I cannot stress enough how deep and diverse the sports market is as an asset class - case in point with 2 recent deals in indoor/outdoor venues in France 👇 ⚽🎾 Investments in sports teams and leagues usually get the most media coverage. Two Circles recently highlighted that the professional sports market (i.e., total revenues generated by sports IP owners - teams, leagues, events) was expected to grow from c.$160 billion in 2023 to $260 billion in 2033 (+5% CAGR). Yet there is another sports market beyond professional sports organizations. Many segments and sub-segments are also showing strong growth outlook and value creation potential, including sportswear/equipment, sports marketing and talent representation agencies, sports venues and infrastructure, mass participation events, sportech and sports-focused tech platforms - and I'm forgetting a lot. In France, 2 deals (1 corporate, 1 PE) were closed in less than 6 months with the two market leaders in indoor/outdoor sports venues (football/padel), UrbanSoccer and PLAYERS. ➡️ UrbanSoccer & Compagnie des Alpes (March 2024) In March 2024, the leisure and entertainment group Compagnie des Alpes acquired a majority stake in UrbanSoccer to strengthen their Leisure Parks division with urban sports activities practiced year-round. UrbanSoccer operates 33 5-a-side centers in France for football and/or the fast-growing sport of padel (+1 in Portugal), for a total of 268 playing fields - reaching 3.75 million players a year. FY24 financials: €48 million sales €21.5 million EBITDA (post-IFRS 16 and unaudited - ending June 2024) In the official press release, CDA also noted that the business required a "relatively low level of capital expenditure" (less than 9% of annual sales), enabling them to generate substantial free cash flows from operations. ➡️ PLAYERS x Vendis Capital (July 2024) Vendis Capital announced today their acquisition of a majority stake in PLAYERS alongside its founders Tony Jalinier, Guillaume DEBELMAS, and Joseph Viéville, as well as the management team. Stadium potential has yet to be unlocked in European football. 🏟️ That's why, according to an insightful analysis from the Financial Times (link below 👇), several stadium expansion plans announced by Premier League clubs could lead to an increase "𝒃𝒚 𝒂𝒕 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒕 115,000 𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒆, 𝒐𝒓 14%, 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆." Deloitte's Annual Review of Football Finance 2024 published in June 2024 indicated that the "big 5" European leagues saw aggregate matchday revenue increase to €2.8 billion. That's an average 14% share of clubs’ total revenue for the 2022/23 season. The English Premier League generated: ➡️ €3,717 million in broadcast revenue ➡️ €2,254 million in commercial revenue ➡️ €997 million in matchday revenue The Premier League's matchday revenue compared to: 🇪🇸 €539 million in LALIGA 🇩🇪 €536 million in the Bundesliga 🇩🇪 €434 million in Lega Serie A 🇫🇷 €256 million in Ligue 1 Premier League clubs showed a record average league attendance of 𝟒𝟎,𝟐𝟗𝟏. And yet, as Kieran Maguire summarized it perfectly in the Financial Times article, increasing matchday revenues is still seen as “𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑦 𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠” for clubs "at a time when domestic broadcast revenue growth has slowed down". Another great quote from the FT article by Christopher Lee, Managing Director at Populous (which designed the new Tottenham Hotspur Football Club stadium): “𝐵𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑑𝑐𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑛𝑒𝑔𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑. Man U - led by new owner Jim Ratcliffe - are expected to make a final decision over whether to pursue a £2 billion plan for a new 100,000-seat stadium by the end of 2024. Everton Football Club already has a brand new stadium under construction on Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool. Let's now hope that increasing stadium capacity will help keep ticket prices accessible to all fans.

CVC receives 10% share of LaLiga's TV revenues for 50yrs. CVC gains around €90m per year. This deal stands to return CVC $4.5bn * 2022 agreed to invest €1.5bn (for 13%) in the French Professional Football League's new commercial subsidiary ‘Commercial GIE’ which handles media rights & other commercial activities. * 2021 paid $745m for IPL cricket franchise Gujarat Titans, now worth $1-1.5bn.
