerted efforts across #Nations, #industries, and #communities.    Looking ahead, collaboration between the automotive and energy industries is crucial. With electrification, emissions will shift from downstream to upstream in the value chain, where the energy industry operates. The path to #CarbonNeutrality will increasingly depend on addressing these upstream challenges. News to share from France 🇫🇷 in the Renewable Natural Gas #RNGindustry. Veolia, Waga Energy, and #ENGIE have formed a powerful partnership to push the boundaries of sustainable energy production. Since May 1st, Waga Energy has been selling RNG produced at Veolia’s Val Pôle in Claye-Souilly to ENGIE under a #Biomethane Purchase Agreement (BPA), without government subsidies 👏🏼 This 13-year contract is the longest BPA ever signed in France, marking a significant milestone in the RNG market. Veolia supplies biogas from the Claye-Souilly landfill, one of France’s largest RNG production units with an annual capacity of 120 GWh, equivalent to the energy consumption of around 20,000 households. Waga Energy converts this biogas into high-value RNG using its cutting-edge technology. The RNG is marketed by ENGIE at a higher value than the subsidized price, highlighting the growing economic viability of renewable energy sources. This agreement also enabled Waga Energy to secure long-term financing from CIC and Arkéa Banque Entreprises et Institutionnels for the RNG production unit. Miya PAOLUCCI of ENGIE stated, “The signing of this new BPA contributes to ENGIE’s goal to supply 30 TWh of RNG per year to our customers by 2030.” This collaboration not only supports ENGIE’s ambitious goals but also accelerates the transition towards a sustainable energy future. Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia, emphasized, “Veolia is a key player in the production of bioenergy, already producing 1.6 terawatt-hours of biogas from waste anaerobic digestion in France alone.” This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving innovation and sustainability in the energy sector. 🔍 How does the availability of the interconnection with France influence Belgian power prices? 🔍 Last week De Standaard reported that the low availability of the French-Belgian interconnectors was leading to large differences between the French and Belgian power price. My colleague Augustin Levassort analysed what the price impact would be if the availability of the interconnectors were to stay reduced until 2030. In short: Power prices in Belgium increase by up to 6%, whereas the price in France drops by up to 6%. Some in Belgium want to go for 8GW of new/extended nukes... To do what? We have already regularly negative prices and more RES will be connected. Why not going for a real pan-European supply policy (as we are supposed to do...) with more flexibility, more interconnectors, more storage (and not just grid-scale), more community energy (including citizens...), more efficiency, etc. ? 8GW of nukes is 8GW of unsolved waste issues, is very costly and will be a permitting nightmare to say the least. Am not against nukes, but I prefer using the ones developed by our European neighbors (imports do work with our European energy market...) and focus on a more realistic, healthy and less costly approach. Some common sense please...

🔍 How does the recent French interconnection lowered availability influence Belgian power prices? 🔍   Following maintenance issues with high-voltage lines near Lyon, the French TSO RTE has been reducing the availability of interconnectors since mid-March. Currently operating at around 40% capacity, RTE anticipates these constraints lasting until the beginning of May, with potential reoccurrence after the summer holidays.   We modelled what would happen if the French interconnectors to Belgium were to stay at a reduced capacity of 40% until 2030, to assess the risk of this going forward, and here are some key findings: 🇫🇷 In France, we would expect a significant reduction in nuclear and gas generation leading to an average day-ahead price drop of up to 6% on an annual basis. 🇧🇪 Belgium would see the opposite tendency, with increased generation from gas CCGTs and more imports from the Netherlands. As a result, we would anticipate a day-ahead price increase of up to almost 6% on average. After the Princess Elisabeth Zone starts coming online in 2029, Belgium's reliance on imports from France will decrease.   According to Belgium's TSO Elia, there is no impact on the security of supply. However, there is already an effect on prices. Indeed, Belgium has resumed importing a significant amount of nuclear-generated electricity from France since the reduced nuclear unavailability last year. The reduced availability of interconnectors caused a notable drop of prices in France, and a corresponding increase in neighboring countries, Belgium included. Since Belgium will become even more dependent on imports after the full #nuclearphaseout by 2035, the current event raises concerns for its future power system. Last year imports accounted for 3.5% of demand. Our modelling shows it could rise up to 37% by 2040.   