Congratulations to UNISTELLAR and SETI Institute citizen astronomers for the confirmation of a warm Jupiter exoplanet! 🪐 In this study, soon to be published in the Astronomical Journal, observers with our Exoplanet Transits program teamed up with NASA Exoplanets Exoplanet Watch to capture the passing of this planet in front of its star and confirm its existence. This gas giant had previously only been a "planet candidate" seen by NASA's TESS mission, but thanks to citizen scientists, it is now an official planet. Thank you Astronomy magazine for this fantastic article! https://buff.ly/3XwOtgf "While the method relies on pure chance, TESS observes so many stars all across the sky that it has so far amassed over 7,000 candidate worlds. But because TESS is so busy trying to detect as many planets as possible, almost all of these detections rely on a single transit event: just one pass of the exoplanet in front of its star. The task of confirming the existence of the exoplanet is left to follow-up surveys with ground-based observatories, which is a tedious, difficult, and time-consuming job. This is where citizen scientists come to the rescue. Using a network of telescopes scattered across the globe, amateur astronomers can perform the necessary observations needed to turn a candidate exoplanet into a confirmed one. Recently, the Unistellar Network and Exoplanet Watch has confirmed a new exoplanet, TIC 393818343 b, which sits about 300 light-years away from Earth."

We were in the Maldives and our telescopes are going to be there for a new Astro-tourism program with Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) and the SETI Institute . More soon!
Last month the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) had the absolute pleasure of successfully organising the Space for Island Nations Conference (SINC) for the second year running! 🏝 #SINC emphasised how #SIDS should be perceived not just as beneficiaries of space technology, but also as important and proactive contributors to our species’ shared knowledge about our own planet and beyond. In this spirit, the conference kicked off with two major announcements: - A collaboration between #MSRO, the The Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) and their partners at Blue Origin will provide an opportunity for a Maldivian or a #SIDS representative to go to space, - The ‘Corals in Space’ mission, a basic research science partnership between #MSRO, Jaguar Space, and The Karman Project to observe coral behaviour in microgravity. #MSRO celebrated some notable milestones in our journey. We announced our membership with The International Astronomical Union, and formalised a partnership with the Axelspace Corporation, a Japanese satellite manufacturer and service provider, and Sony, to unlock the benefits of synergising regular, high resolution satellite images with #IoT sensor technology. #MSRO also hosted two closed-door sessions under Chatham House Rules: - Co-organised with our partners at UNIDIR — UN Institute for Disarmament Research and Secure World Foundation a workshop on ‘Space Security and Sustainability Why Is It Essential for Small Island Nations?’ - In coordination with the Pacific Disaster Center - PDC Global and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), #MSRO organised a roundtable on ‘Innovative Approaches to Disaster Risk Reduction for Small Island Nations’ This year, #MSRO partnered with the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) to bring the Asia-Pacific Space Generation Workshop for the first time to the Maldives. Our youth delegates also participated in daily evening astronomy experiences run by Dr Franck Marchis, Senior Astronomer and Director of UNISTELLAR Citizen Science at the SETI Institute. Thanks to Dr Marchis and the support of our partners at UNISTELLAR and TRL Space, #MSRO announced the acquisition of the first of several telescopes to develop an #astronomy programme in the Maldives so that young Maldivians can find new ways to connect with the stars and contribute to global #citizenscience. #SINC2024 convened over 200 delegates and speakers from across the world and would not have been possible without its sponsors and supporters. We extend a heartfelt thank you to the Secure World Foundation, UNIDIR — UN Institute for Disarmament Research, The Space Exploration and Research Agency , Breakthrough Initiatives, Axelspace Corporation, KSAT – Kongsberg Satellite Services, Orbit Fab, Trans Maldivian Airways Pvt. Ltd., and Six Senses Laamu Maldives. We are also grateful to our fantastic hosts at Crossroads Maldives and our fabulous media partners at SpaceWatch.Global! https://www.sinc2024.com/

"The Odyssey Pro makes it easy to start viewing the cosmos, meaning you'll use this telescope night after night, as opposed to alternative options that sit in a closet untouched for years." Thanks AppleInsider for the 4.5/5 star review on the ODYSSEY PRO! And for talking to our Chief Science Officer Franck Marchis about it's versatility as not only "...an excellent platform for amateur astronomy, but [it's] also a robust scientific platform." Unistellar's Chief Science Officer Franck Marchis visited the Maldives last week to attend the 2024 Space for Island Nations Conference! He shared not only Unistellar and SETI Institute #citizenscience, but views through the EVSCOPE2 as well, which brought the beautiful Maldivian skies to life for locals and attendees on the island of Kudafari. The SETI Institute and the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) will now collaborate on building a citizen science network in the Maldives using #Unistellar telescopes, helping more to observe our cosmos in meaningful ways ✨ Thanks #SINC2024!

We are so proud of our community for making science like this possible. Due to their efforts and the work of #SETI researcher Dr. Daniel Peluso, the #Unistellar network played a part in confirming the existence of an #exoplanet. A huge congratulations to all our citizen scientists involved, especially the Galaxy Explorers who are now co-authors on a scientific publication before even graduating high school! #citizenscience #astronomy See the SETI Institute press release here: https://buff.ly/3TtEzZ2 "High School Students Contribute to Exoplanet Discovery"