The limitation of power trade goes against established European trade principles and interconnection regulations. These rules stipulate that domestic congestion must be addressed through domestic measures, without limiting the cross-border trade. The Belgian energy regulator CREG has asked its French counterparty for further explanation. GreenYellow Secures €13M Financing for #26MW Solar Acquisitions in France French renewable energy company GreenYellow has successfully secured EUR 13 million (USD 14 million) in mezzanine financing to fund the acquisition of 26 MWp in #solarenergy projects across mainland France and select overseas territories. The funding, provided by Zencap Asset Management, the private debt arm of Ofi Invest Group, will support GreenYellow’s commitment to expanding #solarpower capacity in the French market. This financing covers three separate acquisitions of photovoltaic (#PV) portfolios, a process that began at the close of 2023 and continued into early 2024. TotalEnergies, VERBUND AG sign preliminary deal on #Tunisian #hydrogen supply to #Europe Austrian electricity provider VERBUND AG and French energy major TotalEnergies' joint venture with Eren Groupe S.A. TE H2 have signed a preliminary deal with the Republic of Tunisia for a #renewablehydrogen project to supply Europe The multi-billion-dollar project, H2 Notos, aims to produce 200,000 metric tons of hydrogen a year using desalinated water from the Mediterranean and electricity from wind and solar farms in southern Tunisia. A ramp-up to 1 million tons per year is possible. The hydrogen would be transported to Europe through a 3,300 km pipeline connecting #Tunisia to #Italy and continuing onto #Austria and #Germany which is being planned by companies including Snam S.p.A. Production could begin as early as 2030, with #Verbund taking some of the hydrogen and transporting it throughout #CentralEurope What is notable about this project is its ability to transport low-cost hydrogen directly to Europe via pipeline," TEH2 CEO David Corchia said Pipeline transport adds about 1 euro - $1.09/km. to the cost, compared with 3.5 to 4 euros /km when you transform hydrogen to ammonia, ship it on a boat, and re-crack it back into hydrogen." Negative power prices have been a huge topic in European power markets this year, as the number of negative price hours has surged in many markets. Our French power markets team has pulled together a public report on this available on link below. Key drivers of negative prices are: - Strong growth in renewables deployment - High renewables generation in some months (this was a strong driver in I Paris in Spring) - Inflexibilities in the system eg nuclear in France, coal in Poland and Germany - Low power demand, partly linked to weak industrial demand - France in particular ‘imports’ negative prices from neighbouring markets in periods of oversupply.

FRANCE AWARDS FIRST COMMERCIAL FLOATING WIND FARM PROJECT A consortium between Elicio and BayWa r.e. Global has won a tender to build France's first large-scale commercial floating offshore wind farm. The 230-270 MW Pennavel project off the coast of Lorient, Brittany is expected to generate around 30% of the region's current renewable electricity supply, and will power over 450,000 homes annually once operational. Pennavel will be France’s first large-scale commercial floating offshore wind project and is claimed to be the first commercial floating wind farm to be awarded a long-term Contract for Difference (CfD). The project secured a grid connection from French transmission operator RTE. Today, I was at the #ChooseFrance Summit to promote the French electricity grid with three messages: 1️⃣ The energy transition from oil and gas to electricity consumption is a major global challenge => huge investments. But the French electricity grid is already strong, well-meshed, and reliable.  So, despite the necessary investments, the grid development will be more manageable in France than in our neighboring countries, with less works, fewer outages, and fewer risks for system operations. 2️⃣ RTE’s services are recognized for four main reasons ➜ RTE provides one of the European best quality of electricity and security of supply ➜ RTE is committed to meeting connection timeline in a cost-effective manner. ➜ The upfront connection cost is optimized for new consumers ➜ The grid offers discounted rates for heavy consumers and market mechanisms to value industry flexibility. 3️⃣ By the end of the year, we will publish a plan for grid development, called "Roadmap 2040" to increase visibility for suppliers and future customers. ➜ A visibility to be able to implement a strong supply chain in France and Europe ➜ A visibility to ensure future industries that they will be connected on time to a clean and high-quality power grid.
